Description:

Non-Embrionic Stem Cell research appears to be more stable and negates eithical and political issus. This is a breakthrough in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, a disorder of the brain and nervous system that progresses with the loss of dopaminergic neurons. Instead of replacing those neurons with embryonic stem cells, scientists are reprogramming a patient’s own skin cells into “induced pluripotent stem cells” or IPSCs. In other words, common skin cells are transformed in the lab into highly potent stem cells, negating the ethical and political issues that have long plagued stem cell research.Summit 4 Stem Cell s Mission (www.summit4stemcell.org)  is to Raise Funding to Support Non-Embryonic Stem Cell research and support a first pilot project of implanting these Non-Embryonic Stem cells into Parkinsons’ Patients to hopefully cure Parkinson and other Neurological Diseases. There should be a very broad application to a variety of diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson s disease, ALS, spinal cord injuries, macular degeneration and glaucoma. By: Beth KanterMillennials (those young, tech savvy, and passionate younger donors) will – as I learned at last month’s Millennial Donor Summit.  Millennials don’t just want to write a check to your organization – they want to combine their personal passions and interests and engage others in your mission.     Are you facilitating this with your fundraising approaches? The Parkinson’s Association is doing just that.   They have organized a fundraiser called “Summit4Stemcell.”  The goal is to fund non-embryonic stem cell research that will result in a treatment for Parkinson’s while inspiring people with the disease to move beyond their physical limitations.     A group of 17 passionate mountain climbers is raising money for this project by climbing Mt. Kiilimanjaro (19,340 ft high!) in September. You might be wondering why I’m writing about this?  It’s personal. My cousin, Rebecca Kanter (a millennial) is one of the climbers.   She is doing the climb in honor of my Dad who is suffers from Parkinsonism – there is no cure.    You can treat the symptoms and my Dad is working very hard on doing physical therapy which has allowed him to walk, with a walker.    Having been a competitive swimmer and surfer, he knows the discipline of working hard for a goal.  It was not unlike how he has worked hard as a doctor and in the Navy during WW2.Here’s why Rebecca is taking on this challenge in her own words:Having done some research into climbing Kilimanjaro, I understand what an enormous physical undertaking it is. And having a relative who suffers from Parkinsonism, I understand some of the physical challenges the condition presents. Just weeks before, my father had returned from a trip to New Jersey where he was visiting his uncle, my great-uncle Earl. Uncle Earl — my grandfather’s only living brother — was a prominant doctor in his community before he retired. Uncle Earl has Parkinsonism, and was in the hospital for his health-related issues. His family has since brought him home, but as my father described to me, they’re having to make adjustments to the house to accomodate my uncle’s physical challenges. Listening to the NPR report, especially the voices of the people (who I would later learn were Ken and Brad) taking on this enormous undertaking of sumitting Kilimanjaro while dealing with Parkinson’s, made me think about my Uncle Earl, the challenges he is facing in his life, and the opportunities — like summiting a mountain — that are no longer available to him. I was overwhelmed by the inspiration to do something. If you want to help find a cure for Parkinsons and cheer on my cousin, Rebecca, and inspire Dad to continue to work beyond his physical limitations, please consider a donation to support this research in honor of my Dad or Rebecca Climb Kilimanjaro to Conquer Parkinson’s Two dozen extraordinary adventurers will be training for their September 6th ascent of Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro to help fund a treatment and possible cure for Parkinson’s disease.  What makes this group different?  Some of them have Parkinson’s, an incurable degenerative movement disorder that robs the brain of dopamine and eventually cripples the body.  It has affected the lives of people from all walks of life, including actor Michael J. Fox, former Attorney General Janet Reno, and the late three-time world heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali.The estimated 1.5 million Americans who have the disorder await a cure, but the           climbers are already seeing beyond the mountain as they continue their training. “We know the climb is a courageous act,” said Sherrie Gould, nurse practitioner at Scripps’ClinicMovementDisordersCenterand brainchild-leader of the Kilimanjaro climb. “But we want to inspire all who face seemingly insurmountable odds, to rise above them and escape the limitations we all set for ourselves. It’s time to not only meet this mountain, but to move it!”The trekkers seem to be right on track since research suggests that climbing and other forms of heart-pumping movement may enhance mobility in Parkinson’s patients. Gould and neurologist Melissa Houser, MD, the director of the Scripps Clinic Movement Disorders Center, are daily witnesses to the benefits of exercise in their more active patients; patients who display more strength, better balance, and a more positive outlook on life than those who are sedentary.   Strength, stamina, and optimism are helpful qualities for managing-day-to day, but will be critical to passing the medical exams the hiker-patients must take to meet, at 19,339 feet,Africa’s highest mountain.Besides what promises to be a peak experience for the climbers, there may be the bigger payoff of advancing science for a treatment and possible cure for all who have Parkinson’s. Dr. Melissa Houser from Scripps Clinic and Dr. Jeanne Loring from the Center of Regenerative medicine will work collaboratively on a project to develop dopaminergic neurons from the skin cells of six Scripps Clinic volunteers with Parkinson’s Disease.  However, such research takes funding. Therefore, the team of hikers, who will pay all their own expenses, seek donations, large and small, at: www.summit4stemcell.org.All fundraising is tax deductible and done through the support and guidance of the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego.  The hiker s Phase I goal is to raise a minimum of $500,000 and  Phase II goal is $1,500,000 jump-start what could be a ground-breaking study to treat and possibly conquer Parkinson’s disease and many others.
