Wednesday, October 26th, 20115:54 pmInteresting rack question
Had a rack today of CDIOOT?. It makes 3 7s, all # only, and 7 8s, all OWL. Quite unusual. I wonder what the record for something like this is? (Comment on this)Sunday, September 11th, 20111:06 pmISC Follow up
Logged into ISC today to see a response to my query about reporting cheaters: You dont report cheaters. Gee, thanks. So if I call someone a shithead, I can get reported and lose chat privileges, but the only solution to cheaters is to no-play them. (Comment on this)Saturday, September 10th, 20114:18 pmAnyone up for designing a replacement for ISC?
Getting really sick of ISC lately. Was just playing a very exciting game against an unknown. With one tile in the bag, he made a play that killed most of the bingo lines and took an 80 point lead. When he drew the W out of the bag (meaning I could still bingo), he insta-disconnected before I could make my play. So even if the game is adjudicated, I dont get the win because he was technically ahead when he quit, even though the game was mine.

So I start a new game and start looking through the help files for how do report a cheating piece of scum. All the help files say to use REPORT for foul language only, not for allegations of cheating. Where does one report cheating? God only knows. So I go to ask an admin. Type in the question; get rejected because my quietplay variable is set incorrectly. Change that, try again. Nope, now Im not listening to channel 0. Christ. Cant possibly automatically change these settings when someone asks a question. Finally get the question through. Been waiting over ten minutes now, still no answer. Dont expect to ever get one. Also, Im supposed to get a premium membership for free as a member of the US WSC team, but emails about that go unanswered as well.

Id probably be willing to pay $100/ yr for a replacement for ISC that has responsive support, fewer stupid bugs, and deals quickly with cheaters. Oh, and when you put out a seek request and it gets answered, you should have to accept the acceptance within 30 seconds or something. Cant tell you how many times Ive accepted a game and then asked after a couple minutes You there? and then had to abort. (10 Comments |Comment on this)Saturday, September 3rd, 20118:20 amISC WTF?
Im pretty open about who I play on ISC. I give people the benefit of the doubt even if they have no identifying info in their profile. This occasionally leads to some WTF moments. Theres a guy Ive played twice who has opened both games by passing. I exchanged both times, and both times he instantly slapped down a 100 point bingo. Maybe he feels like giving me a sporting chance? Who knows.

Or take the latest three game session I played with a guy named osuns. Now, I want to be clear that Im not accusing osuns of cheating--quite the opposite. But Im just baffled how someone with his word knowledge (or lack thereof) can be a 1900 player. He opens the first game with DENKEST*, which I challenge off. DENK* isnt even a word, so Im not sure what hes thinking of, but whatever, we all have brain farts so I dont think much of it. Later, he tries DIVIDENT* as a 3x3, which also comes off, but its plausible looking so its not that strange that hed try it for so many points.

But in the next two games, his word knowledge just seems to fall to shit. He tries RETILEST* to a T. Now I know some people type the location of their moves, so I thought he might have meant to type something like Play RETILES 5G but instead typed 5H, or G5 instead, except theres nowhere on the board to play RETILES thats anywhere near where he put it. The next turn he has no problem finding one of his many legit bingos (ATELIERS). Finally, with 1 tile in the bag, the unseen tiles are ADEFOR??. And he has over two minutes, and cant find a bingo! FEDORAs is sitting there for the taking, even if the second blank is in the bag. How can you be a 1900 player and win 2 of 3 against me doing shit like this? Was he drunk this session? Or playing Call of Duty or something at the same time? So bizarre. (4 Comments |Comment on this)Sunday, August 7th, 201110:51 pmAt least I *knew* I'd screw it up...
A couple of months ago I was looking at a list of similar words and said to myself There's no way I'm ever going to keep straight which are ours, which are Collins, and which are good nowhere. And I proved it today by playing a # word against Polatnick, which he immediately challenged off. Here's the impossible list:

SCRAICH
SCRAIGH
SCRAUCH#
SCRAUGH#
SCREICH#
SCREIGH# (What I played)
SCRIECH#
SCRITCH#
SHRIECH#
SHRITCH#
SKREEGH
SKREIGH
SKRIECH#
SKRIEGH#

SCRIEGH*, SHREICH*, and SKREICH* are no good anywhere! I think only the JELLABA family is more confusing. (1 Comment |Comment on this)Tuesday, June 14th, 20111:28 pmSigns spotted in Albuquerque this weekend...
Billboard for a lawyer: Hurt? Call Bert! For those of you who aren't Breaking Bad fans, there's a sleazoid lawyer on the show whose slogan is Better Call Saul! Wonder which came first.

Texas Watermelons Blessed by Jesus Um, ok.

Congrat's

Either the most egregious use of the grocer's apostrophe ever, or a technically correct usage in which the ' stands for ulation, similar to the apostrophes in fo'c's'le. (2 Comments |Comment on this)Tuesday, May 10th, 20115:21 pmWord biz doesn't work on new laptop
When I download it the first time, it runs fine. Any subsequent attempts simple open the program and then immediately close it. If I reinstall, it works fine again. Any ideas? (4 Comments |Comment on this)Tuesday, April 19th, 201110:46 am Incredible play available here. See if you can find it!

Don't try to fight it.

BTW, why is it Michael Tang can announce four tournaments for 2012 and Mattel can't even give us a date or location for the WSC in 2011 yet? (9 Comments |Comment on this)Tuesday, February 22nd, 201110:35 pmPhoenix notes
This weekend in Phoenix I opened a game with DEBUD#. The next day, while talking to my girlfriend on the phone, she mentions that she has to debud her three baby goats. (It means to cauterize their horn buds so they don't grow horns). DISBUD is ours though.

