What to Do This Weekend
Weekend plans look a lot different nowadays, eh? Iâm sure you are as sick of reading stories that begin with, In these unprecedented times or Our new reality. So Iâm going to skip the intro and the explanation You are being a hero by staying home and protecting the health of your family and that of your neighbors. Thank you! Let me reward that good behavior with a list of a few things to keep you entertained this weekend.
Absurd PlanetItâs a ridiculous tongue in cheek nature show on Netflix. There are plenty of adult jokes disguised as nature facts. Itâs child safe and adult approved. The whole family enjoyed it! If you are looking for a program the whole family can enjoy, add Absurd Planet to your watch list.
Watch PartySpeaking of Netflix, did you know you can watch a movie with friends long distance? Check out Netflix Party. It synchronizes everyoneâs video playback and adds a chat feature. If you and your significant other arenât quarantining together, this is certainly a fun date night option, too!
Date Night Dinner DessertIf you are homebound with your significant other, youâre probably ready to spice things up.  Tasty did a great feature of creating a three-course meal from the pantry. I was impressedâ¦.especially when one of the courses was peanut butter cookies! Follow along and cook a great meal or just get inspired to create your own pantry date night!
StretchWe are sitting still so much more than usual. You need to give your joints and bones and muscles some love! Stretch them out! There are plenty of free stretching videos on YouTube and the like, but my number one recommendation is the Peloton App. They are offering a 90-day free trial right now, after that itâs $13/month. The full body stretches are 5-15 minutes long giving you plenty of options. Additionally, they have meditation, boot camp, running, and walking programs. (and no, Iâm not an affiliateI just think itâs a great app)
Try A New Summer RecipeYeah, cooking isnât a groundbreaking suggestion. Approach it a little differently today. Think of it as a meditation. Take your time cleaning and cutting the fresh veggies or fruit. Maybe watch a Youtube video first and learn a new technique. Then when you are ready, take on one of these yummy summer recipes.
DanceÂLast week I took a dance lesson to learn the moves to the Tik Tok âSavageâ dance. The instructor was amazingI was a *mess*! But I havenât laughed that hard in a whileand it used up a lot of energy! You can find plenty of lessons on YouTube or you can try a virtual class with Diva Dance DC. You can literally dance like nobody is watching! And who knowsmaybe you will find some hidden talent!
Phone a Friendâ¦.not for your sake, but for theirs. People are getting cabin fever. They need each other. Scroll through your phone and find the friend that you know lives alone or the friend you know wishes they were living alone, and give them shout. It doesnât have to be a Zoom happy hour and it doesnât have to be an hour long. You can simply share a happy memory you have with them. Small interactions and gestures go a long way right now. Â

It is often hard to stay inspired during this difficult time. Things can look bleak whether youre reading the news or braving the world outside of your home. San Francisco has lost its charm during the pandemic. Streets are deserted. Businesses are boarded up and graffitied. All the cultural vitality that draws one to a city like this is canceled. If if we wanted to go somewhere.theres no nowhere to go.
And so we turn inward. Back towards home. If youve been looking to scratch a creative itch, this post is for you.
As this pandemic has continued, Ive been sharing #StayHomeInspo on Instagram a respite for the eyes and inspiration for design ideas and creative projects we can do in our own homes to boost our spirits. One of my primary resources of inspiration has been stylist and photographer Colin King. I discovered Colins work on Instagram and have been following his creative journey every since as he styles editorials ranging from corporate clients like Zara Home, to homes that grace the cover of Architectural Digest. As part of his own #StayHomeInspo journey, Colin started his own hashtag #StayHomeStillLife chronicling his Covid creative outlet creating stunning still life vignettes in his Manhattan apartment during New York Citys lockdown. I looked forward to a new image from Colin every day and even though hes back to work outside his home, I still do.
Colin was gracious enough to share some of his creative tips and tricks with Apt34 today. I hope you find his insights as inspiring as I do.
Q: How did you get started, especially doing still life work? Did you have a mentor? Study something? Or just start experimenting?
A: Iâm really good at doing, and not so good at being. Out of all of the careers Iâve had, none of them afforded me the flexibility to work from home. So in an attempt to cope and self soothe, I quickly found comfort in creating still lifes at home. My apartment is small, and there are only so many combinations when it comes to rearranging furniture, so I was forced to think small. It started organically shopping at my favorite decor shop (and the only one that was open) nature. Foraging quickly led me to taking unrelated, inanimate objects, fruit, and anything else I could find around the house; placing all of that on a clean surface and trying to find an arrangement that felt poetic. The act of creating these still lifes gave me a schedule and presented a challenging, healthy way for me to step away from my screen, disconnect from fear and worry, and just be.
