Description:

Nov 21 - Presentation of the Blessed Virgin MarySummary of the Presentation of Mary. This memorial originally marked the dedication of a sixth century church of the Virgin Mary near the Temple of Jerusalem.  This feast is celebrated both in the Roman and the Eastern Orthodox rites. In the East it takes its origin from the dedication of the Church of Our Lady near the Temple area in Jerusalem which took place on 21st November 543. A church was built on the  above site in honour of this mystery. Patrick Duffy recalls some of the themes of the feast. The Eastern Church took it up as a celebration of Mary's presentation to God in the Temple at the age of three, a non-biblical story from the apocryphal gospel of James. Established in the West late in the Middle Ages, the feast was universally observed by the sixteenth century. It celebrates Mary in her grace-filled life, wholly given over to the Holy Spirit from the time of her conception. The feast is found in the liturgical documents of the East in the 11th century and was brought to the papal chapel in Avignon in 1373. A year later King Charles V introduced it to the royal Chapel in Paris, from where it spread through Spain and Germany. It is also now celebrated in the Roman Calendar. The Protoevangelium of JamesAs with Mary’s birth, we read of Mary’s presentation in the temple only in apocryphal literature. In the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James we read that offered Mary to God in the Temple when she was three years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God when Anna was still childless.Stressing the holiness of Mary The feast is best linked with the other feasts of the birth of Mary (8th September) and of the Immaculate Conception (8th December). It highlights the holiness of Mary from the beginning of her life on earth that continued through her early childhood and beyond.Icon of the feastIt is sometimes difficult for modern Westerners to appreciate a feast like this. The Eastern Church has a special icon for this feast included in the top of the iconostasis in every church. This stresses that Mary from the beginning of her life was dedicated to God. She became a greater temple than any made by human hands. God came to dwell in her in a marvelous way and sanctified her for her unique role in God's saving work. At the same time, the magnificence of Mary redounds on her children. They, too, are temples of God and sanctified so that they may enjoy and share in God's saving work.Homily of St GermanusSome of the enthusiasm of the feast is expressed in the homily of St Germanus:"Hail, holy throne of God, divine sanctuary, house of glory, jewel most fair, chosen treasure house, and mercy seat for the whole world, heaven showing forth the glory of God.Purest Virgin, worthy of all praise, sanctuary dedicated to God and raised above all human condition, virgin soil, unplowed field, flourishing vine, fountain pouring out waters, virgin bearing a child, mother without knowing man, hidden treasure of innocence, ornament of sanctity, by your most acceptable prayers, strong with the authority of motherhood, to our Lord and God, Creator of all, your Son who was born of you without a father, steer the ship of the Church and bring it to a quiet harbour."Liturgical Readings for: Saturday, 21st November, 202011-21 The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin MaryFIRST READING         A reading from the book of  Zechariah       2:14-17Rejoice, daughter of Zion; for I am coming.Sing, rejoice, daughter of Zion;for I am comingto dwell in the middle of you –it is the Lord who speaks. Many nations will join the Lord,on that day; they will become his people. But he will remain among you,and you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you.But the Lord will hold Judahas his portion in the Holy Land, and again make Jerusalem his very own.Let all mankind be silent before the lord! For he is awaking and is coming from his holy dwelling. The Word of the Lord.Responsorial Psalm    Lk 1:46-55Response                          The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy is his nameOr                                         Blessed is the Virgin Mary who bore the Son of the eternal Father.1. But to the man who told him this Jesus replied, 'Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?'And stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.'The Gospel of the Lord. ******************************Gospel Reflection       Thursday,     Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary      Matthew 12:46-50Today’s memorial commemorates the presentation of the child Mary in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents. We seldom think of Mary as a child. All the images of Mary we are familiar with are either of Mary as an adult or of Mary in heavenly glory. Yet, when we are first introduced to Mary in the gospels at the moment of her annunciation, we should probably think of her as a very young woman, no more than a teenager. She must have grown up as a child in a very faith-filled home. Otherwise she would not have emerged as a woman of such strong and generous faith at the time of the annunciation. Today’s feast celebrates the fact that as a very young child Mary’s parents presented her to the Lord in the Temple, gave her over to the Lord’s purpose for her life. It was as if her parents were saying, ‘Lord here is our child. We know that she belongs to you more than she belongs to us’. Mary’s parents were recognizing that her relationship with the Lord was even more significant that her relationship with them. Today’s feast reminds us that the most important relationship in our lives is our relationship with the Lord. Every day we try to present ourselves to the Lord, offering ourselves to him. Every day we pray that