I played some nice bingos, but most of them OWL: HAMULAR, CORNICED, and VENDIBLE in one game against Kevin Schutz; the natural BANKNOTE against Jim Lamerand, and the incredibly lucky JAILBIRD against Mark Kenas when he slotted me an L just where I needed it. Best # bingo was RIVERMEN against Ruth Hamilton, but even then I missed the slightly better MINEVER#.

Most incredibly, with better play I probably go 21-0. My one loss to Marty Gabriel was by 2 points--if I don't challenge SPINK# early on, it's an easy win. And I made a couple of moderate mistakes in my game against Kenas as well that cost me.

Crazy thought of the day--how about instead of having Collins divisions at tournaments, we just have Collins games? Any time two players agree to it, they can play using the Collins dictionary instead of OWL in any tournament. This is how Britain handled its OSW--Collins transition. Of course, I can see logistical headaches out the wazoo. But it's not like our current system is without problems. I mean, who won Phoenix this year--me or Conrad? Well, we Scrabblers are always odd. But more to the point, there are only 7 people registered for the Phoenix Collins division in 2 weeks. Any chance I can cajole one more entry to even us out? Note that despite the small size, there are 3 of us rated 1900, which makes us the de facto div 1. (10 Comments |Comment on this)Wednesday, January 26th, 201111:57 amFlashcards finished!
I'm largely akinestheticlearner, so when I started studying Collins seriously I decided to write out all the bingos by hand. Of course, keeping the OWL bingos fresh is important too, so I chose to flashcard all 73,070 bingos, from AARDVARK to ZYZZYVAS, 10 words per card, alphagrams on the blank side, words on the ruled side. This morning, I finally finished. Here's the picture of the finished work, approximately 7,000 index cards worth:

Now on to the 4s, 5s, 6s, and 9s! (9 Comments |Comment on this)Sunday, January 23rd, 201111:54 pmQuestion for Jews/ Hebrew speakers--SHLOSHIMS#
SHLOSHIM# is a perfectly cromulent* word meaning the period of thirty days' deep mourning after a death in Judaism. SHLOSHIMS#, on the other hand, draws a mere 10 Google hits, several of them Scrabble word lists. It seems like one of those absurd double plurals we sometimes get. At least CHERUBIMS and SERAPHIMS are attested to in the King James Bible, whereas SHLOSHIMS# seems straight out of the skull of a lazy lexicographer with no knowledge of Hebrew. However, SHLOSHIM does mean 30 days so I can kind of see how you could have multiple SHLOSHIMS. What's the deal--legit plural or word that should be on the deletion list? Sometimes I watch the duck play itself just to see what kind of cool things it comes up with. This recent game was the best I've seen in a long time, perhaps ever. Were it a real game, it would have set two records, obliterating one of them. (4 Comments |Comment on this)Wednesday, January 19th, 201112:27 amNorth Americans are a fearless bunch
Well, almost fearless. Heights, open spaces, closed spaces, computers, homosexuals, blacks, water, light, technology, furriners, and animals might scare us. But that's it. Nothing else. By contrast, people in the rest of the world are afraid of a lot of stuff: cats, spiders, depths, books, women, food, god, being buried alive. In fact, a total of 73 things more than in N.A. By far the most notable one has to be ARACHNOPHOBIA#, which I had to double check in the long word list just to be sure. Holy crap, how is that not good here? It was a hit movie! Of course, even winning an Academy Award doesn't guarantee that your common-word entitled film will be acceptable in OWL-land. Putting out feelers to see how much interest there is in a Collins tourney in either Tucson or Phoenix sometime this fall, in preparation for the WSC/ Causeway. Larry Rand is having a WGPO Collins event at the Grand Canyon on the weekend of November 12th, so something in September or October would probably be best. Phoenix is easier to get to, but if we do it in Tucson we can have it at my house and save some money by not having to pay for playing space. And hotels here are usually dirt cheap ($25-$40 a night for your standard Econolodge/ Motel 6 place). I'm not sure exactly how many people I can fit in my house, but probably 20 or so without a problem. Any interest? (6 Comments |Comment on this)Monday, January 17th, 20111:10 pm# four in the wild
Just posted by a friend of mine on facebook:
Off to Wellington tomorrow - anyone out there want to entertain a Jafa?

Howard Warner informs me that RONZER# is allegedly slang for kiwis who aren't JAFAS# but that no one he knows actually uses it. (For those of you who don't know already, see if you can figure out what JAFA and RONZER are acronyms for.) (4 Comments |Comment on this)9:18 amWin this endgame!

Not particularly tricky, but a subtle type of thing you usually don't think about is required. Once you find the sequence that *almost* makes it, finding the correct one should be easy. Collins knowledge is required. And yes, PISOLITE was a horrible play. Don't know how the hell I missed PETITION. (3 Comments |Comment on this)Sunday, January 16th, 20112:05 pmOdds of 8 bingo game
Incredible game by Jerry Lerman against Kenji. Brian Cappelletto just said to me on ISC that it's a lotto ticket type game, never to be repeated in his lifetime. Is that true?

The odds of playing a bingo on any given turn are about 1/7. So getting eight bingos in a 9 turn game is about 1 in 640,000. This is a very rough estimate. The odds are probably significantly lower, as each bingo removes bingo-prone tiles from the pool, and the odds of having a playable bingo drops as the board gets cluttered. But with ten turns, instead of nine, the odds drop to 1 in 128,000, and with eleven turns, it's better than 1 in 35,000. This means that somewhere in olaugh's database of millions of Q vs. Q games, there's probably an eight bingo one somewhere, even if we lower the true odds by an order of magnitude. Whether Brian should expect to see another such game in his lifetime depends mainly on just how optimistic my estimates are. (5 Comments |Comment on this)
