Description:

It's time for another season of Premature Playoff Predictions. Much has changed about Oregon high school football in the past year, but I got my spreadsheets adjusted, and (assuming I didn't make any typos) I'm ready to start guessing at what will happen.Game predictions are based on the Freeman rankings found on calpreps.com. Historically, that site is about 90% accurate when predicting winners and losers, and that's good enough for me. As a side note, I'm doing these projections based strictly on overall rankings on that site and not the individual game projections available there.Qualification rules for all classifications can be found at theOSAA website.I'm not going to bore you with the numbers my spreadsheet puts out. If you would like a copy of the spreadsheet (it's a .xlsx file), you can email me at jdrumm1 at Comcast.net. I'll include instructions on how to do your own what-if scenarios.Let's look at a league-by-league breakdown of what the rankings say is going to happen (just 4A this week). The teams are ranked, with their projected records. Automatic qualifiers are followed by a *.Read more: 2018 Premature Playoff Predictions, Week 4 2 comments What is Football without a great rival? One of the best ever is back in Northern Marion County! Photo Brent DeLaPaz Woodburn Independent Fall 1986- Pictured Woodburns Kit Cummings, and North Marions Kevin Pearson. Two good friends, who simply wore different uniforms. The Woodburn/ North Marion rivalry, is one that stretches back into the early 1950’s when The NM School District came into being. I have witnessed a ton of this great sport since the 1970’s and I am here to tell you, this rivalry was second to none in The Willamette Valley, until it dissolved in the 1990’s.It was resurrected once again in 2006, when North Marion pounded out four wins in a row against The Bulldogs, finishing the streak in 2009 with a 32-0 win at Woodburn. As far as I can remember, the last time Woodburn would have had a win in the series, would have been the Cory Sonnen led Bulldog teams of the early 1990’s. That win for NM in 2009, would be the last time these two great rivals would go at each other on the field.Read more: NM/Woodburn- It's Back! Add new comment Turner - In a non-conference matchup of one-time Capital Conference foes who have more than a little history between them, 5A La Salle out-scored 4A Cascade 41-30 in a game that had more twists and turns, and strange plays and calls, than one often sees in an entire month of football.Cascade opened the game with a 65 yard drive, capped by Ethan Coffey's 1 yard touchdown run, but had an apparently successful 2 point conversion run from an odd bunch left formation negated because they had only 10 players on the field.La Salle quarterback Ethan Edgerly quickly answered, with a 40 yard touchdown pass to James Menor, and shortly thereafter with a 52 yard run that set up a 20 yard touchdown toss to Casey Green to put the Falcons up 14-6 as the first quarter wound down.Read more: La Salle Outdistances Cascade Add new comment Santiam had an amazing season in 2017, making a run all the way to the 2A State Finals after finishing as the runner-up in the very tough Tri-River League. Tonight they opened with a former league foe The Regis Rams on the road, and it was all Santiam in the 52-6 win out in Stayton. Both teams had some miscues and penalties along with some stout defense, that saw the first quarter end with no score on the board. Santiam finally put together a solid drive in the second quarter that ended with Junior RB Brody Davidson punched in the first score for The Wolverines 2018 season from 4 yards out at the 9:04 mark. The two point conversion would fail. Santiam 6 Regis 0The Wolverines are very solid in the backfield returning the two work horses from last year in Davidson and fellow Junior Trevor Tinney, and Tinney was the next to make his mark, scoring after a very strong run up the left sideline with 6:23 left in the first half. The PAT once again would fail, but Santiam was starting to roll on both sides of the ball, while their defense was all over The Ram offense and Senior QB Kirkland Scott. Tinney was running so hard, you swore the kid was in two different jerseys for most of the first half ;)Read more: Santiam Rolls In Opener VS Familiar Foe