Trends and Impact of the Use of Mechanical Circulatory Support for Cardiogenic Shock Secondary to Takotsubo CardiomyopathySteven Napierkowski, Upasana Banerjee, H Vernon Anderson, Konstantinos Charitakis, Mohammad Madjid, Richard W Smalling, Abhijeet DhobleDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjcard.2020.09.047Publication stage: In Press Journal Pre-ProofAmerican Journal of CardiologyPreviewxData on the trend and impact of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in patients with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) are scarce. We evaluated the incidence and outcomes of cardiogenic shock (CS) in TC patients and the trend in use of MCS over time. The National Inpatient Sample from 2005 through 2014 was used to identify patients admitted with TC and those receiving MCS. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify predictors of mortality. The Cochran-Armitage test was used for the trend analysis across the years.Long-Term Outcomes Stratified by Body Mass Index in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve ImplantationEdward J Quine, Misha Dagan, Jeremy William, Shane Nanayakkara, Luke P Dawson, Stephen J. Duffy, Julia Stehli, Ron J Dick, Nay M Htun, Dion Stub, Antony S WaltonDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjcard.2020.09.039Publication stage: In Press Journal Pre-ProofAmerican Journal of CardiologyPreviewxTranscatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become an important treatment for severe aortic stenosis. Recent studies comparing surgical aortic valve replacement and TAVI1–4 have suggested that pre-intervention assessment should focus less on predicted mortality and more on patient-related and anatomical factors to determine which treatment is most appropriate for individual patients. Increased body-mass index (BMI) has long been associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.Diagnostic Usefulness of Histological Examination of the Left Ventricular “Core” Excised to Insert a Left Ventricular Assist Device in Patients with Severe Heart FailureWilliam C. Roberts, Brandon P. Everett, Vera S. Won, Nitin KondapalliDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjcard.2020.09.038Publication stage: In Press Journal Pre-ProofAmerican Journal of CardiologyPreviewxThe left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has proven to be beneficial for patients with severe heart failure poorly responsive to anti heart failure medicine. To examine both grossly and histologically the portion of left ventricular (LV) free wall excised (“the left ventricular core”) to insert a LVAD in 337 patients with severe heart failure from a variety of causes. We collected together all photographs of LV “cores” and the histologic sections prepared from them and reexamined both. Despite the fact that these LV cores usually weighed 100 times the quantity of myocardium available to examine compared to that available by biotome inserted via a transvenous catheter, the number in which histologic study allowed an unequivocal diagnosis was limited.Effectiveness of the 40-Minute Handmade Manikin Program to Teach Hands-on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation at School CommunitiesNaomi K. Nakagawa, Katia M.G. Oliveira, Andrew Lockey, Federico Semeraro, Priscila Aikawa, Mariangela Macchione, Regiani Carvalho-Oliveira, Gabriela B. Gouvêa, Ana Paula Boaventura, Adalgisa I. Maiworm, Marcelo Calderaro, Ludhmila A. Hajjar, Eduardo V. Motta, Heraldo P. Souza, Carmen Diva Saldiva de André, Luiz F.F. Silva, Thatiane F. Polastri, Sergio Timerman, Maria-José C. Carmona, Bernd W. BöttigerDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjcard.2020.09.032Publication stage: In Press Journal Pre-ProofAmerican Journal of CardiologyPreviewxBystander training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial to improve the victims’ survival and quality of life after sudden cardiac arrest. This quasi-experimental study aimed to determine the success rate of two different programs of CPR-training for children, adolescents, and adults in school communities. We assessed the development and acquisition of the following CPR-skills: checking local safety, assessing victim's responsiveness, calling for help, assessing victim's breathing, and performing chest compression (hands and straight arms placement on the chest, compression velocity, depth, and chest release) using a 40-minute program with handmade manikins or the 120-minute program using intermediate-fidelity manikins.Central Sleep Apnea and Pacing-Induced CardiomyopathyFabian Barbieri, Agne Adukauskaite, Anna Heidbreder, Elisabeth Brandauer, Melanie Bergmann, Ambra Stefani, Evi Holzknecht, Thomas Senoner, Andrea Rubatscher, Wilfried Schgör, Markus Stühlinger, Bernhard Erich Pfeifer, Axel Bauer, Florian Hintringer, Birgit Högl, Wolfgang DichtlDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjcard.2020.09.027Publication stage: In Press Journal Pre-ProofAmerican Journal of CardiologyOpen AccessPreviewxThe role of central sleep apnea (CSA) in pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (PICM) remains speculative. In a prospective trial entitled UPGRADE, the presence of CSA was assessed by single-night polysomnography (PSG) in 54 PICM patients within one month after left ventricular lead implantation (with biventricular stimulation still not activated). CSA was diagnosed in half of patients (n=27). Patients with moderate or severe CSA were randomized to cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) versus right ventricular pacing (RVP) in a double-blinded cross-over design and re-scheduled for a follow up PSG within 3-5 months. About The American Journal of Cardiology® The American Journal of Cardiology® is an independent journal designed for cardiovascular disease specialists and internists with a subspecialty in cardiology throughout the world. AJC is an independent, scientific, peer-reviewed journal of original articles that focus on the practical, clinical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. AJC has one of the fastest acceptance to publication times in Cardiology. Features report on systemic hypertension, methodology, drugs, pacing, arrhythmia, preventive cardiology, congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, congenital heart disease, and cardiomyopathy.
