No comments: Kids and Cancer Fund distributes over $29,000 in grant support for pediatric/oncology care
Throughout the year, the Kids and Cancer Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation provides financial support patients, especially children and their families, facing medical treatment for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
So far this year, Kids and Cancer has made over $18,000 in grants to provide financial support to children and families undergoing treatment.
The fund also makes possible annual grants to organizations that treat or provide resources to children and their families as they face treatment and care.
Recently, Kids and Cancer supported $29,300 to 13 organizations that support those impacted by cancer and life-threatening illnesses.
The Bradford Hospital Foundation received $5,900 to assist with the needs of children and their families as they receive care at the hospital. The Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Shriners Hospital for Children (Erie, PA), St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital each received $3,000. The Olean General Hospital Foundation received $1,200.
According to William Black, Kids and Cancer president, the Kids and Cancer committee views these grants as essential as many of the child patients and families the committee supports have to travel to receive treatment from these hospitals.
The fund also made a number of grants to organizations that provide support outside of medical treatment, whether it be housing, support groups and more.
The Pink Pumpkin Project, also a fund at CRCF, received $1,000, to support breast cancer fighters and survivors. The Laurie Anzivine Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship arm of the Pink Pumpkin Project that supports students who have had family members undergo cancer treatment, also received $1,000.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh received a grant of $1,500 to help provide low-cost housing to families while their loved ones undergo treatment. Special Spaces, a nonprofit that provides bedroom makeovers for children undergoing cancer treatment, received $1,000.
Thon, a student-led philanthropic organization of Penn State that provides emotional and financial support for children facing cancer, received $2,000. Care for Children, a McKean (PA) County-based nonprofit whose mission is to improve quality of life for children of all abilities, received $700.
All of these grants are made in honor of the children and families we support during the year, added Black. We cannot help every organization, but these in particular are important to us.
These grants come at an important time, added Black.
Throughout the [COVID-19 pandemic] many cancer patients did not get the help they need, and now their cancer is more advanced than it would be under normal circumstances, said Black. Cancer does not stop during pandemic, so neither will we.
Donations and memorials can be made to the Kids and Cancer Fund at CRCF, 301 North Union St., Suite 203, Olean, NY 14760 or online at cattfoundation.org.No comments: Eric Smith To Be Released From Prison in November

No comments: DEP, State Police Urge Public to Report Missing Portable Nuclear GaugeTHE DEVICE HAS BEEN FOUND.

Company offers $1,000 reward for the gauges return

Williamsport, PA The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Pennsylvania State Police are assisting in the search for a missing portable nuclear gauge containing sealed sources of radioactive material that belongs to Pennsylvania-based CMT Laboratories. The company is offering a $1,000 reward for its safe return.

An image of the gauge is included at the top of this press release. Anyone who finds the gauge should not handle it directly, but rather maintain distance, limit time of proximity, and immediately contact Pennsylvania State Police Lamar Barracks at 570-726-6000. A trained individual will recover the gauge.

It is critical for anyone who has information about the lost nuclear gauge to contact state police immediately, DEP Bureau of Radiation Protection Director David Allard said. As long as the device is not tampered with or damaged, it presents no hazard to public safety.

The gauge was reported missing by the company the evening of Wednesday, October 13, 2021. The gauges authorized user completed their work at approximately 6:00 PM and inadvertently departed the job site without properly securing the gauge in its case. The vehicle left the job site, in the proximity of E. Valley Road, Logan Township, Clinton County, and traveled toward Loganton when the loss of the gauge was noticed.

If the gauge is badly damaged or was struck by a vehicle, there is potential for contamination.

CMT Laboratories is licensed by DEP to possess and use the gauge. This type of nuclear gauge is commonly used to evaluate the properties of building materials at construction sites throughout the commonwealth. The radioactive material contained within the gauge is believed to be in a safe, shielded position. However, it may have been damaged in the fall from the transport vehicle.

The nuclear density gauge is a Troxler Model 3440. The gauge is yellow in color and about the size of a shoe box, with an electronic keypad and a metal rod extending from the top surface. The Troxler gauge contains approximately 9 millicuries of Cesium-137 and 44 millicuries of Americium-241. The radioactive material is double encapsulated within the device to protect its integrity.

Anyone who finds the gauge should not handle it directly, but rather maintain distance, limit time of proximity, and immediately contact Pennsylvania State Police Lamar Barracks at 570-726-6000. A trained individual will recover the gauge.

No comments: Philanthropist, PA Second Lady, shares experience of immigration with Penn State DuBois students

Gisele Fetterman spoke to Penn State DuBois students via Zoom about issues faced by Latino families in the Unites States.
DuBOIS, PA Students in the Penn State DuBois Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program had a unique opportunity on October 12, when Pennsylvanias Second Lady Gisele Fetterman paid them a virtual visit via Zoom.

Having immigrated to the United States from Brazil when she was seven years old, Fetterman is an activist for immigration reform and was an ideal guest in this class, HDFS 397: Latino/a Families, a special topics course addressing unique issues faced by Latino families in the US.

