Description:

Siemens is acting with renewed urgency and creativity to make the nation’s critical infrastructure more resilient for the future. In The Optimistic Outlook podcast, Siemens USA CEO Barbara Humpton takes a deep look into the ways that reinventing infrastructure can help address multiple societal challenges. With all our experience in infrastructure, Siemens knows how today’s capabilities, especially the digital tools that we’ve helped develop, can be applied to do things that simply weren't possible before—creating the smart, networked infrastructure of America’s future. We live in a historical moment full of stresses and difficulties, but we also have the opportunity to go deep on redesigning and improving our infrastructure—our highways, energy transmission, ports, and bridges—so that we can create long-term benefits for all Americans.  The COVID-19 pandemic has also changed the way we look at manufacturing. Manufacturers running aged automation systems or resisting digital transformation used to be an industry issue. Now it’s a national one. As Barbara Humpton discovered in a podcast discussion with Jay Timmons, President and CEO, National Association of Manufacturers, the digital transformation of U.S. manufacturing is critical for America as we prepare to face the next great challenge. To better understand city and local infrastructure priorities, Siemens USA partnered with the United States Conference of Mayors and The Harris Poll to survey America’s mayors. The survey, Infrastructure, Technology and Mayors’ Priorities for Confronting a Health, Economic and Societal Crisis,” revealed many mayors’ priorities, current work underway, and the infrastructure improvements necessary to help support a strong recovery and more resilient future.  Mayors’ immediate top investment priorities for economic recovery are investing in infrastructure to generate jobs and for economic growth (69%) and expanding delivery of virtual/online city services (63%). Our vision for America’s infrastructure isn’t to rebuild, but to build forward. That’s why Siemens sees our modern mission as connecting the physical world that we helped to create, using tools such as AI, machine learning and advanced automation to optimize infrastructure performance. Networking critical infrastructure builds sustainability and resiliency for the future. Once key infrastructure is connected to the Internet of Things, it can learn and replicate best-in-class practices from other smart infrastructure. Connectivity also leads to an increasingly optimized interface between human operators and smart infrastructure, with more technicians and programmers knowing how to manage resiliency. Data is driving all this performance, as the physical world is more and more dotted with sensors capturing information.  Click here to learn more about the role of the IoT in critical infrastructure. Real Time Locating Solutions from Siemens can help manufacturers understand employee movements with software and wearable technology. Manufacturing must be able to stay on-line during a crisis. That’s why Siemens is showing manufacturing customers how to use our software to simulate employee movements around a plant (see video at right) to analyze and validate the most effective layouts for maintaining physical distancing. This approach to safely restarting or maintaining operations is one that can also be applied to making our critical infrastructure more resilient for the future. Siemens has a long history of helping businesses and communities solve complex infrastructure challenges. In supporting America during COVID-19, a key priority is helping to reopen the economy.  By leveraging our expertise in digital technologies, smart infrastructure and manufacturing we have quickly adapted the software and technologies at the core of our business to help businesses and communities come back with confidence. Click here to learn more about how Siemens has made a commitment to creating safe, healthy indoor environments. Being resilient isn’t just about being able to keep the lights on or trains running or hospitals operating. It also means steadily improving design and surpassing performance benchmarks—particularly when it comoes to greater sustainability. We don’t have to choose between resuming economic activity and addressing climate change—we can do both. Technology that’s already in the marketplace can support a stronger economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic while strengthening our commitment to sustainability. One example is the electrification of transportation—what Siemens calls eMobility.  Electrifying not only vehicles, but buses and trucks, even planes—stands out as one of the biggest opportunities we have to protect our planet and improve air quality nationwide. That’s why Siemens is working with customers on power grid modernization and charging projects to ensure U.S. infrastructure keeps pace with growing consumer demand.  Click here to learn how Siemens is shaping the eMobility market with innovation solutions.   Infrastructure development and transformation embraces many different aspects, including passenger transportation, smart grids for energy distribution, security systems, and cloud-based apps. Siemens is involved in multiple innovative infrastructure projects across the country that are driving security, mobility, and productivity. This Siemens project is both a working campus and open laboratory that helps to raise the awareness and understanding of the importance of interconnected power infrastructures. The era of the smart stadium is here, and the place that the Jacksonville Jaguars call home—TIAA Bank Field—is maxing-out the fan experience and securing optimized playing-field conditions using the Siemens breakthrough software MindSphere. Smarter land use, reduced operating costs, and lower emissions through an innovative city parking solution. Increasingly complex traffic situations at urban intersections require more intelligent solutions. Luckily, real-time data can translate into better information to manage safety and efficiency. The new Florida East Coast Railway operates trains from Miami Central Station via Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach. Cybersecurity inhabits the entire Siemens digital ecosystem, which can deliver the sophisticated cybersecurity that critical infrastructure requires.
