Sunday, August 8, 2010 Rio de Janeiro

From the Iguazu Falls we flew to Sao Paulo and then drove a very windy road to Paraty. Moe and I wandered through the cobblestone streets of the quaint town but two days was enough time to spend there. Paraty was having a literary festival so the streets were packed with people and entertainment. Too bad that we don't speak Portuguese otherwise we might have enjoyed the book readings a bit more. At night we were invited to a person's house whose family owned one of the original houses from that town. We dressed up with hats, wigs and umbrellas from the olden days and took some crazy photos.
The next morning we continued along the coast through superb scenery where we got to our final destination Rio de Janeiro, the city of speedoes and tangas (dental floss)!!! Our hotel is 5 minutes from Cobacabana Beach and today would have been a great beach day but we had to make our way through the sites of Rio. We took pictures with Christ the Reedemer, a cathedral that holds 20,000 people, and experienced the sunset on Sugarloaf mountain. Rio, even though it is deemed as a very unsafe city, is quite magical. I had a good feeling about it as soon as I arrived. Tomorrow better be another sunny day because we are going to hang out at Copacabana Beach and get some great pics of the swim wear. I'm on the loose but only for a few more days!!!1 comment: Thursday, August 5, 2010 Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls borders Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The torrential Iguazu Falls crosses the State of Panama in Southern Brazil from East to West. A few kilometres before its junction with the Panama River it forms one of the most splendorous natural beauties of the world.....Iguazu Falls. There are 275 falls over a 3 km area. It is no surprise that UNESCO declared the region a World Heritage Site in 1986. Moe and I walked for two days through the trails and catwalks to see all the marvels. It was truly amazing!!! Tomorrow it's Samba time.........I'm off to Brazil.1 comment: Wednesday, August 4, 2010 Buenos Aires

Hola everyone. Our stay in the capital was cut a little short because one of the flights from Bariloche to Buenos Aires was cancelled so our flight got bumped to later at night. We were supposed to arrive in the afternoon but we came in at 1:00 a.m. So, we technically missed an afternoon. Moe and I still saw a lot but we had no rest and had to get things done quickly. We checked out the Sunday markets and saw a few sites but since it was Sunday everything was closed. At night we had a great time because we took tango lessons. Our instructor was hilarious and I have a certificate to prove my ability to tango!!! After the lessons we had a nice steak dinner and saw an awesome tango show. The cast interacted with the audience and the bottles of wine kept flowing. We met a great couple from Cambridge and went back to their room for some more wine afterwards. The next day we had our city tour. The capital is made up of many distinct neighbourhoods, La Boca, Recoleta, San Telmo. I saw Eva Peron's grave....very cool. We shopped on the famous Florida street and bought tango music and leather purses. At night, Renata told us about this improv drum group. She told us that is was at a bar and they are well known in BA. When we got there, I felt like I was at a rave with some university students. I enjoyed the music but the young crowd in the warehouse was too much for this old girl. We had a brilliant time in the capital. I loved it so much that I would go back. Next we are off to Iguazu Falls. This hopefully will be more relaxing than the hectic lifestyle in Buenos Aires. Adios muchachas!!! I'm on the loose again. 1 comment: Saturday, July 31, 2010 Bariloche, Argentina

Our journey to Bariloche was an interesting one. Taking public transportation is always unpredictable. It would have been quite a nice journey except for the smelly French men sitting behind us. They smelled so bad that the odour stunk up the entire bus. I was happier at the border crossing, freezing to death but with fresh air then sitting in front of the bad body odoured men!!
In the skiing town we had a tour of a chocolate factory. We laughed so hard because the girl showed us someone making chocolate which took 30 seconds and then we had a sample of it. That was the entire tour. It took longer to eat my sample then it did to have the tour itself. Afterwards we walked through town and enjoyed a beautiful big steak. The chef gave us some lessons on what type was the best and how to cook it. He wanted to take us dancing but we wanted to go to bed. We are such party animals!!!
Today we had a beautiful sunny day at Bariloche's ski hill. There were so many runs open and we had an awesome time. Can you believe it.......I was skiing in Argentina in July! I was a little bitter that I lost my mitt on the gondola on the way up to the first hill. The Mexican guys in the gondola with me thought is was quite hilarious. I didn't though. We skied down and luckily no one wanted one mitt. I was much happier when I got it back. I found the runs somewhat difficult because the fresh powder was deep and they were not all groomed the way I like them. We celebrated another wonderful day on tour with a cheese fondue. Ahh, bread dipped in warm gooey cheese......there is nothing better than that!! Tomorrow we are off to Buenos Aires to shop, to do the tango and to eat more beef. Life is good!! 1 comment: Wednesday, July 28, 2010 Puerto Varas, Chile

Moe and I flew south to Puerto Varas which is Chile's beautiful lake district. It encompasses a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the high peaks of the Andes. It is quite chilly here and we are wearing most of the stuff in our backpacks. We tried to climb a volcano but the snow and ice didn't allow us to get to the cafeteria at the top. Our guide Renata loved it there and took lots of pictures because she is from Brazil and never gets a chance to see the snow. Moe and I, well, we were not that impressed. We get the darn stuff six months of the year.
This area around Puerto Varas is filled with snow capped mountains, emerald lakes, smoking volcanoes, forest and glaciers. We walked to a beautiful scenic waterfall, checked out Puerto Montt, the largest city in this area, and tasted some unusual types of things found in the sea. The sea urchin wasn't really appetizing but I loved all the mussels. I was on seafood overdose after that experience. Afterwards we drove to Frutillar, a small German town, to eat some yummy Kuchen (cake). During and after the second world war many Germans settled in this area and built homes, schools, and churches.
We are leaving beautiful Chile tomorrow and I'll be on the loose in Argentina by dinner time.1 comment: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 Wine tours in Chile

Today my tour started. It was a bit of surprise to find out that there are only two people on the tour. Uno, dos....Tanya and Maureen. Quite hilarious eh? My guide is Renata who is our age and from Brazil. She will be taking us around for the next week and we pick up a mom and son in Argentina. We are making a top 10 list of why having only two people on tour is better than having more people. We are now on #8.

So, on day #1 we went to two different wineries, a very commercial one and one that was family run. The art of wine making is so well done in Chile. Now I know what to buy when I get back home. I tasted a lot of different wines which ultimately led to an early slumber. I love Chile!!!1 comment: Monday, July 26, 2010 Valparaiso

Today we had a sunny trip to the coastal towns of Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. Vina del Mar is known as the "Garden City." Its charm was the architecture, the streets and palaces. Valparaiso whose origins date back to 1536 has been declared a Cultural World Heritage Site and is the seat of the Legislative Power. It has magic with picturesque elevators, colourful neighbourhoods and unforgettable water scenery.
Another great day was had by all. Can't wait for the wine tours tomorrow.1 comment: Older PostsHomeSubscribe to:Posts (Atom)About MeTanya on the loose"A-foot and light-hearted I take to the open road.