Q: What would you say are the key components of a captivating still life?
A: For me there are three key components of a captivating still life.
Each still life I create, my goal is to conjure the feeling of being a tourist in someone elseâs reality. I never want any of my photos to feel as though youâre on a set or that the elements were contrived specifically for the photo. For example, when I am at a museum or even in someoneâs home for an editorial shoot, I am always noting the forgotten corners, the stanchions, the coat rack, the half-drawn closet curtain; these are the places where there was no thought or extra care given to the placement of things itâs just where everything naturally fell. Every captivating image Iâve seen has this almost eerie element of a human having just been there moving about unapologetically, and whatâs left is unstyled but perfectly settled. Ultimately, creating a moment that seems more unearthed than contrived.
When approaching my still life I let go of the practical, intended use of each object. To me, a vase isnât a vase and a fork isnât a fork theyâre just things with their own materiality and form. I love it when I see an image and donât even realize what the objects are until examining closer. Whether itâs upside down, balancing on its side, or completely submerged in a glass of water, there is an irreverence with a nod to surrealism that I love.
Lastly, light. Finding the depth between and beyond the surface the objects are on and how they relate to each other is key. Not only do I want to feel the dimensionality of the image, I also want to use objects that absorb light, reflect light, and bend light arranging them in a poetic display to generate an unexpected conversation.
Q: Are there any tricks of the trade you regularly rely on (tools, adhesives etc)?
A: No tricks. Just patience and a good playlist. Iâve never used a tool or an adhesive, I recognize I have so much to learn but right now I am having fun shattering glasses, chipping ceramics, cursing under my breath, and the freedom that comes with not being bound by any way of doing it. And music has always been a part of my process. As a trained dancer, music brings me a sense of comfort, routine and ritual while keeping me in the present moment.
Q: Your photography is also amazing. The way you use light is incredible. Are you self taught? Do you only use your phone and if so what do you use to edit your photos?
A: Aw, thank you. I am completely self-taught and I only use my iPhone. I just looked and I have 143,885 images on my phone. For each still life I create, or any image really, I take anywhere from 20-40 images per set up. Itâs practice. itâs repetition, itâs trial and error. Itâs like going to the gym and working out. Taking photos is a muscle Iâve been working on since I first got a camera phone in college. I use VSCO and Snapseed to manipulate shadows, contrast, and perspective. Weâre all learning from each other. I look to photographers and other creatives I admire and dissect their images, find what I like about them, and then tinker with my own.
I had to let go of the concept that there was the perfect preset or formula for any of my work. No one was going to share a map or rulebook with me, and through a lot of trial and error, I learned that I canât think my way into being a good photographer or stylist its in the action. I have to use my hands to pick up something tactile a book to sift through or a couple of objects to arrange. From there I just play, sometimes itâs there and sometimes, I walk away. I get myself into trouble when I wait for inspiration to hit, I have to get up and find it.
Q:You have a very distinct look. I can recognize your work a mile away. How did you go about cultivating that?
A: Intuition has always been my leader in life. I didnât know I was cultivating a look I just kept taking photos of what I liked and using the limited resources I had. Although the aesthetic strands running through my work are pretty consistent, the influences feeding into the design process are typically eclectic and even the most unlikely of subjects can provide food for thought. Simplicity and finding beauty in the mundane interested me. At first, my minimal sensibility came from not having a large portfolio or a lot of pieces to work with. And ultimately, Iâve always admired the edited life less color, less clutter, and fewer things sustained by purposeful restraint.
Q: Where do you turn for creative inspiration?
A: I draw my inspiration from other people. Iâve learned to surround myself with people who have something that I want; and challenge me to be more honest, take more risks, and ultimately how to not fear failure. I am energized and encouraged by other peopleâs victories; the immense joy I get from watching peers succeed gives me hope that I too, can achieve anything I put my mind to.
I am also very inspired by nature I am in constant awe of what it produces. Nature has a way of humbling me and is a great reminder to abandon the idea of perfect nothing about nature is linear or symmetrical and nothing is immune to decay.
Q: What about your work brings you joy?
A: I get to tell stories for a living and thatâs all Iâve ever wanted to do. I get to connect with people and help create a context for the intimate rituals of peoplesâ lives. And I also get to surrender to the subjectivity of what I do and knowing that the narrative Iâve created will be interpreted differently by each viewer it challenges me to be vulnerable in a way itâs all part of being a creative and I feel grateful to be able to make a living by being creative.
