It turns out that dandelion fritters, cooked by her gorgeous daughter, is her family s new Mother s Day tradition. I LOVE this idea (look how yummy they look!) and so I have decided to actively work on making dandelion fritters (cooked by my lil chickens) my family s new Mother s Day tradition too. Tell us how you make them, Michelle? I asked and she (the do-it-now person that she is) immediately sent through a sweet post, written by her and her daughter, for me to share with y all here. What I especially love about this little story is how traditions can naturally unfurl. I imagine Michelle picking dandelions with her daughter when she was still a little girl and the experience they shared of making dandelion fritters over a camp fire together dandelions became a magic that connected them and now, all these years later, they connect them still. The mother gifting a magical experience to the child and then, years later, the grown child gifting that same magical experience to the mother. Childhood magic giving way to adult magic and showing us that everything we do (or did) with our little ones can have a lasting depth of meaning as we journey with them into the newness ahead.Thank you, my sweet friend.:: ::Dandelion FrittersSometimes new traditions are born as our children become more fully in this world. While the blissful magic of the younger years seems to wane, their skills and confidence and independent creativity increase. One Mother s Day you may wake up to find your child has gathered, battered, and fried up an amazingly beautiful treat in your honor! Here is how your child may describe it or at least how mine did. I always love eating from the land. It feels so special to eat something that you ve worked hard to create, with the help of Mother Earth, of course. We made them together once before,  many years ago at an overnight campout with our Full Moon Girls wilderness group, we made dandelion fritters over the camp fire. We harvested the blossoms, mixed up the batter, and fried them in a cast iron pan over a carefully made cooking fire. They were fun to eat and tasted bitter and sweet all at once. Here s how you can make these wild-crafted treats:Harvest open dandelion blossoms leaving long stems on so it will be easier to handle them later.Make up your favorite pancake batter. 4 drops of Wild Orange essential oil, some cinnamon, and a nice glug of almond extract makes it extra yummy.Heat a cast iron pan with a generous amount of butter (best!) or oil. Aim for about 1/8 inch oil in the pan.Hold the flower by its stem and dip it into the batter. Wiggle it around to make sure the flower head gets coated with the batter. An important tip is NOT to get much batter on the part of the flower head that is on the stem side, the part that will not touch the pan, or else you will have raw batter on the tops of your fritters.Continuing to hold the dandelion by the stem, put the coated flower petals down into the oiled or buttered pan with the stems sticking up. Add more until the pan is full but leave room between them so they are not touching and not oozing into each other.Cook until bottoms are golden brown and crispy.Remove and drain if desired.Place on a beautiful plate, stems up. The stems will be how you pick the fritters up, but do not eat the stems as they are very bitter. Give to your mother on Mother s Day and she will love it! As our children move through their years of the Good and the Beautiful into the years of the True, we can often feel bereft of magic, ritual, and beloved nourishing traditions. It takes courage, imagination, and an observant heart to see that the good and beautiful seeds we planted are growing true to form just as they are supposed to. From dandelion wishes and dandelion chains to dandelion fritters all is Good, Beautiful, and True.:: ::What a beautiful Mother s Day tradition!Blessings and magic,Donni I love this poem. I love it because it makes me see how easy things can be. We make things more difficult by all the fluffy stuff we cover them in. Sometimes, in order to move forward, we just need to do what we know we need to do.I like to also replace the she let go with she did it .She Let GoShe let go. Without a thought or a word, she let go.She let go of the fear.  She let go of the judgments.  She let go of the confluence of opinions swarming around her head.  She let go of the committee of indecision within her.  She let go of all the ‘right’ reasons. Wholly and completely, without hesitation or worry, she just let go.She didn’t ask anyone for advice. She didn’t read a book on how to let go.  She didn’t search the scriptures. She just let go.  She let go of all of the memories that held her back.  She let go of all of the anxiety that kept her from moving forward.  