At the age of 18 he joined the Royal Air Force. He looked so young that he decided to grow a moustache in an attempt to look his age. His first year in the RAF consisted of square- bashing and training, first in Newcastle, then London and lastly in Yorkshire. Then World War Two broke out and he was involved with Bomber Command followed by service in the India/Burma Campaign. Towards the end of the war he met Elsie at RAF Silloth. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and they married in 1946. Following 12 years of service in the RAF, John went to work for Atomic Energy who were at the forefront of innovation at that time, converting atomic power into energy. John has had an amateur radio licence since 1948. He taught himself the Spanish language which he perfected over time when talking to his many friends in Spain and ‘over the air’.Website : Cardigan WWII RAF Veteran GW3EJR Celebrates 100th Birthday: See the full story here: LINK Tokyo Ham Fair Cancelled:From : RSGBon2020-07-27JARL, the Japanese national society, has announced the Tokyo Ham Fair -- due to be held on 31 October 2020 and 1 November 2020 -- has been cancelled due to coronavirus.Website : Tokyo Ham Fair Cancelled: See the full story here: LINK Space Radio -- La Mesan Develops Device for the ISS:From : lamesacourier.comon2020-07-26La Mesa resident Kerry Banke jokingly describes himself as “a geek before the term ever came up.” Now retired from his job at Qualcomm, Banke is doing what one would expect a “geek” to do in retirement -- work on a special project for NASA involving his lifelong hobby as a ham radio operator. “Most of my career has been in research and development and electronics as an electrical engineer,” he said. “My connection with NASA began back in ‘94 when I was asked to join a group called ARISS -- Amateur Radio on the International Space Station. We arrange for students at schools to be able to talk to the astronauts on the International Space Station using ham radio. They get to ask questions and get answers from the astronauts.” When Banke joined ARISS, it was just a handful of people. Today the program is international, serving students all over the world. Once a school signs up for the program, it is typically a one-to-two-year wait before an ARISS representative comes and hosts an event. Banke said over the years he has personally brought the ARISS radio to 26 schools around Southern California including Parkway Middle School in La Mesa in 1994 -- the first year of the program. Because of his involvement with ARISS, Banke was asked by NASA to help out with another project -- updating the ham radio aboard the International Space Station (ISS). “It was aging and acting up, as electronics do after some period of time,” he said. “So we started a project to replace it with more advanced and newer equipment.”Website : Space Radio -- La Mesan Develops Device for the ISS: See the full story here: LINK Ham Radio and Emergency Comms: Filling the USGS 'Donut Hole':From : news.itu.inton2020-07-25On July 2nd, shortly before midnight local time in Hawaii, a dozen amateur radio operators did something nobody had ever done before -- something that shows the best in amateur radio and could herald a transformation in the role “hams” (another name for amateur radio operators) can play in emergencies. The Hawaii hams felt an earthquake and sent detailed reports that were immediately used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to assess the magnitude and damage done by this latest tremor. Their reports used a special email program, Winlink Express, that operates through high frequency radio even when normal communication channels are down. It wasn’t the biggest earthquake. At M4.6, it woke a lot of people up, gave them a startle, but did minimal damage. The significance of the event was that it proved -- once again -- that amateur radio operators had found yet another way to play a crucial role in identifying and responding to emergencies. In the best ham tradition, it all came about through volunteer operators solving problems for an agency in need. It’s easy to see how this solution will save lives when there is -- as there will be -- more devastating earthquakes and responders are operating blind because of something called ‘the donut hole.’Website : Ham Radio and Emergency Comms: Filling the USGS 'Donut Hole': See the full story here: LINK PropagationIssued 2020 Jul 28 0905 UTCFlux: 71 A-Index:4. The site will stand above all other ham radio sites by employing the latest technology and professional design/programming standards, developed by a team of community programmers who contribute their skills to the effort.