Also, objects that have been given to me or are inherited from a shoot or trip, bring me joy. The handmade pieces in my place, knowing the story and process of the artist brings me joy as well. Ultimately, the smallest object can embody an entire relationship or single experience; theyâre tied integrally to memories and can shape the identity of the room.
Q: Your career has been taking off of late. Where do you hope to be in five years?
A: This time has presented irrefutable evidence that I donât have the power to know where I will be in 5 years. Doing the best at this moment puts me in the best place for the next moment. The saying Time takes time has always been a hard pill for me to swallow, I spent so much of my life wanting to be the fastest, youngest, and the best at everything I did but these unrealistic expectations only brought me pain. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Surrendering to the idea that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, going through exactly what I need to be going through, AND being content with that is where I hope to be in 5 years. I am learning that the most important relationship I have is with myself. When that relationship is strong I am a better son, brother, friend, employee and partner.

Even Americans who havenât visited know that New York City never sleeps. Endless streams of people on the street and taxi cabs clogging the roadways are just part of the ceaseless movement in the city. With a population nearing nine million people, New York City always has something going on within its five boroughs.
With all the commotion, itâs safe to say that New York City could be one of the loudest cities on earth. However, it seems that New Yorkers are getting tired of the noise more than usual this year. From COVID-19 lockdowns to widespread protests, New York City has become quite chaotic lately â is this the cause of the increase in noise complaints?
MethodologyWe analyzed data from NYC OpenData, which includes a database of 311 calls placed within the city. We looked at noise complaint calls placed from February 1, 2020, to June 30, 2020, and from February 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019.
We also used available population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau to weigh noise complaint call data in relation to the population of each New York borough: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
Noise complaints rise 106% in one yearItâs no secret that New York City is a noisy place ââ the bustling streets and never-ending traffic jams create quite the cacophony of sound. However, it seems like residents are complaining about noise more than ever, especially since last year. Total complaints more than doubled from this time last year, increasing by 106 percent.Â
Hereâs a breakdown of the data between 2019 and 2020:Â
Noise complaints increased by over 106 percent from 2019 to 2020 (within the measured time period). The city also saw a 97 percent increase in complaints from the beginning of April to the end of May 2020, marking the largest jump in noise complaints so far this year. These increases paint a striking picture of the considerable changes in city life over the last several months.
COVID-19, lockdowns and protests in NYCThe beginning of March marked the start of quarantines, lockdowns and panic over the COVID-19 pandemic. With such a huge population density (27,000 people per square mile), New York City quickly fell into chaos as the virus spread through the city ââ as of June 30, there were over 212,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New York City alone.
Quarantines and lockdowns within the city meant millions of people began working from home. With so many now at home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., itâs no surprise that New Yorkers had more to complain about when it comes to noisy neighbors and the sounds of city traffic. The data reflects this timeline perfectly, showing a difference of nearly 10,000 additional complaints logged in March (compared to February).
The end of May 2020 came with a new noise in New York City: protests. This unrest was widespread across New York City, with protests in all five boroughs. The sheer volume of these protests can be seen clearly in the data we analyzed. From the beginning of May to the end of June, noise complaints increased by 79 percent. Additionally, complaints of âloud talkingâ more than doubled from the beginning of April to the end of May, about the time when the protests began.
Battle of the boroughs: Who complains the most in NYC?Despite having a smaller population than other boroughs, The Bronx has logged the most noise complaints in 2020 so far ââ a total of 81,869 complaints logged from February to June.
Because populations differ across the five boroughs, we divided each boroughâs total complaints by its respective total population to find comparable percentages.
Borough-specific data is below:
The Bronx: 81,869 total complaints (6 percent of the population)Manhattan: 74,661 total complaints (5 percent of the population)Brooklyn: 73,899 total complaints (3 percent of the population)Queens: 49,469 total complaints (2 percent of the population)Staten Island: 6,635 total complaints (1 percent of the population)A borough rich in local culture, The Bronx has been called the birthplace of hip-hop and salsa, is home to Yankee Stadium and boasts one of the most diverse populations in the city. This diversity could be related to a higher volume of noise complaints, especially since a 2017 study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives Journal determined that neighborhoods with higher poverty rates and larger minority populations experience more noise pollution than other neighborhoods.
