Common symptoms include: palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath and fatigue. Effective treatments are available for nearly all arrhythmias and at the London Arrhythmia Centre, we have one of the largest groups of arrhythmia specialists in Europe. They specialise in the treatment of complex arrhythmias and those seen in adults with congenital heart disease providing clinical excellence and the highest standards of care. Our team of experienced consultant electrophysiologists have access to the most advanced technology for treating of arrhythmiasincluding a new hybrid theatre with the latest in high quality imaging (pictured). We provide every aspect of arrhythmia care: from routine teststo rapid access to outpatient assessment and diagnostics;the latestcatheter ablationtechniquesincluding radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation; cardiac resynchronisation therapy for patients with heart failure; implantation of pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators, and surgical intervention. The London Arrhythmia Centre is home to world-leaders in the field of abnormal heart rhythm. Consultant electrophysiologists are cardiologists who specialise in arrhythmias. Our consultants have extensive experience and hold academic and clinical lead positions in some of the UK s prestigious universities and teaching hospitals. Crucially these consultants are performing significant numbers of procedures including radiofrequency and cryoablation. Our multidisciplinary team includes: consultant cardiologists, radiologists, pathologists and clinical nurse specialists. Most procedures will be performed in the catheterisation lab however if the need arises the cardiothoracic theatre and fully-equipped cardiothoracic level 3 intensive care unit are adjacent and on the third floor of the main hospital. Investigations todiagnose arrhythmia usually include an ECG, a chest X-ray and an ultrasound scan (echocardiogram). More detailed investigations including an angiogram to look at the blood supply of the heart may be carried out. Routine blood tests are taken, including a test for thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can precipitate arrhythmia.Other investigations might include 24 hour ECG and 24 hour BP, or for patients presenting with infrequent but severe symptoms, an implantable loop recorder. Our consultants and physiologists use the most advanced equipment to help diagnose and treat all arrhythmia conditions. Often within the same initial visit to their cardiologist, a patient can have most additional investigations in our cardiology department outpatients on the sixth floor of St Olaf House. Also located here are: our Pacemaker and Defibrillator Centre run by Ian Kirkpatrick; and our electrophysiology service headed up by Jarrad Shaw who specialises in electrophysiology. Here patients can have their annual check-ups and follow-up treatments for implantable loop recorders, pacemakers, defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices. Arrhythmia Clinical Nurse Specialist Patients undergoing procedures such as ablation, cardioversion or device implantation are supported by our Arrhythmia Clinical Nurse Specialist, Claire Chitty. She provides a unique service in the private sector. Patients may be newly diagnosed with an arrhythmia, heart failure or an inherited cardiac condition – all commonly associated with worry, stress and anxiety – so it is widely recognised at policy level that this particular patient group needs additional support. I provide outpatient support for arrhythmia patients and consultants. Patients can see their consultant and see me afterwards to further discuss their treatment. Pre-assessment can be carried out at this stage, or just additional support and information to help patients make decisions about treatment. This gives me the opportunity to ensure they understood all aspects of their procedure and care. Our dedication to our patients and the great satisfaction we take from the improvements we can make in people s lives Flexible appointment times / same day appointments (8am-6pm, Monday to Friday) Access to a specialised pacing physiologist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Access to world renowned Consultant Cardiologists who specialise in arrhythmias Home monitors that can download information from your device from home You are guaranteed to be seen by an IBHRE qualified physiologist Access to other areas of our Cardio-Respiratory Department (e.g. treadmill to assess heart rate response to exercise) Need to know An ECG records the rate, rhythm and electrical activity of your heart. It can be used to diagnose conditions such as an abnormal heart beat (arrhythmia) or to determine the effectiveness of medication. It can also be part of a routine medical check up to make sure your heart is functioning normally.
