Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309-0466 Welcome to the Stanford Division of Hematology, a dynamic center for basic and translational research, clinical trials, patient care, and teaching. Our physicians, scientists, staff, and trainees collaborate to advance the understanding and treatment of hematologic disorders, all with the goal of improving outcomes for patients with these diseases. In pursuit of this objective, we engage with the broader Stanford community to bring innovation to our efforts.Over the last 20 years, multiple novel therapies have resulted in significant clinical advances for hematologic diseases, and Stanford investigators have played key roles in their development, including imatinib for CML, ibrutinib for CLL, midostaurin for mast cell disease, and many others. Our clinicians have expertise in a broad range of hematologic disorders including acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, thrombotic diseases, coagulation disorders, and general hematology. The basic and translational research efforts of the division have led to fundamental discoveries in areas as diverse as leukemia stem cells, genomics, thrombosis, telomere cancer biology, and the microbiome. Our passionate faculty members have mentored and trained leaders in the field of hematology and are committed to attract the next generation of leading physicians and research scientists. We invite you to learn more about us through our website. Dr. Ravi Majeti was interviewed by AML Global Portal at the recent ESH 5th International Conference on AML. William Shomali MD, came to Stanford as a fellow in Hematology-Oncology where he focused his clinical and research training on myeloid neoplasms, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). He originally completed his MD in Jordan and came to the US for further training with internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also served as Chief Resident. He published numerous first author papers during residency. While at Stanford, he conducted research under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Gotlib investigating novel agents in clinical trials for the treatment MPNs. As a fellow, Dr. Shomali was successfully awarded several fellowships, and has authored several review articles demonstrating expertise in the field. With his mentor Dr. Gotlib, he has written an investigator-initiated clinical trial for advanced myelofibrosis, a subtype of MPN, that has recently been funded by the sponsoring company. This will be one of the few investigator-initiated clinical trials in the Division of Hematology – a key priority for our research efforts and his plans as an independent faculty member.Dr. Shomali was awarded a fellowship on the Stanford Hematology T32 training grant, which has a mission to develop trainees into academic careers. One key feature of this T32 grant is the inclusion of both clinical and laboratory researchers. William is the first clinical researcher to be awarded this fellowship, and it will be a key outcome for this training grant for him to progress into an academic position.Recently, Dr. Shomali was awarded the 2020 Conquer Cancer (ASCO Foundation) Young Investigator Award (YIA) to promote quality research in oncology. The Hematology Division supports his ambition to establish a career with clinical practice and clinical research. Dr. William Shomali is unique in his skillsets, interests, and accomplishments, and represents a very high value addition to the Hematology Division. The LLS awarded $6.75 million to nine of the most exceptional scientists in the field. Among the awardees was Stanford Hematology's Ravindra Majeti, MD, PhD. Dr. Majeti is generating cell-based models to test the progression of preleukemic cells into acute myeloid leukemia (AML). His lab will use these models to test potential therapies and the role of the microenvironment in disease progression .Read the rest of the story here. Congratulations to Dr. Rondeep Brar on being awarded the 2019 Department of Medicine Teaching Award for the Hematology Division. Dr. Brar consistently received high praise from the trainees for his teaching in clinic, educational lectures, and attention to evidence-based practice - a very well-deserved honor! The Division of Hematology congratulates Dr. William Shomali for receiving the ASCO Foundation's Young Investigator Award (YIA). Dr. Shomali is an outstanding Postdoctoral Medical Fellow in Hematology-Oncology at Stanford Medicine. Cheers, Dr. Shomali!  Dr. May Chien is a hematologist trained in internal medicine and pediatrics.  Her clinical interests lie in inherited blood disorders which are diagnosed in children but extend into adulthood, as well as hemostasis and thrombosis.  Her research interests include gene therapy for hemophilia and understanding the pathophysiology of immune thrombocytopenia.  Dr. Chien received her BA in Biology at Amherst College, MA and attended University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.  She stayed at USC to complete a residency in combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at USC and served as chief resident.  She trained in pediatric hematology/oncology and adult hematology at Stanford University, where she is now a clinical assistant professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Beth Martin, Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Pre-Clinical Teaching Dr. Jason Gotlib, University of Vienna Researcher of the Year, ECNM Medal and Trophy, 2019. John Baird, MD, Jason Gotlib, MD, MS on recent developments in the treatment of advanced systemic mastocytosis (advSM) with inhibitors of the KIT receptor tyrosine kinase.
