My ggg-grandparents were Isaac Farmer and Nancy Early of Southwestern Virginia. Nancy EARLY was born 17 Mar 1815 in Wythe Co VA, and died 7 Nov 1882 in Carroll Co VA. She was buried in North End Cemetery, Carroll Co VA. She married Isaac FARMER 8 Mar 1832 in Grayson Co VA, son of James FARMER and Susannah. He was born ABT 1808 in Grayson Co VA, and died 20 Nov 1890 in Carroll Co VA. He was buried in North End Cemetery, Carroll Co VA. Nancy Early Farmer's parents were John EARLY who was born circa 1787, and died 1819 in Carroll Co VA, the son of James Matten EARLY and Jane GATEWOOD Rhoda STEPHENS born circa 1810 in VA, daughter of Lawrence STEPHENS and Joanna HERBERT. She was born 10 Apr 1794 in Wythe Co VA, and died 1 Mar 1884 in Carroll Co VA. James Matten EARLY was born 1752/1762 in Westmoreland Co VA, and died 1807 in Botetourt Co VA. He married Jane GATEWOOD Jul 1780 in Albemarle Co VA. She was born 1758 in Albemarle Co VA.Her parents were thought to have been William Gatewood and Ann Ransom. Children of James Matten EARLY and Jane GATEWOOD were John EARLY (above), Mary Polly EARLY 1781- 1822,wife of Henry Marshall YOST, Jane EARLY who was born ABT 1793 and James EARLY Jr. James Matten Early built a log cabin for his family between the years of 1796 and 1798 in Botetourt County, Virginia in the present day town of Fincastle. Historic Fincastle, Inc received a grant from the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission in 1982, for the purpose of restoring the James Matten Early Cabin The restoration was completed in 1987 and is available to tour. The Cabin is part of a Home and Garden Tour and serves as a museum. The James Matten Early Cabin is furnished with period antiques from Fincastle and Botetourt Counties in VA.
