San Mateo County and all cities on the peninsula are working collaboratively to fight the spread of COVID-19. We are also fighting the stigma of the virus. Racism and xenophobia have no place in Daly City. The World Health Organization states that "stigmatization could potentially contribute to more severe health problems, ongoing transmission, and difficulties controlling infectious diseases during an epidemic." Stigma can drive people to hide the illness to avoid discrimination, prevent people from seeking health care immediately, and discourage them from adopting health behaviors. Please treat your fellow community members with kindness during this time. Racism and xenophobia can significantly hurt our efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. According to the CDC, stigma hurts everyone by creating fear or anger towards other people. Stigma affects the emotional or mental health of stigmatized groups and the communities they live in. Stopping stigma is important to making communities and community members resilient.Everyone can help stop stigma related to COVID-19 byknowing the facts and sharing them with others in your community. Diseases can make anyone sick regardless of their race or ethnicity.
