A Florida school board is set to hold an emergency meeting this week to consider a mask mandate as more than 5,000 students and hundreds of employees in its district are in isolation or quarantine because of a surge in coronavirus cases and possible exposure.

Hillsborough County Public Schools, which includes Tampa, said Monday that 5,599 of the district’s students and 316 of its staff were either in isolation because of a positive test or in quarantine after coming into close contact with someone who tested positive.

TAMPA — When Hillsborough County School Board members vote Tuesday on a $3.2 billion budget, they will do so with the knowledge that their leadership team is calling for a year of belt-tightening, and maybe two.

Reserve funds have dropped by $32 million since a year ago, superintendent Addison Davis told the board last week in a review session to prepare for Tuesday’s televised meeting.

In the Tampa Bay area school districts are entrusted with multi billion dollar budgets that directly impact over 500,000 students, 50,000 employees and thousands of vendors and service providers.

Elected school boards in each of the counties are tasked with overseeing these dollars and providing oversight.
