Monica D.DSRP Mom My 13-year-old daughter has been enrolled for just a few months and she has already performed live at the Hard Rock Cafe and the Palace of Auburn Hills!!!  No other “music school” in the area can generate these incredible opportunities for its students.  Jason Gittinger and his staff have far exceeded my expectations.  Long live DSRP!” Susan N.DSRP Mom Grownups are entitled to rock out, you know.  But if you re not in high school or college, and you want to play in a band just for fun, good freakin luck.  Are you going to answer some ad in the Metro Times?  Really?  Jason s DSRP provides the matchmaking, the facilities, the instruction, and the motivation to make it happen.  I had a great time and would recommend it to anyone. Kevin R.DSRP Adult Program Alum The Detroit School of Rock and Pop has been a Godsend for my son, Dan (age 13). Jason and his instructors are able to see not only Dan s talent and drive but also his future potential and they take the time to figure out what steps need to happen to get Dan there. When Dan leaves his private lesson he is so excited about what he has learned and can t wait for more. Vickie M.DSRP MomCONTACT US: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Where are you located? There s only one DSRP and our address is:The Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music®, 1109 South Washington Ave., Royal Oak, Michigan 48067We draw the finest students from all over the Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, Port Huron and Windsor region. Thus, we are conveniently located centrally in Royal Oak, just off 696 and Woodward Ave. For the beginning students committed to starting off on the right foot or the advanced students looking for a community of others like themselves, we are less than an hour away from everyone. What days are you open? Our team is comprised of some of the finest music professionals in Detroit and generally they are all out playing music on the weekends. We wouldn t want it any other way, as it s through their shows and experiences that they gain insight to bring back to our students. Thus, all of our weekly scheduled activities take place on Mon-Thurs. The time and day is a mixture of your needs and our availability. What instruments do you teach? We have an amazingly diverse team who can help our students on many different instruments and styles:BASS LESSONS:Electric BassUpright Bass (Jazz Bass)DRUM LESSONS:Drum SetLatin Percussion (Timbales, Cowbells, etc.)Concert Percussion (Snare Drum, Concert Bass Drum, Cyms, Etc.)Hand Drums (Bongos, Congas, Cajon, Djembe, Doumbek)GUITAR LESSONS:Electric GuitarAcoustic GuitarJazz GuitarBanjoMandolin12 String GuitarSlide GuitarClassical GuitarUkulelePIANO / KEYBOARDS LESSONS:PianoJazz PianoClassical PianoKeyboardsSynthesizersComputer ProductionVOICE LESSONS:VoiceBRASS / WOODWIND LESSONS:(Limited Availability)TrumpetTromboneSaxophoneClarinetFluteand more SONGWRITING LESSONS:Songwriting What is the enrollment process? The first step in our enrollment process is to schedule a visit to the school to meet with the school Founder and Executive Producer, Jason Gittinger. Jason will go over all of the programs and services we provide our students as well as get a feel for what skill level you are at, what goals you may have and which people/experiences might suit you best. From there, there s an official enrollment form to fill out and return to the office for scheduling. The normal timeline for this process is one to two weeks before you are enrolled. In what kinds of experiences will I get to participate? At The Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music® we strive to provide the best music lessons in all styles through professional mentorships and unparalleled experiences. Band programs, recording sessions, video shoots, studio circle and live concerts at the regions’ best venues and events are some of the fun activities that we use to get our students the best possible start to their musical life. All of it included in tuition! How much is tuition? Our lessons are $165 a month, for 4 weekly 1/2 hour lessons. Depending on the student and their needs for experience, some people participate in bands as well which, coupled with the lessons, costs from $230 (little kids under 12) to $330 (big kids 12+ and adults) per 4 week month. We never charge extra for concerts or events and never make you buy a t-shirt or costumes for a program for which you are paying. Do you offer scholarships? The Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music is proud to work with our partners at The Live the Music Foundation to help eligible participants in need to receive tuition assistance. In order to be eligible to receive a grant of tuition assistance the student must first be accepted to the program, show motivation to work hard in their studies, and show significant financial need. What is the time commitment?Weekly Private Lessons 1/2 hour per week.Kids Band Program (Under 12) 45 minute rehearsal per week Student Band Program (12-18)  2 hour rehearsal per weekAdult Band Program (Over 18)  2 hour rehearsal per weekJazz Band Program 2 hour rehearsal per weekMonday night Studio Circle 2 hour weekly recording session (Free for enrolled students)Other live shows and special events take place at various times and places all over Metro Detroit. Do I need to own an instrument? We have a ton of instruments in the building if you forget one. But if you want to make progress at home each week, we encourage you to have an instrument on which to practice. As you progress and get comfortable on your personal instrument, you will find yourself wanting to have your personal instrument in lessons and rehearsals to feel comfortable. The exceptions to this are drum sets and keyboards, which people do not bring each week to the DSRP. We provide them, along with amplifiers in all the practice and teaching rooms in the building and on stage at all the shows. Do you sell instruments? We do not. We believe that if we did, it would encourage us to sell you things you don t need. We provide help and guidance only. We do however maintain relationships with some of the best music stores in the region (and country) so if you are in need of advice, we know who to recommend you to contact. What should I bring to my visit day? You. That s it! If we need you to play something, we may ask you to play one of our instruments in the building. If you feel more comfortable on your own guitar or small instrument in order to best demonstrate where you are musically, we encourage you bring one. The building is full of drums, keyboards, and amps though, so there s no need to lug those in to see us. What should I expect at my first lesson? The first lesson for any student is generally spent: 1. getting a feel for any music history or background someone has had, 2. getting an idea of where the student wants to go with their music, 3. setting some goals for the future, and 4. starting to dig into the specific technical discussions that lead to musical growth on one s instrument and planning a practice program for the upcoming week.  What equipment should I bring to my rehearsal or lesson?Drummers: (Sticks, Music)Bass Players: (Bass, Music, Instrument Cable)Guitar Players: (Guitar, Music, Instrument Cable, Capo or accessories)Piano / Keyboard Players: (Music)Singers: (Music) How old are your students? We have had students from age 3 to over 70 in the past. “How old?” is not so much the question, but “How much do they like it and want to learn?” would be a good way to frame things. We have had success with students under 4 before. Under 5, the lessons are spent mostly building a good foundation for later learning. It can be challenging to undo bad habits so we try to focus these years on strengthening the basics. In the beginning, they are generally focused on one-on-one private music lessons. After some progress, by 5 or 6 we have some kids in bands and making recordings and concerts happen! Adults of all ages are welcome at all times in our adult lessons and band programs. It’s fun for our team to be a part of their progress as well. Do you take beginning students?Yes indeed we take beginners. We actually prefer it! We love having the opportunity to build a solid foundation for later learning. Sometimes it can be challenging to undo bad habits, so getting someone into our program at the beginning of their music adventure helps them avoid some pitfalls. We are Metro Detroit s best school of contemporary music for students of all ages and experience levels.https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=23 v=1o5BfgIP9TE Contact us:The Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music®1109 South WashingtonRoyal Oak, Michigan 480671-888-988-ROCKHours: By AppointmentClick Here for Contact Page