She let go of the planning and all of the calculations about how to do it just right. She didn’t promise to let go. She didn’t journal about it. She didn’t write the projected date in her Day-Timer. She made no public announcement and put no ad in the paper. She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily horoscope. She just let go.She didn’t analyze whether she should let go. She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter. She didn’t do a five-step Spiritual Mind Treatment. She didn’t call the prayer line. She didn’t utter one word. She just let go.No one was around when it happened. There was no applause or congratulations. No one thanked her or praised her. No one noticed a thing. Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.There was no effort. There was no struggle. It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad. It was what it was, and it is just that.In the space of letting go, she let it all be. A small smile came over her face. A light breeze blew through her. And the sun and the moon shone forevermore.by Rev. Safire RoseBlessings and magic,Donni Literally translated, dōTERRA means of the Earth and I am truly in love with these little gifts from the Earth. As a mom, doTERRA essential oils have been transformative in our home. They have been an important piece in empowering me to become the healer in my home, to take control of my own (and my family s) emotional, physical and environmental health, using completely pure and natural plant medicines that are safe, effective and affordable. These powerfully healing oils can be used daily, for a variety of reasons :: to make us and our children feel grounded, to temper toddler (or teenage) turmoil, to calm us when we are anxious, to help us all sleep peacefully, to help us focus, to help boost our immune systems and to keep us healthy. We are invested in living a healthy lifestyle eating clean and healthy food, getting enough sleep, exercising daily and spending time on self love. My apothecary of essential oils adds such value to this healthy lifestyle by helping us reduce our toxic load in so many powerful ways. They are tools we turn to for everyday health challenges like the sniffles, coughs, the flu, stomach bugs, earaches, headaches, hot flashes, scrapes, mosquito bites, skin rashes, blemishes, wounds, indigestion, nausea… their benefits are powerful and profound. They offer us emotional support, immune support and have become our medicine cabinet too… and the best part is that we now have a first port of call that is non-toxic, safe for everyone, effective and affordable. If you are at all curious about bringing essential oils into your home, I’d love to chat. You can contact me with any question at all. What are Essential Oils?Essential oils are pure extracts from plants. They have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years and are effective in treating a wide range of health and emotional challenges. They are safe for everyone and, unlike pharmaceuticals, have little to no harmful side effects. In fact, they benefit the body in many different ways. So, using an essential oil for a specific ailment will not only help remedy that ailment, but it will support your body in other, unintentional, ways too. Essential oils are are medicinally potent, 50-70 times more powerful than herbs one drop goes a very long way.In a nutshell, essential oils are a safe, effective and affordable alternatives to many synthetic products and pharmaceuticals. Why doTERRA Essential Oils?I have done an enormous amount of research into the many brands of essential oils available and, not only am I firm on my choice of only using dōTERRA oils for my family, but I am also honored to partner with dōTERRA and align my integrity with this beautiful earth and eco-conscious company.dōTERRA oils are unquestionably  the highest quality and safest essential oils that you can use. They are harvested and distilled in a way that is extremely earth and eco-conscious, that supports the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people in the developing world and that preserves their medicinal quality. As my family is the most precious thing to me, I am serious about only using the best when it comes to our health.1. dōTERRA oils are the purest and most medicinally potent essential oils on the planet. There are no fillers, synthetics, fragrances, perfumes or pesticides, ever! just 100% pure Essential Oil.Beware of other oil companies who label their oils as 100% pure, when in fact, they are not : the essential oil industry is unregulated and unethical practices are now prominent. As dōTERRA is booming, with more and more moms realizing that oils are a safe, effective and affordable way to care for their families (there are now almost 8 million moms using dōTERRA oils to care for our most precious), unscrupulous companies are trying to jump in on the dōTERRA bandwagon and are preying on unsuspecting people by selling synthetic and adulterated oils under the 100% pure seal. Current regulations allow a company to say that their oil is 100% pure if it contains at least 5% pure essential oil in the bottle. Yes, you read that right it only has to contain 5% pure essential oil to be labeled 100% PURE! How shocking is that? With only 5% real essential oil in the bottle, synthetic fragrances have to be added to give the oil the aroma. Filler oils like mineral oil are added to add