►For several decades, this newspaper has pushed for governments to pay extra to workers who are frequently asked to use their foreign-language skills to communicate with customers.
These workers are often taken away from their own work to translate and this double duty often goes unrewarded. We are glad to see that under Cindy Stuart’s leadership, the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office will now reward its bilingual employees with extra pay. The clerk’s office says it services more than 45,000 Hispanic customers who need translation and interpretation support. (to read more, buy a paper)

► We asked for Hillsborough County government’s employee data by race and ethnicity. Blacks are well represented in County government in most categories. The employment percentage for Blacks matches or surpasses their population percentage of 18 percent. In the categories where Blacks fall short, it is not by a large percentage except in protective services.
Hispanic numbers are far worse, falling way short of 29.7 percent of Hillsborough County’s population of Hispanics.
Here are the numbers: (to read more, buy a paper)

►There will be a press conference hosted by the Puerto Rico Statehood Network and Puerto Ricans in Hillsborough County on Nov. 9, at 1:00 p.m., at the Cuban Club regarding the hearing of U.S. v. Vaello-Madero by the U.S. Supreme Court. Many do not realize that the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program extends to the 50 states and the Northern Mariana Islands but not Puerto Rico. ► The Italian Club will celebrate its Paolo Longo Award Gala on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. This year, the award is going to two outstanding recipients, Laura Alessi DeLucia with Vigo Importing and Richard Gonzmart of Columbia Restaurant fame, for their work to preserve Italian culture, traditions and heritage.
The price is $150 per person and includes passed appetizers, a three-course plated meal, open bar, music and dancing. If you’d like to attend, call the Italian Club at 813-248-3316. (to read more, buy a paper)

► Have you seen the large banners on Blake High School that celebrate Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup wins? They can be seen easily from I-275. Those aren’t just civic pride. The school district charges for those spots. The Lightning paid $17,500 to have their banner on the building for five months. The Buccaneers have had their sign on the building before and it cost them $15,000 for 90 days. (to read more, buy a paper)

From Chairman of the Bored, by Gene Siudut

► I always thought of it as a great hypocrisy to be anti-abortion because of the sanctity of life but be pro-death penalty. While I don’t agree with the Vatican’s stance on abortion, I am pleased the hypocrisy has been addressed.
Again, I struggle with whether or not I am for capital punishment. This struggle is mostly due to the pieces of garbage I read about on a daily basis who seem to be great candidates for exiting this plane of existence.
Take, for example, the story that follows from CNN.com.
“A Texas mother and her boyfriend have been charged after authorities found three young siblings abandoned in a home along with the decaying body of their brother, police said Tuesday. (to read more, buy a paper)

From OPinions To Go, by Joe ONeill

► In her currently-being-promoted audio memoir, Meghan McCain criticizes those in her father’s 2008 presidential campaign who treated Sarah Palin “really horribly. Set her up for failure.” Actually, thank you Nicolle Wallace of MSNBC, who was part of the McCain campaign. She facilitated the infamous interview of Palin by Katie Couric, which essentially unmasked Palin as an embarrassingly clueless candidate.
And let’s not forget the unforgiveable, which McCain’s daughter seemingly has. It was John McCain’s call to put the unconscionably unprepared, uninformed Palin on a ticket, which was flat-out dangerous, plus an insulting sop to female voters. The ripple-effect reality: McCain’s choice helped pave the way for Donald Trump. When the bar is subterranean low for a presidential-ticket candidate, anything is possible. Couple that with a Trump-base affronting African-American on the other ticket, we had the perfect stormthat we haven’t recovered from.

From In Context, by Doris Weatherford

► Speaking (or not speaking) of visionary business skills, I want to tell you about a friend in Arkansas. She is a longtime painter and retired art teacher who inherited an old, vacant store. She has created a vibrant workplace there by renting 66 spaces, defined by lines on the floor, to other artists. They have their easels, paints, and other tools handy when they want to work, and the concept has played out amazingly well. She has 24 renters – as many as the space will hold. The key is keys: she gives each renter a key to the building so they can work when the spirit moves them. (to read more, buy a paper)

From Silhouettes, an interview with Cristal Lastra, by Tiffany Razzano

► Nearly seven years later, she’s vice president of sales and marketing for JC Newman and has loved every minute of her time with the company. “It’s been a dream come true,” she said. She shares many of the company’s values, she said. “The Newmans are just very generous people, and they give back. It’s part of who they are and the fact that they care and represent the community as well as they do is amazing.” This is part of what drew Lastra to the position. “That shared love of community,” she said, “as well as that rich, 126-year-old history.” (to read more, buy a paper)
