In December 2010, the PCAlaunched the LAMBS TO THE SLAUGHTER - WAIT FOR THE GREENpedestrian safety awareness campaign. The concept was developed around the behaviour of many pedestrians who oftenact like sheep when crossing the road, particularly at traffic lights. Many are either listening to iPods MP3 players, textingor using mobile phones. When one sheep walks the rest follow without stopping, looking and listening. The ad seeks to highlight the dangers of this potentially lethal behaviour and hopefully create significant behavioural change. Click here to view in high resolution.

DON'T BE A DEAD RINGER

In a hard hitting commercial, Volkswagen claims that: Mobile use is now the leading cause of death behind the wheel.

And the UK Transport Research Laboratory's survey found that: "Talking on a mobile phone while driving is more dangerous than being over the UK's legal alcohol limit - "drivers using mobile phones missed significantly more road warning signs than when drunk - Drivers who use their phones to send text messages were subject to the highest levels of physical and visual distraction."

NEVER LET A MATE WALK HOME DRUNK

The PCA launched the"NEVER LET A MATE WALK HOME DRUNK" Community Service Announcement, nationally, just before Christmas 2011.

Incredibly, over 20% of pedestrians who are killed on our roads have a BAC exceeding .15%. Most of these people were so inebriated, they were sleeping, playing, crawling, and falling onto the road when hit.

Clearly, people this inebriated will not be retaining any advertising or awareness messages, so the campaign encourages their mates to see they get home safely.

We're asking Councils across Australia to support this campaign by stencilling this logo in yellow on the footpaths outside pubs and clubs in their regions.

Don't Drive Drugged

October 2010: The Pedestrian Council of Australia released its "Don't Drive Drugged" Awareness Campaign. The Community Service Announcement (TV advertisement) was made by Saatchi and Saatchi in Sydney Australia. This followed a brief from the PCA which provided data from senior police in NSW and Victoria. This data revealed that during random roadside drug and alcohol testing, there were, on average, between 2.5 and 5 times as many motorists caught driving while affected by illicit drugs, than those exceeding the permitted prescribed concentration level of alcohol.

Infrastructure Summit should walk the talk

In 2005 Prince Charles said on 60 Minutes: "The whole of the 20th century has always put the car at the centre. So by putting the pedestrian first, you create these liveable places I think, with more attraction and interest and character ... liveability."
In the entire agenda for your Infrastructure Summit, I cannot see one mention of pedestrians, footpaths or walking as the primary transport mode, nor the infrastructure required to sustain and improve the nation's active transport.
At $3624 to attend, I doubt there will be many there representing the "walking class".
It looks more like a talkfest at the big end of town, promoting more bitumen and more cars faster.