volume to the bottle. These impure essential oils are not only ineffective (how could they work if they only contain 5% real essential oil?) but their synthetic ingredients are actually harmful!dōTERRA is the leader in the essential oil industry because they operate with such high integrity. They are unwaveringly committed to ensuring that every single bottle of dōTERRA essential oil is HONESTLY 100% pure. They ensure this by stringent 3rd party testing protocols that tests each liter of essential oil produced, many times before it lands in your hand. dōTERRA is the only company that allows transparency in this testing process, letting you view the results of all oil tests at any stage by visiting : sourcetoyou.comWith dōTERRA, you know that a bottle of Lavender oil contains only 100% pure Lavender Oil, always. Therefore, you can be confident that dōTERRA Lavender oil will work!2. No pesticides or other synthetic chemicals are used on dōTERRA plants, EVER!3. dōTERRA harvests plants that grow where they are indigenous. This is super important because plants that grow in their natural habitat have the most superior medicinal chemistry. They have evolved over hundreds of thousand years to flourish naturally in that exact environment, with that exact soil profile and those exact seasons. These plants are far superior in medicinal potency to the same plant grown on a farm. Most other essential oil companies farm their plants in unnatural environments and therefore need to use pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers (even if they use organic pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers I prefer none at all!)Farmed plants do not have the same quality medicinal profile of plants grown in their natural habitat. This is another important reason why I choose dōTERRA for my family.4. Co-Impact Sourcing :: two-thirds of dōTERRA oils are sources from developing countries where the local communities need the harvesting industry the most. dōTERRA searches for places where the oils grow naturally AND where the commerce and economy from growing these oils will make the most impact on the local communities. dōTERRA partners with these local plant artisans to ensure that plants and crops are sustainably harvested while making sure growers get fair and on-time payments and profit-sharing programs to uplift whole communities. dōTERRA is a circle of giving — we are given these gifts from the earth to help support our physical and emotional health while the company economically serves growers and harvesters with complete integrity and those in need with life-changing philanthropy while operating in an unwaveringly earth and eco-conscious way. It s a beautiful ecosystem to be a part of.dōTERRA embodies the spirit of a new world economic order, proving that a company can be earth and eco-conscious, humanitarian, sustainable and highly profitable while giving thousands of moms around the world, health and financial abundance. This is the economic future I am proud to subscribe to. Traveling with kids is lots of fun. They learn so much from seeing new sights, meeting new people and experiencing new things. The family memories we make while away from home are priceless too. We are all together and bond in a new and meaningful way. My family has just come home from a trip to California that was so much fun. Our family unit feels closer for having spent weeks together, just hanging out with one another and having time to enjoy each other s company, away from our busy schedules that often get in the way.Notwithstanding all the beautiful things we get from traveling with our kids, being out of our routines and rhythms can be challenging. Bedtimes get stretched, sleep may be disrupted, mealtimes become more flexible and our daily habits adjust and shift. This can be unsettling for us and our children. And what about a plane journey or a long trip in the car!! How will our children ever get through sitting still for hours on end? And the germs! In fact, these worries might very well be preventing us from traveling at all!  These worries might be preventing us from the happy experiences that will far out way the challenges keeping us from them. Finding natural solutions to help settle us into the joys of traveling is key to a happy and successful traveling-with-kids experience. If you don t already use essential oils to help you while traveling with your kids, I m here to let you know that these little bottles of magic will change things forever! They will help you and your kids in so many positive ways. They ease the transitions, settle the emotions, help with sleep, keep germs at bay and help make things feel a little more like home. I would never set off on a trip without them! This is how I use them ::Disclaimer (I have to say this) : I am not a doctor and it is important to follow doTERRA s safety guides when using their oils. On Guard Oil this is doTERRA s protective and immune boosting blend.I never leave home without this oil. I roll it on our feet (fun fact :: oils absorb best from the soles of the feet as they have the largest