New York City explodes with fireworksFrom the beginning of April to the end of June this year, complaints about illegal fireworks increased by a staggering 283,595 percent ââ only 19 complaints were logged in April, while complaints in June totaled 53,902. Brooklyn is seeing the majority of complaints about fireworks, with approximately one in three complaints originating from the largest of the boroughs.
Fireworks are the second most complained-about noise in New York City from February to June, with loud music and parties taking the first place prize for the most complained-about noise (157,823 total complaints during this time period). With this in mind, itâs important to note that 311 OpenData categorizes these complaints in their own section, rather than grouping them with other noise complaints.

The unusual volume of fireworks has raised many conspiracy theories among New Yorkers, with some claiming the government is using the fireworks to desensitize the public to âwar-like sounds.â Others claim the police are using the fireworks as a punishment for the recent protests, while some say New Yorkers are simply bored in quarantine.
Whatever the cause of the fireworks, they are wreaking havoc across the city. Countless residents have been hospitalized with firework-related injuries and the city government has created a police taskforce to curb illegal firework activity, with police donning riot gear and arresting anyone believed to be involved.

While many apartments come with built-in air conditioning (AC) units, many do not. So what are your options for cooling down your space? How do air conditioners work to keep your apartment cool?Air conditioners have been around for a very long time, in fact, the first air conditioning system was developed in 1902.The basics of how air conditioners work are similar to how a fridge works. Air conditioners use an internal refrigerating system to take in hot air and cool it. The hot air, absorbed by the AC unit through various coils and systems, turns into a gas. From there, the unit converts it back into a liquid.
Next, the hot air pushes out the back through vents or a window and the cool air pushes into your apartment. The website HowStuffWorks.com puts it very simply: Think of it as an endless, elegant cycle: liquid refrigerant, phase conversion to a gas/heat absorption, compression and phase transition back to a liquid again.
Important things to understand when selecting your AC unitThere are a couple of other things to consider when picking which type of AC unit to use for your apartment. Youll want to consider things such as cooling capacity, BTUs, energy efficiency and costs.
BTUsBTU or British thermal units is the amount of energy it takes to heat or cool one pound of water. For air conditioners specifically, the BTU refers to the amount of heat your unit can remove in an hour. Some units take more than others. For instance, a window unit takes anywhere from 3,000 to 25,000 BTUs, whereas a portable system can use anywhere from 8,000 to 12,000 BTUs. Make sure to take the time to research this before deciding on which unit is best for you. Cooling capacityWhen picking out your AC unit keep in mind its cooling capacity. The size of the area you want to cool will greatly impact your choice. Different units cool different area sizes. Take portable units for example â these are usually only able to cool the area they sit in. Window units on the other hand are a better option if you are looking to cool down an entire apartment.
Energy costsThe cost that it takes to run an AC unit is something else to consider. The price can greatly change depending on how big your unit is and how big of an area youre trying to cool. On average it can cost anywhere from $14.40 per month to $211.20 to run different types of AC units.

1. Portable air conditionerPortable units are one option when looking for an AC unit. They come in various sizes and work in many different rooms. Often referred to as âportable swamp coolers or âevaporated cooling these two systems work similarly to other AC units but primarily rely on water. Another difference is their setup. For instance, some require their own voltage plug and most require you the ability to vent the hot air out of a window.

The survival skills cockroaches have are amazing. They can continue living, for a short time, without their heads. They can hold their breath underwater for 40 minutes. They can run up to three miles in a single hour.
This is all great for roaches (and pretty interesting too) â until the ugly bugs infest your apartment. Once theyve made their way into your home, all you want to do is get rid of them. But, before you make an appointment with an exterminator, consider an organic, DIY approach. Use one of the many natural remedies for roaches to keep them away.
How to get rid of cockroachesOnce youve established youve got unwanted visitors, whether youve seen roaches or just their nasty trails, its time to consider how you want to get rid of them. You can use chemicals to do the job, but if you have pets or young children or youre sensitive to certain products, going natural might be a better option.
When its time to get rid of unwanted insect visitors, look to your pantry first, you might already have some of these natural remedies for roaches ready to go.
1. SugarThis is an example of using something sweet to lure cockroaches to their demise. You just have to add a little something extra. Mix one part powdered sugar with three parts boric acid. The sugar brings the bugs in â the boric acid takes them out.
Boric acid isnt toxic to people or pets, but it can irritate skin. When putting this mixture down, avoid counters and stick to the hidden spots roaches can use for hiding places. Good spots are behind appliances, under the sink and in any cracks along the edges of cabinets.
