Jam Tarts Recipe

Ingredients 140g flour, 20g caster sugar, 70g butter
1 egg yolk, 1 egg and jam (which ever type you like)

Method

Put the flour and sugar into a bowl. Add the chopped butter, and rub it in with your finger tips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Whip the yolk and egg together, and add to the flour mixture, mixing until it comes together. Do not over process. If the mix seems a little dry add a small splash of water.

Turn out onto a floured surface and form into a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for 10 minutes.

Heat the oven to 190°C (Gas Mark 5). Roll out the pastry to 3 4 mm. Choose a round cutter to suit the size of your bun tray, I like to use a scone cutter with a wavy edge. Grease the tin, and place a pastry round in each hole, pressing gently into place. Add a teaspoon of jam, being careful not to overfill.

Bake for 15 minutes until golden.

Top 10 Time Saving MummyGadgets

04/03/2012 Filed under working mum m always on the look out for smart gadgets that make juggling everything that little bit easier. Heres my top ten:

1. Hot Air Styling Brush
I have long red hair that can go a bit mad sometimes and this gadget amazingly makes me look nearly presentable in super quick time. I normally leave my hair to dry naturally and then when its 80% there finish it off with the brush.

2. Hair Epilator
I know youre thinking ouch! But compared to the time I would spend shaving theres no competition. Plus once you get used to it, the pain seems to lessen. I only use it for my legs and do it every few weeks, and that keeps me hair free.

3. Slow Cooker
As Im out at work all day its nice to come home and the meal be ready pretty much straight away. My wee boy always says hes hungry, so this saves the arguments of me saying he cant have a snack and then dear husband giving him one anyway.

4. Bread Machine
We got this as a wedding gift 7 years ago and I still use it regularly. Its great to put on a loaf, with some soup in the slow cooker and then head out for the morning without worrying about burning down the house. I also made jam at christmas time to give to the neighbours and it worked amazingly well.

5. Microwave
Not for microwave meals. Though sometimes if needs must. My biggest time and faff saving tip is to use it for steaming veg and part cooking things before you crisp them up in the oven. This works brilliantly for roast potatoes and baked potatoes. I also do famous honey parsnips this way. You can even boil an egg in a microwave in 20 seconds flat (with the little plastic gadget cups you can buy! Dont put a whole egg in the microwave!)

6. Dishwasher
I think for most people this has nearly become a necessity, and I am no different. What I really love is how it cleans big things like oven trays and even the racks from inside and on top of the hob. Oh and i sterilised my jam jars in it too. Even if you only have a tiny kitchen consider making space for a slimline or table top version.

7. Steam Cleaner
I have one of those hand held sharks. It is so good and I even use it for freshening up clothes and my wee boys stuffed toys. And no chemicals needed.

8. Handheld DustBuster
I have to confess I do have a cleaner who comes once a week. This for me is a necessity as I work fulltime and want my free time for fun stuff with the boys. Having a little DustBuster helps keep on top of any little spills in between times.

9. My iPod Touch
This has saved my sanity many times when trying the battle of wills over bedtimes. When doing super nanny to teach my wee boy to stay in bed i sneakily catch up on the news, it keeps my mind off it so I dont get cross with him and give up.

10. Online Grocery Shopping
Not really a gadget, but a top tip is order your regular shop online and get it delivered. No stressful supermarkets. No buying stuff not on the list and all together much quicker. Most companies save your favourites and have apps too (another thing to do on the iPod)!

Booster Blasters

27/02/2012 Filed under childrens craft booster blasters. The finished product looks amazing. All we did was cut out the cardboard shapes for the front, back and wings. These are held together with string to allow the wings to open and close. We taped on an old fabric belt for the shoulder straps, two little milkshake bottles for the jets and some lids for buttons. We paper mached the whole thing to give a good surface for painting and help hold everything together. Then painted white and silver and decorated with felt tip markers and a little star stamper.

My wee boy absolutely loves it!

Patchwork Update

12/02/2012 Filed under Sewing ve made a bit of progress with my patchwork hexagons. My little man goes to a gymnastics class on a Saturday and I can sit and sew the shapes together while hes occupied. I think its looking pretty good.

Patchwork Quilt

25/01/2012 Filed under Sewing ve started making a patchwork quilt.  Which I suspect might be one of these projects that will take a while and Ill have to try and keep motivated with.  Its the kind where you cut out paper templates and then cut out the fabric slightly larger.  The fabric is wrapped over the paper and you hand sew the shapes together.  Ive chosen little hexagons in a mix of colours.  So far Ive cut out all my templates and fabric, but only managed to join the first two together.

I think it will look really effective, but like I said is going to take ages!

Play Date

22/01/2012 Filed under Baking, Family Cooking re still in our PJs).  I have been super organised and put on a massive pot of soup in the slow cooker (should be plenty left over for freezing), theres bread baking in the bread maker.

Were off to our neighbours in a wee while to play, their son is the same age as ours.  So I wanted lunch to be ready to be tucked into when we got back.  I also made some muffins yesterday to take with us for a snack.  If I get time later I will add the recipe. I could also show you my super organised system for keeping recipe cut outs from magazines.  Well it keeps me organised anyway.

Oh would you believe weve finally got some snow today!  I bought a 44 in July last year, a small push along snow blower, new snow shovels and a grit bin for outside the house as the last few years have been so bad here in the North of Scotland, but so far all weve had is a dusting!!!!!!

I am a working mum to one wee boy, and wife to a crazy shetlander.

This blog is to be my outlet to record some of the things we do in our family life.  When I get any spare time I like to make things, nothing fancy, but Ill try and post pictures, etc, if you are interested.

For me everything I do has a practical edge (probably stems from being an engineer) and I always try to save time and money.  So the blog will also pass on some of this knowledge and tips.
