Description:

Forestry is an ideal path for those interested in managing, protecting and conserving renewable natural resources. Our students master the biological, physical and social sciences through hands-on learning, state-of-the-art equipment and access to 12 million acres of forests. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Forestry are required to select a concentration from the options below:As a professor of forest hydrology, Dr. Matthew McBroom teaches his students how to convert what they learn in the classroom into real-world solutions in the field. His students are able to apply their knowledge and solve challenges that affect forest habitat and wildlife. Watch the full story.Prior to winning a Nobel Prize for her role in authoring the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report, Dr. Virginia Burkett was a student pursuing a Ph.D. in forestry from SFA. Now, as chief scientist for climate and land use change for the U.S. Geological Survey, Burkett delivers scientific leadership for a number of USGS programs related to climate research. Dr. Virginia Burkett, chief scientist for climate and land use change, U.S. Geological SurveyVickie Mates has been a steward of our national parks for more than two decades and received a Master of Science in resource communications from SFA in 2006. As chief of interpretation and partnerships at Grand Teton National Park, Mates is tasked with directing the park division responsible for facilitating visitor connections to the ecological, historical, scientific, and cultural significance of a region that encompasses more than 10,000 years of human habitation. Vickie Mates, chief of interpretation and partnerships at Grand Teton National Park At SFA, we believe students benefit greatly from hands-on learning in and out of the classroom. Transformative experiences are at the core of our academic philosophy. Between their sophomore and junior year, forestry students are immersed in a rigorous six-week field station that provides hands-on experiences in wildlife sampling, timber inventory, surveying and mapping techniques. Internships are a core component of an agriculture student’s education. Many of these internships are paid and often result in post-graduate job offers. Students in The Wildlife Society, Society of American Foresters, National Association for Interpretation and Association for Fire Ecology attend national conferences that allow them to gain leadership skills and network with professionals. Undergraduate students work internationally to contribute to fire ecology research in the Netherlands thanks to Dr. Brian Oswald’s work to develop the country’s first quantitatively-based wildland fire risk assessment. Jake was named the 2019 Outstanding Student by the SFA Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society. He is currently working to establish a conservation leadership program for high school students. As a forestry graduate student, Josué is conducting comprehensive economic and feasibility analyses of conservation methods being implemented around the world that may be successfully applied in Costa Rica. Forest wildlife management student Julia Schmidt is president of Kappa Delta Chi, and she has been named to both the SFA Dean’s and President’s Lists. Julia hopes to work in conservation education programming. Sally Shroyer is a Texas Master Naturalist involved in multiple on-campus organizations. She has worked with Dr. Rebecca Kidd to study tree radial growth responses to climatic and hydrologic disturbances. Please fill out the form below to receive information from SFA.
