The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum and the Citrus County Historical Society are proud to be the first to host Water/Ways on it s 2021/2022 Florida tour. This exhibit is traveling to 7 host sites throughout the state, brought to us by a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Florida Humanities.The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, housed inside the Historic Citrus County Courthouse, stands proudly on the square in Historic Downtown Inverness, a bulwark of Citrus County’s history in our ever growing community. Constructed in 1912, the courthouse was made as an embodiment of the hopes the leaders of the county had for the community.  By the 1990s, when the Old Courthouse was no longer being used for county offices, it seemed destined for demolition. The community banded together to preserve this symbol of the county’s history. In 1992 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Next began the eight year restoration process, headed by the Citrus County Historical Society.   In 2000, the building was reborn as the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. Today, the building is more than just a symbol of the community’s past; it is a collector of history, a researcher of bygone days, an educator of all, and an active participant in community of Citrus County.   Calendar of Events13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird Presented by a flock of local artists calling themselves Birds of a Feather: Jeanneine Cole, Joy Livingston, Chris Randle, Joi Sampsell, Brenda (Ren) Spilios, Susan Strawbridge, and Michele Wirt. All drawing inspiration from 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird , the famous poem by Wallace Stevens, this exhibit explores the artist s perspective through multiple art forms. Every visitor can grab a copy of the poem to read before entering the gallery to see the artists interpretations. Each piece has a stanza from the poem that the artist used to inspire their creation! We hope you all enjoy this beautiful exhibit that explores poetry, art, and perspective. Chassahowitzka Springs: Florida’s History RevealedDiscover Florida through the ages in this digital interactive exhibit. Chassahowitzka Springs were billions of years in the making; then its pristine waters and wildlife attracted human settlement and activity. Generations of humans left behind intriguing bits of their lives to tell us their stories. Today, the whole area is a microcosm of the same ecological issues that plague the state of Florida.
