A Dave Hise original. Hise's WaxyTM is a deadly waxworm imitation, especially for trout and steelhead. Notice the legs on the critters underside? Pretty cool.I have heard conflicting reports about what a waxworm actually is but have come to the believe that it is the larvae of a certain moth, Pyralidae. In the wild, these creatures live as nest parasites in bee colonies where they eat the cocoons, pollen, shed skins of bees; but, they also chew through beeswax. Fish love 'em. Waxy is most effective when dead drifted under an indicator or high stick nymphed through the runs and pools. Designed and hand tied by Dave Hise.

There is a sense of exhilaration when you select a pattern out of your fly box, you fish it, and the fish attack it. There is a further sense of accomplishment and excitement when you create your own flies and the fish devour those. The art of tying flies is an extremely challenging and rewarding activity. It's a pursuit I have consistently labored over for more than 20 years; studying the hatches, scouring entomology books, and testing flies onstream, are all specific stages in this creation process. For the flies featured in this section, you will find that the leg work has been done regarding their efficiency and effectiveness. I have tested these flies endlessly and still use them today, with great success. I have designed flies for the Orvis Company for almost a dozen years now and the patterns listed in this section have been selected for the Orvis product catalog/website. Just remember, my repertoire is almost endless so......... just ask if you have something specific you need; custom work is always an option. Please allow at least 2 weeks (possibly more) for custom work by Dave Hise.

At this point, you have two choices, well actually three. You may purchase the flies directly from Casters Fly Shop, attend one of our many fly tying lessons to learn how to tie them, or purchase them from Orvis. Should you opt to buy directly from us, you may purchase them here or directly through the CASTERS ONLINE FLY SHOP via paypal, credit card or check/money order, or give us a call and we can process the order over the phone. Also, when you find the time, please go to the fly section of the Orvis Online Website and leave a rating and review (good, bad, indifferent) for each pattern that you have utilized; therefore, allowing other anglers to benefit from your experiences.

Note from Tom Rosenbauer:

Dave,

You are truly the most innovative fly tier out there today, and what's even better, you know how to design flies that appeal to fisherman as well as fish. I saw your latest submissions- just brilliant! I mostly love the San Juan/egg combination and that egg-eating sculpin.

Tom Rosenbauer

Marketing Director, Orvis Rod unless stated otherwise. I am on the Daiichi Pro Staff and believe Daiichi hooks and Orvis are the best available. What does this mean to you? Not much, except that you are getting the best of the best being held by the best. Contact Casters for more information.

HOT ORVIS PATTERN! Among the largest of American mayflies, Hexagenia limbata inhabits silty areas of lakes and a few rivers. Hatches usually start between May and early July, depending on the local climate and conditions. The Pere Marquette and Manistee rivers in Michigan are famous for this hatch. Hise's Medusa - Hot Pink

This worm cluster pattern fishes especially well during high water periods; however, it is also effective when fished in low, clear water in the deeper runs and pools in streams from North Carolina to Virginia, Colorado to California. It is productive for trout, steelhead, carp, smallmouth, and even panfish. It can be DEADLY under the right conditions but..... so are many other patterns. Available in size 12 and 14.

Hise's Medusa - Red

HOT ORVIS PATTERN! A San Juan worm gone CREEEEPY. The Medusa worm cluster pattern fishes especially well during high water periods; however, it is also effective when fished in low, clear waterin the deeper runs and pools in streams from North Carolina to Virginia, Colorado to California. It is productive for trout, steelhead, carp, smallmouth, and even panfish. It can be DEADLY under the right conditions but..... so are many other patterns. Available in size 12 and 14.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Big Fly Big Fish

A sculpin pattern that is effective for trout, steelhead, and smallmouth bass. It is most productive when fished under a sink-tip fly line, swung, and/or stripped along the river bottom. Remember, streamers are most productive on rain swollen rivers where large predatory fish are on the prowl for a big meal. Sculpins are just the morsel. Big Fly Big Fish is deadly on the Tailwater rivers of North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Montana during periods of generation. Available in size 2 and 4.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Hairy Fry

This fry pattern works in any situation where fry are abundant along the streams edge. It is particularly effective in the Great Lakes during the spring when the salmon fry are in the soft water along the banks. Swing it under a floating line along the drop-offs and runs or dead drift it under an indicator; both techniques receive viscious strikes. This is an excellent pattern to use if you want to catch a steelhead in the Great Lakes in March, April and May. Available in size 6, 8 and 10.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Hex

This pattern is a great imitation of most large burrowing mayfly nymphs; particularly those of the Ephemeridae family- Hexagenia and Green Drake, to name a few. It is extremely effective when fished under an indicator for trout, steelhead, salmon, and smallmouth. Or..... strip it just below the surface for a voracious surface strike. It works especially well on the downswing of peak high water periods, where the nymphs are pulled from their silty burrows into the main current. Available in size 6 and 8.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Nymph-o-Minnow-ac

"Is it a nymph or is it a minnow"? In actuality, it doesn't really matter because the fish SMASH IT. Nymph-o-minnow-ac is most effective when fished on the swing, or dead drifted under an indicator. Roll it through the dark slots amidst gravel runs or through the heads and tailouts of pools. It is a great searching pattern for various species when few patterns are working. This articulated minnow/nymph has a "natural" flutter which is rarely achieved with non-articulated flies. Available in size 6, 8, and 10.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Ooey Gooey Grub

