by BeanoFOR OPENERS: Looks like Phase I of Tennessee’s latest cluster should come to an end by this weekend. Then the ‘real” fun startsDO WHAT’S BEST FOR ALL INVOLVED With evidence -and not necessarily the NCAA violations kind- mounting daily that Jeremy Pruitt’s time as the Head Coach of our Tennessee Volunteers is coming to a close it’s time to bring an end to all the cloak and dagger nonsense and let everyone move on with their lives. The longer Tennessee continues to dig into its own dirty laundry the greater the likelihood they damage the program worse than they would leaving it under the direction of a coach most have long-since deemed incapable. The only things that can come from extending the pressurized bargaining shenanigans are uncovering major violations leading to crippling sanctions, increased bleeding of an already weakened roster, diminishing the attractiveness of the opportunity for recruits and prospective coaches, or all of the above.Jeremy Pruitt hasn’t earned the right to continue as Tennessee’s Head Coach but he also doesn’t deserve for his reputation to be damaged beyond repair. He wasn’t ready for the job -and may never possess the tools necessary to lead his own program- but he did accept the challenge when offered and has worked tirelessly toward the goal that both he and Tennessee fans covet of making the program relevant again....[more]by Tony BasilioHappy Fire This Guy Thursday:Today Is The Day But Is It THE DAY? Today is the day Tennessee meets with Jeremy Pruitt for the first time since the season ended. The dynamics of all this is very interesting. The belief of people I talk to is that Tennessee and Pruitt are heading for a separation. The real question is what will the divorce look like and when will this come down. Here are a couple of questions to consider as we ponder this historical day.1) Will this be the first and only interview? There's a chance Tennessee could have to sit down with Pruitt more than once if they can't get all their questions answered satisfactorily. In fact I was told last night by a source that Tennessee is almost expecting that this could drag out over a few days once the questions start flying....[more]by Tony BasilioAs The World Turns Wednesday: We continue to track this soap opera we call Tennessee Football from every angle possible.Get the app! From there the way this probably plays out is that Tennessee is more than likely to part ways with Pruitt within 24-36 hours of this interview. Our best guess here is that it's done on Friday or Saturday ... Again this is only a guess. Because we're dealing with Tennessee here ... And at Tennessee anything is possible. Could Tennessee Bring Back Pruitt...[more]by Tony BasilioWelcome to moving week Monday ...It's time for Tennessee to move ... The Titans moved yesterday. Good to be back and I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2021.THINK I’LL JUST CHILL AND ENJOY: As I agonized through the Vols Wednesday basketball victory over Arkansas I finally took a brief timeout and asked myself "what the hell are you doing?” I came to the realization I was turning something fun into something miserable. It’s my shortcoming and one of my many flaws. I’m guilty of it in my softball playing and in following most all of my favorite sports teams. With the 2021 BasketVols I’ve put the cart waaaaay ahead of the horse....[more]by Tony BasilioThursday!!!!Noted college football and NFL expert Mike Detillier joined your Tony Basilio Show yesterday and I took the opportunity to get Mike's thoughts on some names that will probably make Tennessee's short list.Detillier On Bill O'Brien: 'Good fit in Northeast. Does he connect with young players? I've heard from various agents that he has trouble connecting with young athletes. I've heard this from multiple people. We went through that at LSU with Coach Miles. I think Penn State is a better fit.'...[more]by Tony BasilioTennessee Arkansas As The World Turns WednesdayLots of news came out of Tennessee's moribund football program yesterday. Let's dive right in.Jeremy Pruitt Is growing more aggravated and agitated according to sources around UT's football program.Pruitt is blaming Bryce Thompson's unexpected departure to the NFL on this situation.Pruitt also believes this is killing him in the transfer market.Though he's trying to put a happy face on this Pruitt knows now that ...1) He's at risk is his job ......[more]by Tony BasilioWelcome To Tuesday ... As The World Turns Continues: with the Tennessee Football situation. Therefore it seems apropos to use this space today to empty my bucket on what I believe with regards to what's transpiring on The Hill around this investigation. It's the craziest day in the NFL and Black Monday came early over the weekend for Tom Herman at Texas and a few other spots in the NFL. With The Titans a division champion the first time since 2008 one has to wonder if the Vols will be heard from this week in this stew of insanity. Our UT Insider's Insider Orange Throat is up first today with a tale of lots of moving parts. Thinking Fan Nation:Random musings as we wonder if this is the week we learn the fate of Jeremy Pruitt as the HC at Tennessee:PRUITT'S LIMBO HITS DAY 16 ... Yes, it has been 16 days since Trey Wallace broke the story that UT was conducting a significant internal investigation into its football program, a story UT did not confirm but more importantly did not deny. Since then, the only public statement coming out has been A.D. Fulmer's Liberty Bowl announcement, indicating it would be a good headstart for Coach Pruitt and the Vols on getting ready for 2021....