If either ingredient isnt readily available, this is a versatile recipe, so you can swap out ingredients to achieve the same effect. Instead of powdered sugar, you can use peanut butter or jelly. You can also replace the boric acid with food-grade diatomaceous earth.
2. Soapy waterIf you spot a cockroach and want to kill it without having to get close enough to step on it, keep a spray bottle of soapy water handy. Use diluted dish soap so that whatever surface it gets on also gets clean (an added bonus).
Spraying this mixture directly onto a roach makes it impossible for the bug to breathe. It clogs up their skin, which is how they take in air. It may take an extra little bit to do the trick, and you still have to dispose of the roach but hey â it wont head back to hang with its buddies.
3. Coffee groundsThis easy-to-find food staple helps make a perfect cockroach trap. They serve as bait to bring the roaches in and are non-toxic for every other member of your home. To make a trap, all you need is a glass jar, coffee grounds and water.
To build your trap:
Fill a large glass jar about halfway with water.Add 1-2 tablespoons of moistened coffee grounds.Place the jars as close to potential nesting spots as possible.The roaches will come in to check out the coffee, climb into the jar and get stuck and eventually drown. Then, dump the entire contents of the trap into the toilet for a goodbye flush.
4. LemonWhile lemon wont work on its own to keep roaches away, using lemon-scented cleaners around your home can have a big impact on keeping the place cockroach-free.
A clean home is the best way to avoid an infestation, and the scent of a lemon actually works to keep a variety of insects from wanting to live in your place.
For an easy, all-purpose cleaner you can make at home, you only need two ingredients â citrus peels and vinegar. To make:
Fill a glass jar with clean, chopped-up lemon peels.Pour white vinegar over the peels to submerge them and seal the jar.Let the mixture sit for about four weeks, shaking it regularly.Strain out the peels and put the liquid into a spray bottle.This will keep countertops, appliances, floors and glass all clean and smelling great, while also helping you deal with the cockroaches.
Make sure to clean your place regularly, focusing on areas like the kitchen and dining room. Roaches love crumbs and can smell food if packages get left open in your pantry. Its also a good idea to empty your trash regularly to keep food odors out of your home.
5. PlantsAnother big attractor for roaches is moisture. One way to deal with excess moisture in your home is to check your pipes regularly for leaks, but sometimes its a matter of high humidity. To deal with this, consider buying a few house plants.
Youll need a specific type, epiphytes like ferns, orchids and cacti. These are special plants that work as a natural dehumidifier, pulling water from the air to keep themselves hydrated. Theyre easy to care for and will help reduce moisture levels in your home.
Place one in every bathroom, on a screened-in porch, or anywhere where the air feels heavy. They wont repel cockroaches themselves but will help take away a serious temptation for the bugs to come into your home.
6. OnionsThis is maybe the strangest of the natural remedies for roaches, but it uses ingredients youre bound to have at home right now. All you need is an onion and baking soda. Again, the food attracts hungry insects, and the baking soda does the dirty work.
To set this up:
Dice up about half an onion.Sprinkle baking soda over it.Place on a small paper plate anywhere roaches may hide overnight.Since roaches prefer the dark, youll most likely âfeed more if you wait until evening to put out your trap. Its also best to do it when theres minimal risk of running into the nasty guys yourself.
7. CornstarchWhen you need to cover up cracks to keep the roaches away, this remedy is a great choice. Not only will it fill the space to let fewer roaches through, but it will also kill any of them who eat it.
Mix equal parts of cornstarch and Plaster of Paris to make a powder you can sprinkle anywhere. Dont activate the Plaster of Paris with water beforehand. The roaches do that after they eat the concoction when they drink water. Its the mixing in their stomach that ultimately kills them.
Its important to note that Plaster of Paris is a toxic ingredient and dangerous for children and pets. Using this recipe specifically in cracks helps keep it away from everyone but the roaches.
8. PeppermintRoaches hate the smell of peppermint. Theyll avoid it like the plague. It can also actually harm them if they come into contact with it. Spraying a mixture with peppermint oil directly onto roaches can mean lights out, but thats only if you see the invaders around.
Youll have more success using mint as a repellent, targeting areas near where you think roaches are hiding. To make a mint-infused spray:
Mix two parts water with one part white vinegar into a spray bottle.Add about 10 drops of peppermint oil.Shake up and spray.Chemicals arent required to keep the roaches awayThe question is never if youll see a roach in your apartment, but rather when. Theyre out there, and theres a lot of them, but knowing how to repel them and say good-bye for good means you dont have to live with them. Us