Add new comment BEAVERTON - Most of the top prep athletes in Oregon will converge on the Nike World Headquarters for the Oregon Sports Awards ceremony in the Tiger Woods Center on Wednesday, June 20. Comcast (CSNW) will be televising the event and Rip City Radio (620 AM) will be on the air, beginning at 7 p.m.Some of the big names on the list of finalists this year include a who’s who Oregon’s best athletes.Portland Trail Blazer guard Damian Lillard, Oregon State baseball players Nick Madrigal and Adley Rutschman, Olympic Gold Medal winner Ryan Crouser, New York City Marathon champ Shalane Flanagan, Western Oregon U. and Enterprise HS legend David Ribich and the University of Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu.Oregon State's baseball players will certainly be busy this year (playing in the CWS in Omaha) and most years the biggest name pro's skip the event, but that is fine because the night belongs to the amateurs.High School kids and small college students from all corners of Oregon get to dress up and experience a real-life ESPY like awards show that has been hosted by Sportscenter anchor and Oregon grad Neil Everett on multiple occasions.Benson’s Micah Williams, fresh off a fourth-place finish in the 100-meters at USA Junior National Track and Field Championships, is a finalist for Prep Track Athlete of the Year and the Johnny Carpenter Award as the top overall prep athlete. Williams time of 10.37 at Junior Nationals ranks 2nd in state history behind Aloha legend Thomas Tyner’s 10.33. Williams will be a junior next year at Benson.Sunset high school senior Kelly Makin is the only athlete that made it as a finalist in three categories; Prep Cross Country Runner of the Year, Prep Track Athlete of the Year and the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year Award (6A-5A). Makin recently won the 800-meter and 1,500-meter titles for the 2nd consecutive year at the 6A state track and field championships.A short history of the Oregon Sports Awards from their website“For more than 60 years, the OSA have honored outstanding achievements by Oregon preps, collegians, amateurs, pros, teams and coaches, as today’s standouts grab a piece of our state’s rich sports history and share it with yesterday’s stars. In 1948, the Oregon Sports Writers and Sportscasters’ Association birthed the Bill Hayward Banquet of Champions. The event was a sit down affair, honoring the greats of Oregon sports. In 1986, the event was renamed the Oregonian Banquet of Champions and in 2001, was rebranded as the Oregon Sports Awards presented by Nike. The event is an ESPYs-style stage production hosted in the Stanford Theatre at the Nike World Headquarters and is one of the best nights of the year in Oregon sports for athletes, fans, partners, and community supporters.Past award winners have included the likes of Terry Baker, Dick Fosbury, Steve Prefontaine, Joni Huntley, Neil Lomax, Danny Ainge, Dan O’Brien, Gary Payton, Tiffeny Milbrett, Joey Harrington, Nick Symmonds, Jordan Kent, Kevin Love, Liz Brenner, Megan Rapinoe, Ashton Eaton and Marcus Mariota.”TICKETSOREGON SPORTS AWARDSKeep reading for a list of finalists in every category.Read more: Oregon Sports Awards EUGENE – A beautiful Oregon spring day in the Willamette Valley greeted the world's besttrack athletes and they responded by producingworldleading times across the board at the 44thPrefontaine Classicat historic Hayward Field in front of 12,667. In what was the last Pre-Classic at Hayward Field before a demolition and new stadium is built in its place,Oregon born RyanCrouserwon the MariaMutola Award as the meet's Outstanding Athlete by breaking his own Hayward Field and Prefontaine Classic record in the shot put with a whopping 73-11 throw. Crouser said his warmup was the key to his success today.“I warmed up really well, now I just have to get to the transition between meet and warmups," said Crouser. "I’m not traditionally a warmup guy, but today I warmed uppretty big. Once I get used to throwing hard again, andcomeptingagain, I’m really excited because there is still a lot more potential there to improve.”Other American record holders joined Crouser in winningtheir respective field events.Christian Taylorleaped 58-2 to win the Triple Jump. "I really wanted to go out with a bang as far asthe final result," said Taylor. "I was happy with the win, but I really wanted a big, big send off. This place, you know, the grandstands, the energy is unlike anyplace else in the world. They really get behind the jumps, they know track and field here. Whether it’s World Juniors, whether it’s the Olympic Trials, it’s really Tracktown USA, but I think it’s even bigger than that. This is a very special place in my heart."Jenn Suhrmade 15-11 in the pole vault and beat New Zealand's Eliza McCartney on fewer misses.