Description:

UbiSketch is a ubiquitous real-time sketch-based communication tool, supporting information sharing and social communication based on natural interactions with paper-based supports. The interactive system enables people to write text notes or draw sketches with digital pens and paper and share them in real time via their mobile phones. Shark Bay, Western Australia is host to one of the most complex societies of nonhumans known to modern science. Adult males maintain up to three levels of nested alliances through competitive and cooperative engagements. The two males in the photograph - Rickets and Sloopy - are first-order mates, but they are reliably found with 12 other close associates - The Blues Brothers . We introduce a system to aid the process of data collection and analysis during observational research by providing non-intrusive automatic capture of paper-based annotations. HIPerPaper: Pen and Paper interaction with high resolution wall displays HIPerPaper is a novel digital pen and paper interface that enables natural interaction with the HIPerSpace wall, a 31.8 by 7.5 foot tiled wall display of 268,720,000 pixels. HIPerPaper provides a flexible, portable, and inexpensive medium for interacting with large high-resolution wall displays. Welcome to the Distributed Cognition and Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, Department of Cognitive Science, University of California, San Diego. The Dcog-HCI Lab is directed by ProfessorsJim HollanandEd Hutchins.Currently there is a shift in cognitive science toward a view of cognition as a property of systems that are larger than isolated individuals. This extends the reach of cognition to encompass interactions between people as well as interactions with resources in the environment. Members of the Dcog-HCI lab are dedicated to developing the theoretical and methodological foundations engendered by this broader view of cognition and interaction. We are united in the belief that distributed cognition promises to be a particularly fertile framework for designing and evaluating augmented environments and digital artifacts. A central image for us is environments in which people pursue their activities in collaboration with the elements of of the social and material world. Our core research efforts are directed at understanding such environments: what we really do in them, how we coordinated our activity in them, and what role technology should play in them.