[more]by Tony BasilioHappy New Year ...We never quit working here at Tonybasilio.com. As far as I'm concerned we're back for the crown....[more]by Tony Basilio Merry Christmas Wednesday ... On The Football Front: All's Quiet On The Hill: Well not exactly but the thunderous boom we've all been waiting for hasn't occurred yet. When/If it does remains to be seen. Nothing that's occurred in the time since we've last been together has me believing Jeremy Pruitt is any closer to returning as UT's coach.Chaos In The Building: Many coaches have left Tennessee for Christmas break while others are out with Covid-19. And some are getting ready to leave altogether....[more]by Tony BasilioBowl Cancellation Tuesday That's A Wrap: Thank goodness the Vols season is mercifully over after a recent 'Covid outbreak' around Tennessee's coaching staff. I think I speak for many Vol fans in saying that it's time to get onto the real task around the program which is figuring out how to clean up the mess around the football program. The cynic in me can't help but wonder if Tennessee is using 'the virus' as a pretext to shut it down and maybe bring the Pruitt era to a merciful end. The schemer in me wonders if the UT powers that be wanted the Vols out of a bowl game just to keep the waters cleaner if/when a change needs to be made.Jeremy Pruitt is 3-7 this season ... Nuff said. Why mess with perfection when you're looking to possibly blast a coach...[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: Nobody does bizarre like the Tennessee Football Program. Nobody!HOW (OR WHEN) DOES IT END HERE FOR PRUITT? Sitting in the North End Zone of Neyland Stadium Saturday my buddy Jeff showed me an article his sister had forwarded about an internal investigation The University of Tennessee was conducting into its football program for alleged recruiting violations authored by Fox Sports Knoxville’s Trey Wallace. My years on the radio have been exhilarating but have also raised my level of skepticism and curiosity on any breaking news concerning Tennessee Athletics as to timing and any sinister motive hidden within. I’m almost ashamed to say that I’m less trusting and more jaded than I desire to be. My first thought was the machine was moving on embattled Vol Coach Jeremy Pruitt and arming themselves with ammunition to pay only a portion of his contractual buyout....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: I hoped to never get back to the point in my Vol fandom where it was all about the coach. Unfortunately, here I am again.WHAT VOLS MUST DO VERSUS A&MPROTECT OUR QBs This will easily be the greatest challenge that our young QBs have faced since wrestling control of the position out of Jarrett Guarantano’s iron grasp. Florida does not possess the stingy, physical, aggressive defense we are accustomed to seeing from the Gators and Vandy fielded no better than an average JUCO unit. A&M’s defense is the real deal. They are 2nd in the SEC in rush defense (100.8 ypg), 3rd in pass defense (229 ypg), and 3rd in scoring defense (22 ppg)....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: I have a lot of respect for the kids on both sides of the Tennessee-Vandy game. All have been given ample reason to say “to heck with this” by almost everyone involved but have persevered. Thanks guys.VANDY TAKEAWAYS:BLOGGER’S DISCLAIMER: I realize everything I write below is tempered by the fact Vandy played with what amounted to a middling FCS program roster. But let’s just do our best Phillip Fulmer and Jeremy Pruitt imitation and pretend they didn’t....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: Not sure how to preview a game that may not happen and our opponent is unsure who they’ll put on the field if it does. So, let’s do one last (I almost promise) Tennessee Football/Jeremy Pruitt rant instead.IT’S NO LONGER IMPORTANT TO WIN BIG AT TENNESSEE: Winning is important at Tennessee; for its undying, long-suffering, longer-underserved fan base. But not to those in power getting rich off of Big Orange Nation’s passion. As long as enough seats are sold and donations continue to flow in everything else takes a back seat. Hell, you barely have to register a heartbeat to share in the vast TV riches the league soaks up, just ask this week’s opponent Vanderbilt....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: It wasn’t the bloodthirsty Gators we’re used to seeing but the results were the sameFLORIDA TAKEAWAYS:-Florida was actually primed for an upset if the Vols had enough team and leadership to pull it off. The Gators dropped passes, allowed more pressure on Kyle Trask than normal, messed around with a running game that was obviously ineffective and lacked their normal juice we’ve become accustomed to seeing them play with in this rivalry. They also punted several times on 4th and short in plus territory which they rarely do. They now treat us as if we’re Kentucky or Vandy....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: Okay, it’s time. When you are granted the opportunities I’ve had to express a generally uninformed but passionate viewpoint on the air you’re bound to have some horrendous takes. Being lukewarm on Dan Mullen getting our job after the firing of Butch Jones was an egregious one. With the Gators coming in off of two double-digit win seasons under Mullen -headed for a third- and about to trounce our bohunkus for the third consecutive time, I’ll just have to own that one. NOW, leave me alone Tony, Throaty and TGMDAND NOW TO OUR COACH: The news of Kivon Bennett’s arrest on drug and weapons charges is the latest in a string of embarrassments for the University of Tennessee’s football program and embattled head coach Jeremy Pruitt. I know that coaches shouldn’t be held accountable for poor decisions made by a few young men under their tutelage -especially those they inherited- but the truth is even those who care little about whether the Vols ever win another football game do care about law breakers brought on campus for the express reason of being good on the football field....