“I’ve always liked coming to Eugene, and I think this meet was really important to me because the last time I was here was in 2010," said Suhr. "I haven’t done a Diamond League in three years, and they’re renovating thestadiumso it was the last time it was going to look like this, and I just wanted good memories. I’ve had great memories here before, and I just wanted one last one.”There were someoutstanding performances on the track too, all world-leading times. "Going into the last 300 I was just like ‘try to switch gears every 100 meters,’ and I feltreally goodat that point. I was just hoping it would be enough to be able to catch them, and it was."Ethiopia'sGenzebeDibabawas relentless in the women's 5,000-meters, breaking everybody on her way toanconvincing win in 14:26.89.Men's International Mile:The pack stayed back from the pace-setters, but still ran fast as 12 men broke 4-minutes.Former Southern Oregon runner Eric Avilatook the lead with 300-meters remaining and made it an all-out sprintto the finish.20-year-oldproDrew Huntermade his move with 200-meters left and finally got by Avila at the110-metermark to take a clear lead entering the homestretch. Crouser and all of the former Ducks will be treated as if they are family to the Hayward Field faithful, as will anybody who performs magnificently.RJ Barrett scores game-high 20 points for World TeamPORTLAND - A dominating performance by the World Team in the fourth quarter overshadowed a great game by Oregon-bound center Bol Bol for Team USA, as the World Team won for the 7th time ever in the 21st Nike Hoop Summit at the Moda Center, 89-76.Consensus No. 1-ranked recruit R.J. Barrett, left, showed he was the best player in the building, leading the World Team with a game-high 20 points, to go along with 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Class of 2019 Charles Bassey (13 points, 16 rebounds) and Wake Forest-bound Jaylen Hoard (11 points, 15 rebounds) got easy baskets and controlled the boards for the World Team. France's Jaylen Hoard, #8, battles with Team USA's Bol Bol, #9. Photo by Sam Forencich/USA Basketball.Team USA went into the final quarter ahead 64-61, but Argentina's Leandro Bolmaro drilled two quick 3-pointers from the left corner and Florida-bound point guard Andrew Nembhard added four points as the World Team jumped ahead 71-68. They weren’t done. The Duke-bound Barrett got a steal for a monster breakaway dunk, leading the World Team on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes. Hoard, Bassey and Jamaica's Kofi Cockburn all had dunks during the run and Team USA had no answer.“Our bench was tremendous,” said World Team head coach Roy Rana. “They shared the ball and came together well. The willingness to share the ball defined this team. It’s a real great sign that these guys were able to do that. The professionalism that these young kids showed was amazing.”Both Barrett and Hoard felt that the week of practices prepared them well for tonights game. “We tried to transfer what we did at practice to the game and we did that,” said Hoard. “We kept the same intensity from practice and brought it to the game,” added Barrett. They were all impressed with young Charles Bassey, one of the top rated players in the class of 2019. “He was a key part of the victory,” said Hoard. “He came in and grabbed 17 rebounds,” said Barrett. “That was a key to limiting their second shots.” “It is tremendously exciting for a player that young,” added Rana.Bol Bol had an impressive performance for Team USA, making rebounding look easy, blocking shots at will and showing a variety of moves on offense. Bol finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks. Vanderbilt-bound Darius Garland led Team USA with 16 points and 5 assists, making 4 of 7 3-pointers. Kansas-bound Quentin Grimes