A cover letter basically explains why you are sending your resume , Sending a cover letter is Your presentation . It is a way to introduce yourself to the employer for a possible position but have you wonder : How to write ? What to include in a cover letter . Lets read more about it from experts.





Writing the perfect cover letter that screams call me takes practice -- a lot of practice. After having reviewed and written tens of thousands of resumes and cover letters, I can verify that for the right candidate a well-written resume and cover letter could open a world of opportunities. Unfortunately, many job seekers do not take this aspect of their job search campaign very seriously. Worse still, some choose to follow unreliable advice from well-meaning -- but ill-informed -- supporters and create career documents that damage the future of an otherwise promising career.
There is a lot of discussion about creating a captivating resume, but very little attention is paid to the document that introduces the resume: a cover letter. A powerful cover letter can not only deliver a solid first impression but can also persuade the hiring manager to pay more attention to the accompanying resume, which, otherwise, would rarely win more than ten seconds of face time.
Forget about template cover letters and samples from friends and loved ones. They are not designed to showcase your unique strengths. Your cover letter must deliver a unique impression and position you as a unique solution for the employers needs.
Consider the following strategies as you attempt to improvise your cover letter:
Take stock of your strengths
Take stock of all your strengths and accomplishments and create a list of selling points that you could address in the cover letter. Not random selling points. The list should encompass highly desirable traits that an employer would absolutely love to see in a potential employee.

Translate your past accomplishments into potential benefits
Many candidates do a remarkable job of presenting their past experience and accomplishments, but what they often fail to do is translate those accomplishments into future benefits for the potential employer. This may sound very trivial but viewed from a hiring managers perspective it makes much more sense, especially if you are reviewing thousands of resumes every month.
The following example clarifies this point:
Weak Example:At ZZZ Corp, I was responsible for hiring and training staff.
Better:At ZZZ Corp, I leveraged my leadership skills to recruit, train, and develop a cohesive team of thirty employees. As a result of my training, our team increased productivity by over 30% within six months. I am confident that I can utilize my ability to motivate teams to maximize performance and deliver double-digit gains at your organization as well.
Stay focused
Dont try to create one cover letter for every position you will target. The ideal strategy would be to write a customized cover letter for each position, but if that may be too much, at least create one cover letter for every job target so you can address specific requirements that may be unique to that job function.
Craft a compelling positioning strategy
Ever wonder why top brands are so successful? Popular brands are very successful at crafting a compelling message that positions them as a cut above the competition. There are some very valuable lessons that these brands provide for the benefit of a job seeker, especially while developing career marketing documents such as resumes and cover letters.
Consider the following excerpt from a cover letter:
I provided outstanding leadership at XYZ Company.
Better strategy:

As general manager for XYZ Company, I utilized my leadership skills to lead, motivate, and manage a cohesive team of thirteen senior-level direct reports, who in turn oversaw 1,000 cross-functional employees. In addition to my team leadership skills, I specialized in turning-around challenging situations into opportunities for growth.
Notice how the writer positions herself as a turnaround specialist in the second scenario. The first example conveyed a fact but the second version positioned the writer as someone offering unique skills.
Presentation counts. It is true that one must have the goods before trying to sell them, but a lot depends on how you present them as well. Experience and presentation work together to create a solid first impression. One falls apart without the other.
In addition to being an introduction, the cover letter should serve as a brief proposal highlighting how your past background prepares you to serve as a powerful contributor toward the companys success. It must position you as a unique player who can catapult the organization to new heights.

Why the importance ?

Because your resume has to cater to two distinctly different audiences -an ATS that is searching your resume for job relevant keywords and phrases and -a hiring team (HR and line managers) that will evaluate your resume for the requisite skills and experience It can be very difficult to get your resume past an ATS. However, if your resume succeeds in getting past these systems, the chances are much greater that you will be selected for an interview.





Types of Resumes:

There are several basic types of resumes used to apply for job openings. Depending on your personal circumstances, choose a chronological, a functional, combination, or a targeted resume.





Chronological Resume:

A chronological resume starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current, or most recent job, first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it's easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them.This type of resume works well for job seekers with a strong, solid work history.




Functional Resume:

A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history.


Combination Resume:

A combination resume lists your skills and experience first. Your employment history is listed next. With this type of resume you can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and also provide the chronological work history that employers prefer.



ATS:An applicant tracking system (ATS) is a software application that enables the electronic handling of recruitment needs. An ATS can be implemented on an enterprise or small business level, depending on the needs of the company. An ATS is very similar to customer relationship management systems, but are designed for recruitment tracking purposes.

So what do you need to do to build a scanner friendly resume?

Develop a list of relevant keywords Keywords are nouns or noun phrases that identify the skills unique to your profession or industry. Unfortunately, there is no exact science when it comes to identifying key words but there are some strategies you can use to discover them: Job descriptions, Professional association websites, Recruiters that specialize in your field, Company websites, Occupational outlook handbook, Industry magazines, Annual reports.

Use a Standard HeadingThis must include: Your First Name, Your Last Name, Address, Phone Number and Email address.

Why? An ATS is designed to capture information in fields in that order. If your heading displays other data such as a career objective or job title, the risk is increases that it wont be scanned properly thus lowering its chances of getting through to a hiring decision-maker.Build a key word rich summary - Use the key word list you developed in step one to build your summary. The summary should immediately follow your heading and it must consist of several brief statements that highlight your most noteworthy qualities, achievements and skills. Tailoring every word in this section will enable you to make it keyword rich. A well written summary typically includes some key career highlights, such as years of experience, unique mix of skills, range of environments in which you have experience, significant professional accomplishments, awards and promotions.

Use Standard Fonts:ATS software systems are designed to match characters scanned from your resume with standard letter shapes. That makes it imperative that your resume be formatted with a font that these systems can easily recognize. In fact, font choice is the single most important factor in creating a scanner friendly resume. The most effective typefaces are Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, Verdana and Courier.



Format properly to maximize performance:


Use standard paper size 8-1/2 x 11; printed on one sideUse no more than two fonts in sizes between 10 and 12 pointsUse lots of white space and headings to enhance readabilityHeadings should be either Bold or ALL CAPITALS.Dont italicize as it causes confusion to scannersDont use underlined text again, confuses the scannerAvoid using vertical lines, graphics, shading or boxesPlace your name and contact details in the header so that it appears on every pageWrite your descriptions with a focus on accomplishments rather than tasksEnsure that there are no typosYour resume is the most important weapon in your job search arsenal. It must be refreshed periodically to ensure that it is adapted to the latest technologies and preferences of your target companies.