pores), I diffuse it in our hotel room and I use it to sanitize our hands I even spray it on airplane seats and trays because I love the smell so much. It keeps our bodies healthy and boosts our immune systems. Hey, prevention is better than cure, right? It s hard to have a good time away from home if we, or our little ones, have the sniffles or are sick and On Guard helps us stay fit and healthy.Another fun fact : On Guard contains Clove Oil. Clove Oil is super high in antioxidants. On the ORAC scale that measures antioxidant capacity, blueberries have a measurement of 9 000 units. Clove has a measurement of 300 000 units! Clove is 30 times more antioxidant rich than blueberries.Lavender OilLavender reduces anxiety and emotional stress and promotes a feeling of calm for all of us. Boy do we use a lot of lavender when we are on the road. It definitely helps to even out our emotions and ward off those out-of-our-comfort-zone eruptions. When I can tell that the kids are getting anxious and feeling are starting to get a little out of control, I rub some Lavender onto their necks and their feet. It calms them within minutes. But it s not only for the kids I use it too when I feel the discomfort of anxiety creeping in.We diffuse Lavender in our room at night and it definitely helps us all get a good night s sleep, even though we do miss sleeping in our own beds.Lavender is great to have around for little mishaps too it soothes cuts and scrapes, sunburn, a rash and even helps to take the hurt out of a bee sting.Serenity and Balance Oil doTERRA s restful and grounding blendsI never leave these two oils behind either they are lifesavers when traveling with children. I put Balance on our feet in the mornings to keep us grounded and calm even though our routines are all over the place. Serenity goes in the diffusers at night to help us get over jet lag fast and keep us having restful sleep throughout our trip.Melaleuca (Tea Tree) OilMelaleuca is a handy little oil that I keep in my purse. When the airplane is about to take off, I rub a little (diluted with carrier oil) around our ears and onto our earlobes and it helps our ears adjust to the cabin air pressure changes. A few times on flights, a nearby baby has had painful ear pressure challenges and a little shared Melaleuca has never failed to help ease the discomfort. It also has strong antimicrobial properties and we dab a little Melaleuca onto any skin wounds to help keep infections at bay.DigestZen doTERRA s digestive blend. This oil is for sore tummies, indigestion, bloating and any other digestive issue we so frequently get while traveling. The food we eat while on the road is often different from the food our bodies are used to and so digestive challenges always arise. Rubbing a little DigestZen onto our tummies when they are feeling sore or bloated or drinking a drop with a glass of water really helps us while on the go.One of my children suffers from carsickness and DigestZen has been a lifesaver for him! No more nausea and oopsing in the car.Breathe doTERRA s respiratory blendI take this oil on trips in case of seasonal threats and breathing difficulties. It is a blend of all the oils that work with the sinuses and respiratory system to open up airways and reduce congestion. If we are feeling a little stuffy, I diffuse Breathe in our rooms at night. It s also a good oil to have on the plane as the air conditioned atmosphere can make our noses and throats feel dry and uncomfortable rubbing a little breath under our noses always helps.FrankincenseBecause you can never leave Frankincense out of anything, ever! It s the King Of Oils and should go wherever we go. We rub a drop of Frankincense onto our feet daily for general well being, rejuvenation and cell repair. I add a drop to my skincare products morning and night for skin health and hydration. Frankincense also has powerful antimicrobial properties and can be used to disinfect skin wounds and aids in speedy healing. It’s so empowering to have these little bottles of magic to help while we are on the road. They benefit us in so many ways. Traveling with kids is super rewarding but can be stressful too why not employ these natural tools to help make our trips and vacations as wonderful as possible. As you can tell, I m passionate about the benefits of essential oils and would love to help you get started on your oil journey. If you are ready to give them a try get in touch and we can discuss your options :: email me at donni@theMagicOnions.comYou can also visit my Essential Oils Page for more info on how we use essential oils in our home. Here s to happy, safe and sweet-smelling travels.Blessings and magic,Donni We have been making the cutest ornaments for our Christmas tree :: glittery acorns! What could be cuter than adding a touch of woodland whimsy to make your tree sparkle and shine. This is what we used to make our cute acorn ornaments Materials :glitter in lots of cute colorsacorns picked up from the neighborhood treesglue school glue is the easiest to work with but if you are impatient to wait for glue to dry, super