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: In honor of our beloved football program I think I’ll write half-a-blogAUBURN TAKEAWAYS:Jarrett Guarantano -like the Vols- had a good first half (15-21, 156 yds) until the last drive when he decided it was better to take a give-up sack to run the clock out instead of throwing it downfield to at least give us a chance to score going into the locker room.Once again JG turned the game completely in our opponent’s favor with yet another pick-6 on the Vols first possession of the second half after driving the ball the length of the field. He was 0-2 passing in the second half and that was one pass too many....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: It’s truly a shame when your administration can’t be trusted to accurately evaluate the progression of a football team and makes a fanbase question if winning a game is in the program’s best interest.WHAT VOLS MUST DO VERSUS AUBURNWIN THIRD DOWN Tennessee is last in the SEC in 3rd-down conversions this season moving the sticks at an abysmal 27.4% clip. Auburn on the other hand is successful on close to half of their conversion opportunities at 49.4%. The Vols need to flip the script if they are to be successful on The Plains on Saturday....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Tennessee Football team that isn’t good at any phase of the game. I have now.THE TIME IS NOW: As the great John Ward once said it’s time. It’s time for us to do something un-Tennessee in order to become Tennessee again. Jeremy Pruitt will not get us there. Whether he’s here four more games or four more years he’s not the answer. The job is too big and his competence too small....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: This Saturday has all the earmarks of a fork-in-the-road game for the Jeremy Pruitt era at Tennessee.WHAT VOLS MUST DO THE REST OF THE WAYGET TOP-SHELF O-LINE PLAY: Most of the angry discussion of the last several weeks has understandably centered around Jarrett Guarantano’s continued failed effort to play QB at a winning level. More on that below but my biggest disappointment has been the lackluster play of an offensive line touted to be among the best in the SEC if not the nation. They’ve been anything but. This after getting a boost from Cade Mays being granted almost-immediate eligibility to bolster what was already a supposedly star-studded cast. The young tackles have underperformed and don’t appear to have developed at an acceptable rate....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: Though I didn’t expect a victory I was hopeful the Vols performance against the Tide would provide hope for the remaining contests as last year’s trip to Tuscaloosa did. Not even close.ALABAMA TAKEAWAYS:-Jarrett Guarantano (13-24; 162 yds; 2 TDs; 0 Ints) was not the issue Saturday. He threw the deep ball well and even made a couple of runs for first downs....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: A lot of red flags have come into focus over the last several weeks concerning Jeremy Pruitt and his chances to be a long-term answer as the Vols Head Coach. I hope the rest of the season alleviates my worries rather than intensifying them.WHAT VOLS MUST DO vs BAMAMOVE ON FROM GUARANTANO…FOR GOOD: Jarrett Guarantano -through no fault of his own- has long since become an anchor tied to our program’s neck. It is painfully obvious to anyone watching that EVERYONE in Tennessee’s camp -with the possible exception of his head coach- has zero belief in JG except that he is sure to make 2 or 3 devastating plays in every big game that gives you no chance to win. It’s time to move on and never go back before the whole roster drowns....[more]by BeanoON MY MONDAY MINDFOR OPENERS: THAT was quite simply an awful, embarrassing, inexcusable performance.JEREMY PRUITT QUICKLY LOSING GROUND (WITH THE FANS)I like Jeremy Pruitt. Not sure I believe in him but I like him. I think that’s the way most feel. He’s got an everyman quality about him -in a profession where that’s rare- that’s endearing. He’s not living off a famous last name or a carnival-barking, pitchman....[more]by BeanoFREE THOUGHT FRIDAYFOR OPENERS: I’m as over the Jarrett Guarantano run as anyone alive but Kentucky was the one game last year, we wouldn’t have won without him.WHAT VOLS MUST DO vs KENTUCKYNEVER LET THEM BELIEVE Kentucky has won only two games in the series since their last victory in Knoxville which occurred in 1984. The current Cats roster is certainly not guilty of most of the past failures but you can believe they know and feel the history of the series. The Vols should keep the game in front of them and play with a confidence level befitting of a team that’s won 33 of the last 35KEEP GUARANTANO COMFORTABLE Kentucky has a solid defense (#3 in SEC in Scoring D 24.3 ppg; 3rd in Rushing D 83.3 ypg; #4 Total D 359.3 YPG) but they haven’t shown the propensity to pressure QBs with only 5 sacks on their opponents 126 pass attempts on the season....[more]FISH Hospitality Pantries (a.k.a.