God’s purpose for our lives would come to pass and that God’s will would be done in our lives. In the gospel reading Jesus declares that those who do the will of his Father, in whose lives God’s will is done, are his brothers and sisters and mother. It was above all Mary who did the will of Jesus’ heavenly Father. In the prayer that Jesus gave us to pray, the Lord’s Prayer, we pray, ‘Father in heaven, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’. Heaven is that state where God’s kingdom has fully come, where God’s will is fully done. To the extent that we do the will of our heavenly Father here and now, something of heaven comes to earth. When we allow God’s purpose for our lives to shape us, as Mary did, then we create an opening for God’s kingdom to come among us________________________________The scripture readings are taken from The Jerusalem Bible, published by Darton, Longman and Todd Ltd and used with the permission of the publishers.  http://dltbooks.com/The Gospel reflection comes from WEEKDAY REFLECTIONS 2019-20: The Word of God is Living and Active by Martin Hogan and published by Messenger Publications  c/f www.messenger.ie/bookshop/________________________________ Sliocht as leabhar  Zachária          2:14-17Abair amhrán agus déan gairdeas, a iníon Shíón;óir, féach, táimse ag teacht.Abair amhrán agus déan gairdeas,a iníon Shíón;óir, féach, táimse ag teachtchun cónaí a dhéanamh i do lár, a deir an Tiarna.Ceanglófar a lán náisiún leis an Tiarna an lá sin;beidh siad ina bpobal aige, agus cónóidh sé in bhur measc, agus aithneoidh tú gurbh é Tiarna na Sluaa chuir chugat mé.Ach beidh seilbh ag an Tiarna ar Iúdá,mar a chomhroinn féin sa talamh naofa, agus déanfaidh sé rogha de Iarúsailéim athuair.Bíodh gach duine ina thost i láthair an Tiarna;óir, tá sé ag éirí chun teacht amach as a áitreabh naofa.Briathar Dé.   Salm le Freagra        Lk 1: 46-55Freagra                        Óir rinne an Té atá cumhachtach nithe móra dom agus is naofa a ainm.1. “Mórann m’anam an Tiarna, agus rinne mo spiorad gairdeas i nDia mo Shlánaitheoir.  Freagra2. As a shepherdkeeps all his flock in view when he stands up in the middle of his scattered sheep, so shall I keep my sheep in view.I shall rescue them from wherever they have been scattered during the mist and darkness. I myself will pasture my sheep, I myself will show them where to rest - it is the Lord who speaks. I shall look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the wounded and make the weak strong. I shall watch over the fat and healthy. I shall be a true shepherd to them.As for you, my sheep, the Lord says this: I will judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and he-goats.The Word of the LordResponsorial Psalm             Ps 22Response                                  The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.1. Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man. Just as all men die in Adam, so all men will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, having done away with every sovereignty, authority and power. For he must be king until he has put all his enemies under his feet and the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death. And when everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subject in his turn to the One who subjected all things to him, so that God may be all in all.The Word of the LordGospel Acclamation                 Mt  24:42Alleluia, alleluia!Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord!Blessings on the coming kingdom of our father David!Alleluia!GOSPEL            A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew              25:31-46He will take his seat on his throne of glory, and he will separate men one from another.Jesus said to his disciples: 'When the Son of Man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate men one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food; 1 was thirsty and you gave me drink; 1 was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me." Then the virtuous will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you?" And the King will answer, "I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me."Next he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For 1 was hungry and you never gave me food; 1 was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink; I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, naked and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me." Then it will be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" Then he will answer, "I tell you solemnly, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me." And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the virtuous to eternal life.'The Gospel of the LordTaken from THE JERUSALEM BIBLE, published and copyright 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Darton, Longman and Todd Ltd and Doubleday, a division of Random House Inc, and used by permission of the publishers.Sollútas Ár dTiarna Íosa Chíost, Rí na nUileCÉAD LÉACHTSliocht as Leabhar,  Ezícéal, Fáidh        34:11-12. 15-17Maidir libhse, a thréad, a deir an Tiarna Dia: tú gaim breith idir caoirigh agus caoirighSeo mar a deir an Tiarna Dia: Cuardóidh mé féin na caoirigh agus beidh a gcúram orm féin amháin. San am sin duirt Íosa lena dheisceabail: “Nuair a thiocfaidh Mac an Duine ina ghlóir agus na haingil uile in éineacht leis, rachaidh sé ina shuí an uair sin i ríchathaoir a ghlóire. Beidh na náisiúin uile cruinnithe os a chomhair, agus déanfaidh sé na daoine a scaradh ó chéile, mar a scarann an t-aoirena caoirigh ó na gabhair. Cuirfidh sé na caoirigh ar a láimh dheis agus na gabhair ar a láimh chlé. Ansin déarfaidh an rí le lucht na láimhe deise: ‘Tagaigí, a lucht bheannaithe m’Athar, glacaigí mar oidhreacht an ríocht a ullmhaíodh daoibh ó thúsú an domhain.
