Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington Recreation Commission monthly board meeting will be held Tuesday, June 22 at 7 a.m. by Amber Countryman, Sumner Newscow — Tony Stringer has been collecting Hot Wheels since he was 9 years old. As an adult, he had stopped playing with cars, but realized that just collecting them was not very much fun.Tony Stringer“In 2018, I started looking at YouTube videos of people racing Hot Wheels, and thought to myself that would be fun,” Stringer said. “So through trial and error, I built a drag strip powered by gravity.”Stringer’s first attempt at a starting gate was a plexiglass box with lifting doors. The doors broke off, so Stringer went back to the drawing board.“I designed a starting system where you step on a foot pedal that releases the car to go down the track,” Stringer said. “I wanted each person racing to control their own car at the start.”The portable track is built in six-foot sections so that he can take it anywhere. Currently, the track is stored at Stringer’s house. Sumner Newscow report — Summer is here and people are setting up their pools. Just a reminder from the Building and Codes Department to ensure pools are as safe as possible. All pools over 24-inches deep or that hold over 5,000 gallons of water require a fence constructed with approved fencing material and at least five feet high with a locking gate. Please contact the Building and Codes Office at (620) 326 3871 for information on approved materials. In addition to the required fencing, the use of pool covers is encouraged. The pool cannot be within 10 ft. of an overhead power line, and if you run an electrical cord out to the pool for a pump, remember to have a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protector for it. This will reduce the risk of injury from shock or electrocution. Lola AguilarLola Aguilar, of Wellington, died on Friday, June 11, 2021, at the age of 82 with her family by her side. Top of the fourth. Wichita State, ranked No. 23 in NCAA College Women’s Softball, was battling the top-seed, overly-talented Oklahoma Sooners in the World Series Norman Regional. The game, televised nationally on ESPN, was commanding a large audience on that May 22 Saturday afternoon. The sport itself was enjoying a surge in popularity nationally, and the Sooners were arguably America’s Team. People either loved them or loved to hate them. The OU Softball complex was packed and exploding with excitement. WSU was a significant underdog having lost to these same Sooners in an ugly 14-3 five-inning run-rule game at home 18 days early. Nevertheless, in this particular game, in the early innings, Wichita State was holding its own. Up stepped Ryleigh Buck, a fifth-year senior, to the plate.  Angie DeFrenchiAngie (Cornejo) DeFrenchi died Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at Wellington Health and Rehab in Wellington at the age of 72.She was born the daughter of Antonio and Carmen (Esparza) Cornejo on April 12, 1949, in Wellington.
