Description:

This study significantly changes the view of Venus from a mostly inactive planet to one whose interior is still churning and can feed many active volcanoes, one scientist said. On Venus, ring-like structures known as coronae dot the surface of the planet. They are thought to provide evidence of a warm interior for the planet, and for ongoing geologic activity. In the global map of Venus above, coronae determined to be active in the new study appear in red, and inactive coronae appear in white. Image via Anna J. P. Gülcher/ University of Maryland. Astronomer Guy Ottewell offers his insights and chart-making skills to you during this 2020 opposition of our solar system s golden and glorious planet of the rings, Saturn. The constellation boundaries are painted on an imaginary sphere of radius 11 astronomical units or AU (sun-Earth distances). Saturn’s mean distance from the Sun is 9.5 AU. The sightlines from Earth to Saturn are at the dates of opposition each year. Remember that the dates of Saturn's oposition are driven primarily by Earth's motino, in its smaller, faster orbit around the sun. Illustration via Guy Ottewell's blog. On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, 2 NASA astronauts will perform the 2nd in a pair of International Space Station (ISS) spacewalks, to finish a 3.5-year effort to upgrade the station’s power system. How to watch. Astronaut Chris Cassidy works during a spacewalk on July 16 to install lithium-ion batteries on the station. The orbiting lab was flying into an orbital sunrise at the time this photograph was taken. It s magnificent now, through binoculars, in the northwest each evening. Easiest to see from northerly latitudes. Coming into view from further south. Not visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Charts and more info here. Location of Comet NEOWISE just after sunset from July 20 to 26. Face northwest at dusk, avoiding trees or buildings to have a clear view of the northwest horizon. Sweep with your binoculars around the location for the comet marked on this chart. Some might barely see it with the naked eye. Observers at lower latitudes will see Comet NEOWISE lower in the sky, while it will appear higher for observers farther north. This comet is not visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Illustration by Eddie Irizarry using Stellarium. Astronomers have spotted a classical nova outburst in a type of variable star that involves a white dwarf orbiting a main sequence star. Nova Reticulum 2020 has been briefly visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Observations of the cosmic microwave background by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope in Chile suggest that the universe is 13.8 billion years old. Today is the anniversary of The Day the Earth Smiled, the 3rd-ever image of Earth from the outer solar system, taken by the great Cassini spacecraft on July 19, 2013. Via NASA/JPL/SSI/CICLOPS / Mother Jones New moons generally can t be seen. They cross the sky with the sun during the day. This month s new moon happens on July 20 at 17:32 UTC. Solar Orbiter s new views are the closest images of the sun taken so far. This mosaic is the 1st-light image from the SoloHI telescope. What you're seeing here is light scattered by electrons in the solar wind. In this view, the sun is to the right of the frame, its light is blocked by a series of baffles. The partial ellipse visible on the right is the zodiacal light - what we on Earth sometimes call the false dawn - created by sunlight reflecting off the dust particles that are orbiting the sun. Along the lower edge of the upper left tile, you can see a small dot: the planet Mercury. The colossal iceberg that split from Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf in July 2017 is now in the open waters of the South Atlantic, about 650 miles (1,050 km) from its birthplace. The best location to do that is at the precise gravitational center of the solar system. To find the largest, most massive black holes, find the exact center of gravity in the solar system. Scientists have now done that, to an accuracy of within 100 meters.
