We encourage you to learn more, come visit us, and discover if Berkeley is the right fit for your family. Students in Lower Division build fundamental skills through a love of learning in a positive, nurturing environment. Our youngest learners are encouraged to discover their unique talents as well as the wonders of the world around them. As our Middle Division students enter their transitional years, they are surrounded by every imaginable opportunity to explore and discover who they are and who they aspire to become. The Upper Division program is designed to provide students with the atmosphere and advantages of a small liberal arts college. With access to a wealth of opportunities, students receive an exceptionally well-rounded education. We have a robust program in the fine and performing arts for every age and skill level. Opportunities abound for budding artists in painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, silk dying, photography, music, drama, set design, video production, and so much more. Our Lykes Center for the Arts houses a 634-seat theatre and other spaces to showcase the arts. Additionally, our recital hall, black box theatre, art galleries, visual art studios, fabrication studio, and digital art labs provide ample space for students to create, perform, and showcase their work. More than 80 percent of students participate in at least one sport at Berkeley. Our full range of varsity and junior varsity teams in the Middle and Upper Divisions includes 16 sports and more than 80 teams. Berkeley is a 4A school and a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association and the Florida West Coast League. Our student-athletes have won more than 70 FHSAA Academic Team State Championships and have been the Overall Team 4A Academic Champion seven of the last nine years. We offer a variety of opportunities to grow beyond the classroom through more than 100 extracurricular clubs and activities, to give back through purposeful community service, and to discover new interests and talents. It s what we call the Berkeley Experience. Whether it s performing more than 30,000 hours of community service, traveling abroad to learn a new culture, or live streaming a Friday night football game, our students enjoy, and are supported by, a well-rounded extracurricular experience. Thanks to generous support from our alumni, current and past families, faculty, and community friends, Berkeley is providing the best learning environment for our students. Using a variety of giving opportunities and options, our donors are committed to our mission by supporting the needs of the school today and for generations to come. Berkeley Preparatory School presents a safe, nurturing environment featuring inspiring teaching, engaged parents and alumni, and outstanding resources, including incomparable facilities on a beautiful campus. We offer an exceedingly broad curricular and extracurricular program enjoyed by an exceptional and diverse community of learners following personalized paths, who relish a supportive culture, the school s Episcopal identity, its ongoing commitment to continual self-improvement, and a deeply authentic dedication to making a positive difference in the world. We develop and expect strong character, promote innovation and growth, and desire excellence in all that we do. Simply put, the educational journey at Berkeley is truly extraordinary. While Kayla s academics are exceptional, making her a National Merit Finalist (an elite group of the top 1% in the country), a National Honor Society and English Honor Society member, a writing tutor and more, her most admirable quality is her compassion and giant heart that is always looking for ways to lend a hand to others. Kayla was part of the Berkeley Global Scholars Program, a leader in the Diversity and Cultural Appreciation club, and was involved in GOALS (Girls Outside Adventure Leadership Service). Kayla partook in International and local services throughout her life within and outside of Berkeley. She initiated programs starting as young as her Pre-K years in Manhattan. Through Berkeley, she was able to be part of a service trip to an indigenous community in Peru. Through church, her team was dedicated to providing one-on-one English tutoring services to immigrants in Queens and the Bronx this past summer. On top of her many activities and acts of service, Kayla participated in sports all four years of high school, falling in love with rowing and the camaraderie of the crew team.On a day that the seniors are to be celebrated, Kayla is rallying Berkeley families to donate to a food drive to offer support and aid to local families most affected by the pandemic. That is the essence of Kayla, to divert attention from herself and bring awareness and assistance to those in need. Kaden has been a Berkeley Buccaneer since the grade 7, when he immediately became a member of the Berkeley choir. Once he reached high school, he continued his singing career with the all-male a capella group, the Beatitones. After a year of singing, he decided to try a new sport to accompany his a capella career. During his sophomore year, he joined the Berkeley crew team. He rowed his way to third overall in the state of Florida in the Men s Junior 4+ category, which secured Kaden and his boat a spot at Scholastic Youth Nationals in Camden, New Jersey. At Nationals, Kaden and his boat raced hard and placed 18th in the nation, showing the country that Berkeley Rowing means business. After Kaden s all-sophomore boat got a taste of victory, they did not stop and qualified for Nationals again the next year, preparing for an even more successful senior season. While talking about his high school life, he said, The time I have spent practicing with the boys (his boat consists of Bill van de Groep, James Noh, and Donovan Simonton) were the best times of high school. The bonds I made through the team will last me a lifetime. During his senior year, Kaden joined the Treblemakers (a Berkeley a capella group) and has completed a full triathlon. He is looking forward to graduation and enjoying his last semester with his friends.Photograph and text by Bill G. Annie has a particular passion for music and is always laughing and smiling. Her