This squishy, gooshy fly pattern is an excellent imitation of any light toned larvae or grub of caddis, bees, wasps, flies, beetles, etc. It works particularly well for steelhead from fall through spring; but, is deadly for trout in any situation. Find a wasp or hornets nest hanging over the river and drift this pattern through the run (under an indicator). Try it on the delayed harvest and wild trout streams of North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. DEADLY! Available in size 6, 8, 10, and 12.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Sly and the Family Stone

This pattern is a spittin' image of the slim bodied stones found in many trout streams from late winter through spring; Taeniopteryx and Allocapnia. Sly and the Family Stone is a trout and steelhead slayer. It is most productive when fished under a right-angle or greased-line rig, especially during a behavioral drift of the aforementioned stonefly families. This articulated stonefly nymph has superb natural movement and flutter. It also makes a great prospector nymph. Available in size 12, 14, and 16.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Epeorus Nymph

Epeorus nymphs are dark-hued clingers that are easily distinguished by their two tails, a physical characteristic shared by no other mayfly nymph. Many people confuse Epeorus nymphs with another mayfly clinger, the Pale Evening Dun. Epeorus nymphs, like all mayfly clingers, are well-adapted to their fast-water environment. Their body, head, and legs are all flattened to hug the rock and minimize the force of the current pushing on them. Tied by Dave Hise with inspiration from Ulf Hagstrom, Oliver Edwards, and Steve Thornton. Available in size 14.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Hise's Sumpin' Ugly - Minnow

The Sumpin' Ugly Series of articulated flies was designed for those anglers who love to 'swing' for their quarry. This minnow/baitfish pattern is made mostly of spun marabou, and when combined with the articulation has an irresistible movement and flutter. Swing it, strip it, or dead drift it under a Depth Charge sink-tip for the best results. Steelhead, trout, salmon, and bass love it. Designed and tied by Dave Hise. Please allow 3 weeks for delivery. Available in size 4.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

The name should explain it all. The Mary Poppins of fly patterns is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Base materials for this articulated streamer are mostly rabbit, mallard, and Arctic fox but some beads and Swishers Wiggly Hackle are also thrown in the mix. Strip it, swing it, dead drift it. This pattern can be fished with a floating line but fish it under a sink tip fly line for the best results. Great for smallmouth, steelhead, trout, golden dorado, you name it. Designed and tied by Dave Hise. Available in size 4; which is about 31/2" in length.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

The Dick Smith - Copper especially large smallies. You'll be amazed by its effectiveness. It fishes well all season (May through September) under a floating fly or sink tip fly line. Fish it "slow" along the weed beds and along the deep banks. The Dick Smith also catches trout and steelhead. This is a variation of a pattern originated by an old angling friend, Dick Smith, who I consider Mr. Smallmouth. Many color combination's are possible but gold and yellow, or copper and yellow can be deadly. Available in size 2 and 4.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Wiggler Variant

The PM Blonde is probably one of the better known burrowing mayfly patterns of the day (in the Great Lakes Region). The Wiggler Variant is a variation of the PM Blonde but is meant to represent both Ephemerella nymphs and small forage fish; the built up bullet head is a dead give-away. This pattern is one of my favorite trout/steelhead flies, next to Eggi Juan and Hetero-genius Nymph. It is also productive for salmon, carp, smallmouth bass, and panfish. Swing it, dead drift it, or strip it for the best results. Available in size 6 and 8.

Hise's Ridonculous Cray

I refer to the ridiculously absurd as...... RIDONCULOUS. Hise's Ridonculous Cray was designed for smallmouth bass but also has the tendency to catch steelhead and carp. This pattern is an extremely time consuming pattern to create but is well worth the effort. It is most effective in the tailouts and throughout "fish depth" gravel runs; especially during low light hours. Strip, strip, strip, and let it settle; strip, strip, strip, and let it settle- BAM, POW, BANG= Smallmouth. Available in size 2 and 4. Call for pricing and availability.

Hise's Marabou Minnow

Looking for a deadly minnow pattern? Hise's Marabou Minnow is an articulated streamer which was designed for a multitude of species; brown trout, rainbow trout, steelhead, king salmon, smallmouth bass, you name it. It is most effective when swung or stripped under a sink tip fly line; but, also works quite well when fished near the surface under a floating line. The combination of marabou and articulation gives Marabou Minnow an irresistible movement that the fish can't resist. Available in size 2, and 4. Call for price and availability.

Hise's Burrowing Mayfly Nymph

Looking for a deadly burrowing mayfly (green drake, hexagenia, dark green drake, etc.) pattern? Hise's Burrowing Mayfly Nymph is a nymph pattern which was designed to imitate a multitude of burrowing mayflies found throughout the country; trout, steelhead, smallmouth bass, you name it. It is most effective when high stick or indicator nymphed under a floating line but also works quite well when "crawled" along the river bottom near silty areas. Available in size 6,and 8.

Hise's Waxy the Waxworm

Another Dave Hise original. I have heard conflicting reports about what a waxworm actually is but have come to the believe that it is the larvae of a certain moth, Pyralidae. Available in size 6, and 8.