added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The World Team won the rebounding battle 60-42, including a 21-8 advantage on the offensive glass. The World Team also won the battles for points in the paint 60-46, points off turnovers 19-7 and fast break points 22-9. Neither team shot well from behind the 3-point arc. Led by dynamic talents Cameron Reddish and Darius Bazley, Team USA is filled with blue-chip recruits headed to elite major college programs, including Bol Bol, left, headed to the University of Oregon. The Nike Hoop Summit is the premier All-Star game in the world for age 19 and under basketball players as the last eight No. 1 overall NBA draft picks played in the Hoop Summit. You can see the game live on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.Although Duke recruit Zion Williamson is sitting out with a cast on his right hand, two of his future Blue Devil teammates will try to help Team USA to it’s 15th victory in the series. Reddish, a 6-foot-7 forward, is a versatile and dynamic scorer and Tre Jones, a 6’2 point guard, is a carbon copy of his older brother Tyus, who helped lead Duke to the 2015 NCAA Championship. Reddish was the most impressive player on Team USA during scrimmages on day one of practice, showing strong ball handling, passing, shooting and finishing skills.Bazley, a 6’9 forward from Cincinnati, Ohio, looked like he was headed to Syracuse for college, but has decided to sign with the G-league for one season before making himself eligible for the NBA draft in 2019. This is Bazley’s first trip to Portland and he’s just soaking everything in.“Now that I’m here, I’m embracing the moment,” said Bazley. “It’s really great to be with these guys one last time to be able to compete against some of the best players from around the world, not just the USA.”Bazley believes that Team USA’s familiarity with each other will bring success in tomorrow’s game. “We have all played with each other, so it’s been easy,” said Bazley, of his team coming together. “No one is really looking out for themselves, everyone just wants to get the win.” How important is the win?“Very important,” said Bazley. “I didn’t fly four hours and do all this preparation to lose a game. I’m gonna be really upset if we lose. That’s the biggest reason I came out here, to get this win for the USA. That is everybody’s mindset.”Louis King (6’8 Forward, Oregon) and Romeo Langford (6’5 Guard, Undecided) are also sitting out for Team USA due to injuries. King is dealing with a torn ACL and Langford must sit out due to concussion protocol. Keldon Johnson (6’7 Forward, Kentucky) who was limited in practice on Wednesday night, shooting on his own, but not participating in team drills, is also sitting out. DeMatha Catholic High School (Md.) head coach Mike Jones was selected head coach of the 2018 USA team for the Nike Hoop Summit. Both Team USA and the World Team held their final practices on Thursday evening in from of a packed house at the Trail Blazers Practice Facility. The World Team started out sloppy during their scrimmage, but got rolling as the game went along. Andrew Nembhard and Jaylen Hoard were standouts again, while new addition Kofi Cockburn (6’10, 289, Christ the King HS, NY - Jamaica) was hard to miss with his massive frame. Team USA faced off against a team of local college/high school players including; Lake Oswego HS Calvin Hermanson, Jefferson HS Tyrone White, Grant HS Bryce Canda, Oregon State Beaver Tres Tinkle, Rainier Beach HS and USC-bound Kevin Porter, University of Portland Philipp Hartwitch and D’Marques Tyson, Portland State Brandon Hollins, Central HS and Western Oregon University Tanner Omlid, and Jaden McDaniels, an unsigned senior at Federal Way HS (Wash.).Keep reading for profiles on all of Team USA’s playersRead more: Team USA looks to overcome injuries at 21st Nike Hoop Summit Add new comment Football: Central Catholic 49 Lake Oswego 28 - Final Football: Lake Oswego 28 Jesuit 21 - Final Football: Central Catholic 35 Barlow 7 - Final Football: Thurston 14 Crater 10 - Final Football: La Grande 21 Banks 0 - Final Football: Santiam Christian 41 Hidden Valley 34 - Final Football: Heppner 12 Kennedy 7 - Final Football: Adrian 38 St Paul 32 - Final Football: Banks 56 Marist Catholic 31 - Final Football: La Grande 68 The Dalles 0 - Final