glue might be your best betstring any string will do but we love the natural appeal of hemp stringscissorshot glue gunblack marker to make things easierdrill you ll need a super small drill bitpaint pallet or an old muffin tinCan t find acorns in your neighborhood, you can buy them on Etsy. The largest acorns are the best and ones with little woody stems are magical.Tutorial :Separate the acorns from the caps by pressing on acorns while holding the caps firmly in your fingers. If your acorns are green, they won t come apart easily and you will need to leave them in a cool dry place for a few days to dry out. With the acorns separated, use the black marker to number the acorns with their corresponding acorn caps so that you will know exactly which acorn fits perfectly in which cap. The numbers will help you match up the pairs. Ensure that the markings are at the top of the acorn and on the inside of the acorn cap we don t want to be able to see them once we have glued them back together again.Cut the string into 6-inch lengths. We ll make loops with this hemp string for our acorns to hang from.Drill holes in the top of each acorn cap. Your drill bit should be double the diameter of the hemp string.Thread the hemp string through the inside of an acorn cap and back down through the hole again, making a hanging loop. Make sure that the two ends of the hemp string on the inside of the acorn cap are not long enough to protrude past the lip of the cap. With the hot glue gun, put a bit of glue onto the hemp string inside the acorn cap.And stick the acorn back into its cap.You now have a perfect little acorn ornament. We were tempted to leave our acorn ornaments natural as we thought they looks soooooo cute and could imagine how sweet our tree would look with natural acorns dotted all around it. But, the consensus, when including the children s vote of course (damn!), was to continue with our original plans of making them spectacularly glittery. Who can pass up a chance for some sparkle and shine? To keep the glitter under control, we used a recycled mini muffin tin, filling it up with many colors of wonderful glitter. I have also used a little plastic paint pallet but the dishes are a little shallow and if your kids are young, there is more potential to make a bit of a glittery mess with them. I also filled one of the cups with glue.Paint an acorn with school glue, making sure not to get glue on the acorn cap! Now, dip the acorn in the glitter, spreading color evenly all around the acorn.Set your amazingly gorgeous acorn ornaments aside to dry completely. A nice sunny spot on a window sill will work perfectly. If you are nervous of the glitter coming off your ornaments and showering your house with fairy dust, spray them with a coat of Polyurethane spray. This forms a protective coating over the glitter and it will not sprinkle around. We, of course, like fairy dust, so decided not to follow this step.Hang them on your Christmas tree for some magical sparkle and shine! And just wait until your Christmas lights make them shimmer. There will be a gasp from the crowd! In years gone bye, I ve made these sweet acorn ornaments for gifts for family and friends. They hare consistently been a big hit!I ve make a cool graphic for you to share on Pinterest just in case you need to make some more next year!Happy Christmas crafting may the peach of the season fill you and your loved ones with joy.Blessings and magic,Donni Hi Love, Welcome to The Magic Onions. I’m so happy that you are here!  I am a mama, advocating for reducing the toxic load on our bodies and our emotions (and our planet) so that we can all thrive in this beautiful world, unburdened by harmful things that are holding us back. I believe that nature and essential oils and a free spirit can heal our wounds and I teach how these gifts from the earth can support us and our families through life s ups and downs. Let’s connect if this resonates with your heart. We are a Waldorf inspired family. The Waldorf way of life has brought us so much joy. From parenting through the early childhood days and, now, into the teenage years, I am eternally grateful for the magic it infuses into our days. Anthroposophy and Waldorf philosophies have been an anchor for our family in this uncertain climate and I can’t recommend this way of life highly enough. If you are wanting to bring Waldorf ideas into your home, I share exactly how you can do this, easily and effortlessly, in my Waldorf Workshop. The last thing I want to share in this little introduction, is that I am a breast cancer survivor. I feel vulnerable sharing this because it is still so new and raw in my life. But I am cancer free today because other women were brave and beautiful enough to share their stories with me. I feel compelled to be that for you if  you (or a loved one) are facing these same fears I faced not so long ago. I am an open book to you and will share my journey freely, so if you want to ask a question, share your story with me, laugh or cry, please get in touch               (I mean it!)Big blessings and magic to you,ox Donni
