Tests start on modified VVER-440 fuel for Dukovany Russia s OKB Gidropress has begun tests of a mock-up of third-generation nuclear fuel for VVER-440 reactors at the Dukovany nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. The aim of the tests is to study the mechanical stability of fuel components under thermal-hydraulic and dynamic conditions, which are close as possible to full-scale operation. IAEA works to bolster preparedness for pandemics An initiative to strengthen global preparedness for future pandemics like COVID-19 has been launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The project, called ZODIAC, builds on the IAEA s experience in assisting countries in the use of nuclear and nuclear-derived techniques for the rapid detection of pathogens that cause transboundary animal diseases, including ones that spread to humans. South Africa starts consultations on nuclear new build South Africa s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has issued a Request for Information to enable it to assess nuclear technologies that could be considered for a national programme to build 2500 MWe of new nuclear capacity. The programme could include conventional pressurised water reactors, small modular reactors or a blend of technologies. Holtec deploys robotic welder Holtec International has deployed the first industrial robot developed under a programme it launched in 2019: a portable robotic welder, which is used to weld lids to multi-purpose canisters. Using a robot drastically reduces the dose to the loading crew during such operations. Russia starts installation work at fuel fabrication facility Work has started on installation of the main equipment for the nuclear fuel fabrication facility at the pilot energy complex in Seversk (Tomsk). Under construction at the Siberian Chemical Combine, ODEK is part of Russia s Proryv (Breakthrough) project, which is designed to demonstrate a closed fuel cycle. SCC is part of fuel company TVEL, which is a subsidiary of state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
