The Day was observed through the conduct of a COVID-19 awareness session(pictured)including the 67-minute community service involving the cleaning and painting of the Headquarters of the Disabled Union in Zalingei, Central Darfur. In his message on the day, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres said: “We mark this Day at a time when the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic endangers everyone, everywhere, and especially the most vulnerable". The day is celebrated annually on 18 July. Photo by Mohammed Idriss, UNAMID. 20 July, UNAMID’s civilian, military and police personnel, jointly distributed hygiene materials to representatives of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Straha and North camps, near the Mission’s Team Site in Nertiti, Central Darfur. These efforts are part of the Mission’s overall response to support the host community in combating the spread of COVID-19. UNAMID Photo. 21 July; a UNAMID integrated team comprising of UNAMID’s Senior civilian, police and military personnel as well as representatives of OCHA,WFP and UNHCR, visited El Geneina town in West Darfur, following recent communal violence in the town. The team met with Sudan key officials at the Wali’s office. They discussed the security situation and efforts being made to de-escalate tensions in the area. The team also visited affected communities and explored possible support by UNAMID and UN Country Team to address the situation, including mediation, humanitarian assistance, and strengthening of protection mechanisms. Photo by Ibrahim Khater, UNAMID. 27 July; UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR) Ms. Anita Kiki Gbeho(left), met with the Sudan Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Omer Gamereddin Ismail, at the latter’s office in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. During the meeting, both parties discussed latest developments in Darfur, including strengthening of coordination between UNAMID and the Transitional Government of Sudan in response to increased violent incidents in the region and the Mission’s support to the Government’s National Plan on Protection of Civilians.