bright personality can light up any room.Photograph and text by Julia D. 21 Charvi S. '20 is a senior who has been a student at Berkeley since grade 5. Her interests include participating in Math Club, broadcasting for the BBN, and dancing. Charvi has been an avid dancer since the age of 4 when she began taking ballet, tap, and jazz classes. She later began experimenting with Bollywood dance styles, which eventually led her to receive formal training in the classical Indian dance style, Bharatanatyam. Her favorite styles include classical, Bollywood, and hip-hop.Photograph and text by Bella G. '20 Battle H. '20 has been a member of the Berkeley community since he was a wee lad in Pre-K. Battle would say that his main extracurricular interests include lacrosse, eating, video games, and most of all, reselling streetwear and sneakers. He began his reselling career as a way to make some extra money, but quickly began to associate himself with the street clothing community. Sneakers are his favorite thing to resell. Battle also won the Berkeley pie eating contest during his junior year.Photograph and text by Leo C. '20 My favorite memory at Berkeley has been Field Day. Field Day is so much fun, and you get to make friends with people in other grades because the teams are a combination of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It is a day where you can get rid of stress before exams and everyone can just let loose and have fun. I also like how competitive it gets between Cope and Mitre; but at the end of the day, it s all just for fun. Everyone takes part in Field Day. The events are not only based on athletic ability, which I like, because it makes the teams work better together and everyone has more fun as a whole. I have really enjoyed all of the trips that we have had the honor to take in Middle Division. In 6th grade, we went to space camp. In 7th grade, we had the opportunity to go to Savannah. And at the beginning of 8th grade, we were able to go to the dude ranch. All of these experiences will be remembered by me forever. Something that inspires me in my daily life is seeing students working together and collaborating toward a goal. It shows me the true sense of community on our campus, and pushes me to work with others, and make lots of friends. I m also passionate about public speaking and dance. I have the opportunity to express my passion of dance in the annual Middle Division Variety Show, and I am able to show my love of public speaking in the Forensics Speech competitions. Overall, Berkeley is an amazing school where I can express myself and have fun with my friends at the same time. Winning the Junior Class Presidential Election was one of the happiest moments of my life. Preparing for the speech was tremendously scary, as my fear of public speaking and lack of significant experience obviously was extremely intimidating. But, with support from my Berkeley community, I confidently approached the stage and delivered a powerful, comedic, and inspiring speech that the whole class enjoyed. Hearing my name announced as the official leader of my Berkeley class filled me with joy that I will never forget. One of my favorite memories is my first Berkeley swim meet. I joined the swim team in sixth grade and it was time for our first meet. As I was swimming I heard my teammates cheering me on, and it helped me push through the event. It was a great experience overall, because I felt like the team had bonded and it was so fun to cheer on my teammates. I am inspired by the goodness I choose to see in the world. My perspective is made possible by always maintaining a positive attitude and optimistic outlook; I look for the good in everything, as I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I choose to surround myself with people that continually lift me up, and I find hope in small, meaningful connections, such as sharing a heartfelt smile with a stranger. You never really know what someone is going through, and a random act of kindness might just be what inspires them to help others as well, starting a ripple effect of positivity! I am inspired and look up to numerous people in my life. However, without my parents I could not possibly be the person I am today. I have always been supported in whatever I pursued in life, including my passions and ambitions. Additionally, my morals and principles that I apply in my daily life were taught to me by my parents. I always to live life to my fullest and listen to my heart. For this I am forever grateful. Through these life lessons I have been able to achieve things that I never thought I could. From a national title and a college offer in my sport, to the will to succeed in anything I pursue in my life. I am thankful for the opportunity to attend one of the most prestigious schools in the nation. It is this unconditional support that inspires me to get up at 3:30 in the morning, to get a head start in my sport and work, to ensure that I am able to fit everything into an already full day. I am forever gratified for the things my parents have sacrificed, and done for me. One of my favorite Berkeley memories was when I went on a service trip to Vietnam with one of my best friends. We were there for two weeks just traveling through the country visiting three major regions: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta. In the Mekong Delta, we went to a school where we were building a playground for the kids and teaching them English. Just playing games and being surrounded by all of the students with my best friend is a memory I would never forget, because of the interaction and impact we made on the people's lives. I am inspired by many different things in my everyday life, but I am most inspired by the simple, yet complex idea of knowledge. I have been able to learn from amazing teachers and travel the world to learn new insights on life. Knowing that there are infinite ways to think about one topic opens a whole new world of opportunities to experience. Additionally, when I see people come together for one cause, I am very inspired to join in and learn what means so much to them. The day was magical for all considering the event marked the first Berkeley Commencement ever held during a pandemic.
