Do you find everyday activities such as eating or drinking hot and cold foods, or even just brushing and flossing your teeth make you wince with pain? Toothache can be utterly miserable, as the pain can be sharp or a constant throbbing. Common causes of toothache and dental pain include: Tooth decayDental abscessHaving a fractured toothHaving a leaking or damaged fillingTeeth grindingHaving infected gums Symptoms can include: Noticing you have an unpleasant taste in your mouthThe gum around the tooth can be swollenYou may have a persistent headache or even fever A tooth abscess is caused by bacterial infection right at the root of the tooth, or right in between the tooth and the gum The most common symptom is having a severe toothache that might be sharp or throbbing, but other symptoms can include: Having a feverFeeling pain when eatingNoticing increased tooth sensitivity to hot and coldHaving an unpleasant taste in your mouth or bad breathThe gums surrounding the tooth is swollen or red, and this swelling can spread to the jawThe abscess may have created an open sore on the side of the gum Dental plaque is a sticky biofilm that builds up over your teeth during the day. It develops if you eat a lot of foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars, as the bacteria use these foods for energy, and the layer of plaque will contain both bacteria and proteins and sugars. When dental plaque initially forms it is a soft layer that can easily be scraped away, but within just forty-eight hours it will begin to harden, and in a few days will be so hard that it can only be removed through being scraped away during professional teeth Gum disease makes it easy for bacteria to accumulate in the mouth and eventually affect the rest of the body. Because a diabetic has lower resistance to infection, immediate treatment is needed for the gum disease. Maintaining good oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing plus regular visits to the dentist can help in managing gum disease and decreasing the risk of infection. Oral cancer is a growing concern.  It is, sadly, the most common cancers affecting people in North America, The 5-year survival rate is less than 50 percent If you do have cancer, your cancer treatment causes dental complications; some of these can become chronic or painful. Dry mouth is one of the complications from cancer, but other patients may experience overly sensitive teeth.  Teeth that decay quickly could also be an issue. One of the main causes of sleep apnea and snoring is a reduction of the airflow when the person’s breathing airway is narrowed. NON-SURGICAL SNORING SOLUTION: ASLEEP APNEA / SNORING APPLIANCE Many people who snore are reluctant to try the cumbersome sleep apnea machines. The good news is there are other options. We have found a dental oral appliance similar to a mouthguard to be very successful in preventing sleep apnea and stopping snoring. I'm in Houston from Charlotte on a work trip and woke up (yesterday) with a toothache. It kept getting worse and worse getting to the point of a migraine and throbbing pain within 15 inches of my tooth. I confirmed that Midtown accepted my insurance and asked how soon they could see me. They told me to come in now and shortly afterward I was having an infected tooth pulled and my jaw bone scrapped clean. I told Dr. Patel and his team that pain killers don't work on me very well, but they found a way to make me comfortable during the procedure and I left in significantly less pain than I was in when I arrived. Thanks to Dr. Patel, his staff and the Midtown Dentistry team for taking such great care of me!
