COVID-19 Update 6th January 2021BHPA Covid19 StatementClub sites are now closed. In light of the latest lockdown, and following the Department of Transport Coronavirus Guidance for General Aviation, which states that “For General Aviation (GA), [National Lockdown] means that no leisure flying is permitted,” the committee has decided that all KHPA sites should be closed until further notice. This means that pilots should not travel to any sites, however local, or attempt to fly from them.Your committee has been, pro bono, working tirelessly to interpret all the latest rules, and, following the science, we have concluded that, because we are all in this together, it is with a very heavy heart that we have to make this announcement. To be absolutely clear, this is not what we wanted, however let us not forget, Vidi nihil permanere sub sole, we WILL get through this.Welcome to the KHPA WebsiteThe Kernow Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (KHPA) exists to promote, facilitate and protect the free-flying activities of its members and visiting flyers by responsible airmanship and mutual understanding with the owners and those accountable for the land from which we have permission to fly.All members of the KHPA and visiting flyers are required to be members of the sole UK Hang Gliding and Paragliding governing body, the BHPA. The BHPA administers a continuous pilot training scheme, from beginner to expert, and all members have world wide third party insurance protection. The KHPA developed from the the Kernow Hang Gliding Association (KHGA) in 2002. Before that it was the Kernow Sailwing Association formed in 1975.Our active flying membership extends from age 18 to 86 and the club is known as one of the most friendly in the country.Have fun and fly safely.Monthly MeetingThere is a monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in St. Rumon s Social Club, Penryn Street, Redruth, Cornwall TR15 2SP. Telephone 01209 215743. Non-members are welcome.BulletinWe usually publish a monthly bulletin of club news, events, articles and flying reports. If you want to be on the mailing list for the bulletin please consider joining the KHPA on the Members subscriptions page. BHPA statement – Coronavirus (COVID-19)As we know, from 5 January 2021 the UK government has imposed a further lockdown in England. The other home nations have their own lockdowns in place.Unfortunately, the Parliamentary draftsman has chosen an extremely complex way of producing legislation for this lockdown in England. It has been done by amending the Regulations that came into effect in November 2020.In Tier 4 locations, the basic law is that you must stay at home. There are then exceptions to this, such as going shopping for essentials etc. There were two exceptions that were important to our sports.Firstly, to take exercise outside, and secondly, to visit a public outdoor place for the purposes of open-air recreation. The new Regulations have deleted that second exception. When considered alongside the Government s Guidelines, this means that:You can only leave your home to exercise, and not for the purpose of recreation or leisure (e.g. a picnic or a social meeting). You may exercise in a public outdoor place on your own, with one other person, or with your household or support bubble.Public outdoor places relevant to flying include local beaches, countryside accessible to the public and forests.Outdoor exercise should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area, defined as the village, town, or part of the city where you live .Stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household. The CAA have also revised their Guidelines to say that no leisure flying is permitted. The police can take action against you if you leave home without a reasonable excuse or break other rules. Fixed Penalty Notices can be issued starting at £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400.We had hoped that we might be able to advise that flying locally was permitted, and legally it is. But taken in conjunction with the pressures we are seeing on A E and ITU Departments, it does seem that BHPA advice to all our pilots, powered and unpowered must be that for the duration of this lockdown, members must refrain from flying.Marc AsquithBHPA ChairmanPosted: 7 January 2021By: Paul Dancey Hi AllFollowing the most recent information regarding Covid – 19 restrictions , guidance and advice it is good to advise that as long as nothing fundamentally changes in the coming week KHPA sites will re open on December 2nd and the advice for members not to fly will no longer apply.Sites will be open to all BHPA members other than High Cliff which is KHPA members only and accompanied guests and Carbis Bay which is currently KHPA members only, reciprocal memberships do not apply to these sites.Visiting pilots are welcome on the rest of the sites when abiding by the restrictions and  adhering to government guidelines regarding traveling, staying over and social distancing  current at the time. All pilots must make themselves aware of the latest site information via the KHPA website. If the “rule of six” is applicable (which is likely) please abide by it and take into consideration all the guidance given as to minimising risk of infection to yourself and others.Whilst fortunately the past few weeks have only seen a very small number of flyable days, members support for the Committees decision and adherence is appreciated. On a lighter note and with the increasing possibility of a vaccine coming the majority of our members should soon be near the top of the que looking at our average age
