What's hot in the news around climate and sea ice and what are scientists talking about now? Read more... When scientists talk about the cryosphere, they mean the places on Earth where water is in its solid form, frozen into ice or snow. Read more ... The ELOKA program launches a new websiteData from collaborations with Indigenous communities in the Arctic are now easier to search and access. Read more... NSIDC manages and distributes scientific data, creates tools for data access, supports data users, performs scientific research, and educates the public about the cryosphere. 16 June 2020 Frozen in a drift: A MOSAiC story, part I NSIDC research Julienne Stroeve spent a winter in the Arctic for the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. Before she left, we sat down for a conversation about her research plans and expectations. 15 April 2020 The names they carry: The continued efforts of Yupik elders to pass down knowledge A school district in Alaska takes the reins of the Yup'ik Atlas, an online, interactive platform that archives Yup'ik places names and culture passed down from their elders. The Exchange of Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA), a NSIDC program, helps bring the atlas to life and continues to support communities in their ongoing efforts to thwart the loss of knowledge. 31 March 2020 From satellites to sea ice: a budding scientist’s journey to the Arctic Sean Horvath, a PhD student at the University of Colorado Boulder, gained Arctic research experience by taking part in the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) School. The school is affiliated with the MOSAiC expedition, a $150-million scientific research mission to study the Arctic climate system by freezing a German icebreaker into sea ice for a year.  24 March 2020 Arctic sea ice at maximum extent for 2020 Arctic sea ice has likely reached its maximum extent for the year, at 15.05 million square kilometers (5.81 million square miles) on March 5, 2020, according to scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado Boulder. The 2020 maximum is the eleventh lowest in the 42-year satellite record.  4 March 2020 Seeing sea ice: A new tool shows dynamic changes A new data visualization tool, the Sea Ice Analysis Tool, has just been added to the Arctic Sea Ice News Analysis (ASINA) website. The tool helps users customize sea ice extent and concentration data into graphs or maps based on their chosen criteria. 11 June 2020 Going, going, gone Snow-covered area and snow cover days in the Western United States were below average in May 2020... read more 2 June 2020 Holey ozone The seasonal decline of Arctic sea ice extent proceeded at a near-average pace in May.