The goal is to expose students to the research we have specific to Latino populations, said Assistant Professor in HDFS Dr. Sarah Pierotti. Its vital because that population is growing, and a big part of our job in the HDFS major is to teach students to work with all members of the community and to help provide solutions to social issues for all members of the population.

The wife of Lieutenant-Governor John Fetterman, Gisele Fetterman has pursued her passion for helping others through endeavors such as founding the Free Store in Braddock, PA, a non-profit that provides low-income families with clothing, furniture, household items, baby care supplies, toys, and more. In 2015 she co-founded 412 Food Rescue providing food to families in need. The non-profit redistributed 2.5 million pounds of food in its first two years.

Fetterman continues to appeal to the United States Congress for immigration reform, inspired by her own early experiences as an immigrant. She shared many of these experiences with HDFS 397 students to help them better understand the issues they are studying related to Latino families, and the struggles these families go through as they begin lives in a new country.

I talk to so many folks who are against immigration, and I ask them, What would you do if your children were in danger? What would you do for them? Fetterman said.
She shared that dangerous conditions in her home of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil forced her mother to make a hard decision to relocate her young family. She said, The boiling point for my mother was when she was having dinner with my aunt. My aunt said she had only been robbed seven times that year. It wasnt the number that struck her, but the acceptance. She didnt want my brother and I to grow accepting that as normal.

With the safety of her children the top priority, Fettermans mother, a Ph.D. level nutritionist for hospitals in Rio, moved her family to Queens, New York. Unable to transfer her degrees in order to find similar employment in the US, she became a domestic worker.

She ran hospitals, had a great career, and immediately overnight shes now a domestic worker, cleaning hotels and homes, and she never looked back. She said she would clean toilets for the rest of her life knowing that were safe. Its not for everyone. Its not an easy path.

Fetterman herself struggled as a child to acclimate to life in the US. Speaking no English when she arrived in Queens, she attended public school, adapting to her new home by any means possible.

Mr. Rogers taught me English, Fetterman recalled. I watched him with Closed Captioning on, and I recommend him for anyone learning English his delivery, his speech is so great. Reading the words and hearing him say it really helped me learn.

Relating these personal accounts is one way in which Fetterman hopes to help close social divides and create understanding by helping people to realize the struggles others have endured. No one learns by being shamed, she said. Growth happens through conversation. You cant hate someone you dont know I cant accept that.

Pierotti said these messages will go far in helping her students to relate to the individuals theyll work with in their careers as social workers, counselors, behavioral specialists, and more. She was grateful that Fetterman was willing to make time for the class, recalling, It never hurts to send an email. I reached out and asked if she would be willing. She wrote right back and said she would be honored to.

Fetterman told the students, I think any work that helps make the world smaller is important, and thats some of what youre doing here.

Pierotti created the Latino/a Families HDFS course from scratch, and it is currently offered exclusively at Penn State DuBois. She is currently working on curriculum for a Latino Studies Minor that she hopes will be offered at other campus locations as well as DuBois.

On October 14, 2021, Tri-County Electric representatives came to Oswayo Valley Elementary School to discuss electricity safety and cautionary steps with our 4th grade students. They got to see and discuss personal protective equipment such as insulated gloves and boots, they were shown various examples of electric lines and how closely they resemble phone and cable lines, and were given a demonstration on what to do and what not to do if they are ever near or trapped by downed wires. The demonstration also included a diorama of some of the most common situations that often lead to accidental contact and injuries from electricity and electric lines.

1 comment: Think About ItMysterybyPastor B.J. Knefley
I believe that it can be safely said that most people like a good mystery. Whether its a good book or a movie, we sit on the edge of our seat waiting to see how its going to end. Some of us play the slick detective and try to figure out the clues so we can solve the who done it before the ending comes. Sometimes there are mysteries that just cant be solved. Oh, we try and we speculate, but in the end we really dont have a solid answer other than faith.
Take the Bible for example. Some believe that it was entirely written by men who invented God as a means to controlling people. Others believe that though men wrote it, it was done so under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Is it a mystery? Some would believe so, but thats what faith is about, isnt it?
In an interesting conversation recently my granddaughters husband shared with me that although he believed in God, he didnt believe in the Bible because man wrote it. Later I asked him if when showing a house that he built to potential costumers did he describe the house as the house he built or his subcontractors built? He quickly stated that his subcontractors built as he directed so it was the house that he built. You can probably guess where I was going to take this, but he caught on quickly and said, I get your point, I never thought about that way.
The word mystery is used several times in the Bible. There are things that just cant be explained or understood. Thats why we call it faith. Hebrews 11:1 simply states that Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Sadly, many want answers. They want perimeters and absolutes. They want things that are tangible. The mystery of faith can be all of that and more if wed only allow ourselves to delve into its mystery. Think about it.3 comments: Louisville Slugger is seeking three (3) full-time general worker positionsLouisville Slugger is seeking three (3) full-time general worker positions at our Larimer and Norton Timber Mill located at:LN Galeton91 West StGaleton, PA 16922.
