A beautifully illustrated work by the Australian ornithologist William Legge (1841-1918) on the birds of Ceylon (published between 1878 and 1880) was sold for € 4,200 (estimate € 1,800-2,200).A beautiful album with circa 50 photographs of Indonesia, compiled around 1900, was sold for € 1,500 (estimate € 200-300). In the section Old rare books a scarce Dutch atlas with 167 contemporary hand-colored engraved maps (published in Leyden around 1714 by the Dutch cartographer and printer Pieter van der Aa) was sold for € 15,000 (estimate € 7,000-9,000). A French botanical work published in 1820, illustrated with 52 hand-colored engravings of flowers, was also sold for € 15,000 (estimate € 3,000-5,000).A Dutch “Statenbijbel” published in 1664, with eighteenth-century silver clasps catches by the Rotterdam silversmith Cornelis van der Kaa, was sold for € 2,500 (estimate € 500-700). A lithograph by M.C. Escher published in 1950 was sold for € 2,500 (estimate € 2,000-3,000) and an etching by Rembrandt published in 1642 sold for € 2,200 (estimate € 1,500-2,500). A watercolor from 1906 by the German artist Andreas Carl Sommer (1864-1953), depicting a beautiful view of the “Lange Poten” in The Hague, was sold for € 1,100 (estimate € 300-500).An extremely rare engraving incorporating a world map, published around 1705 in Haarlem by the Dutch printmaker Ambrosius Schevenhuysen, was sold for € 11,000 (estimate € 7,000-9,000).On Wednesday 29th November Van Stockum’s Veilingen will be offering a collection of original drawings and prints by the German artists Max Slevogt (1868-1932) and Emil Orlik (1870-1932). This collection was formed by János Oscar Plesch (1878-1957), a well-known Jewish-Hungarian physician and cardiologist. He was a close friend of Albert Einstein, Emil Orlik and Max Slevogt.In 1923 Slevogt painted his portrait and in 1928 he painted a group-portrait of the Plesch-family (nowadays in the collection of the Jewish Museum in Berlin).In his autobiography “Janos, the Story of a Doctor” (London, Gollancz, 1948) Plesch provides first-hand information about these long-standing friendships.
