In April, a book entitled A Road Map for Respect, Kindness, Gratitude, Grit, Courage and Resilience was published. This book is the outcome of a collaborative writing process within the Montville Township Schools and features the work of more than 125 student authors. As part of the district s Character Education and Mindfulness Initiatives, students and the superintendent of schools share their perspectives ona variety of topics which reinforce the importance of respect, kindness, gratitude, grit, courage and resilience in our daily lives. Students from the elementary through high school levels contributed their wisdom and thoughts on these important topics.The book is available through Amazon for $5.00. Proceeds go to the Montville Township Public Schools. One School One Book is the Summer Reading approach at both Lazar and MTHS.All middle school and high school students are encouraged to be prepared to discuss the Summer Reading book on the first day of school in fall 2020. As per information released by the NJSIAA that permits summer workouts for student athletes to begin on or around July 13th, the MTHS fields and facilities, including the track and tennis courts, will reopen to the public on July 10, 2020. We ask that those using the facilities observe the proper protocols (such as separate, marked tennis balls for each player) and the maintenance of safe social distancing. On Friday, June 12, 2020, NJ Governor Phil Murphy announced that in-person Extended School Year programs could resume as of July 6, 2020, provided that students educational needs were met in a safe environment. . The options presented by Governor Murphy for school districts to choose were virtual programs, in-person summer programs or a combination of both. After much thought and discussion Montville Township Public Schools has decided to continue to deliver all instruction and related services virtually. Character.org will honor these schools at the 2021 National Forum to be held in March 2021 in Washington, DC. Character.org, is a national advocate and leader for character development in schools and communities. Hilldale and Valley View were 2 of only 84 schools and 7 districts in 15 states that were certified as National Schools of Character. Hilldale and Valley View are also two of seven schools in the Montville Township Public Schools district. The two Elementary schools join Cedar Hill Elementary, William Mason Elementary, Woodmont Elementary and Robert R. Lazar Middle School as National Schools of Character. Montville Township Public Schools district was also named a District of Character in 2018.
