9712 Residence

Project Location:
Leawood, Kansas

Completion Date:
Winter 2018

Project Description:
This traditional Leawood ranch needed some cosmetic updates when our clients purchased it. Most of the walls were covered with wood paneling or wainscoating and painted in some pretty dated colors. By eliminating the walls between the entry, kitchen, dining and formal living room, we were able to open up the floor plan to create much more usable spaces. Our clients plan to add a second floor to this home in a few years as their family grows. We were able to plan for this by over-sizing the ceiling joists which should help minimize the construction impact on this remodel in the future. All of the cabinets and casework were designed, fabricated and installed by our team of designers and craftsmen.

1001 Residence

Project Location:
Kansas City, Missouri (Brookside)

Completion Date:
Winter 2017

Project Description:
This house is full of ornate details that our clients wanted to preserve as best as possible. Most of early 20th century homes all suffer from the same problems. The kitchens tend to be small which makes it difficult for people to entertain a group of friends without segregating the group. The main design objective was to figure out a way to enlarge this kitchen without destroying the integrity of the home. We added some upset beams which allowed some load bearing walls to be removed. We also absorbed the secondary dining room and relocated the powder room to allow for a larger, more efficient kitchen. The massive island has storage on both sides and provides a ton of prep space. Our design team worked with local artist, Jennifer Walker, to replicate the dimensional plaster crown molding as well as the new archway into the kitchen from the dining room. She also integrated a few small portraits of the clients doberman into the wall finish.

The secondary design objective was to figure out a way to add closet storage to the master bedroom. We considered enclosing the roof top patio to create a walk-in closet but ultimately decided to carve some space out of the existing bedroom room instead.

All of the cabinets and built'-in’s are completely custom and were fabricated and installed locally by our team here in Kansas City.

Landrock Signature Homes

Project Description:
At the 1600 residence we were presented with a few challenges. Creating a new more organized entry, relieving the congested area around the stairs, providing an exterior deck off of the living room, and creating a modern functional solution for the kitchen and dining rooms is what influenced this design solution. We decided to leave the roof line alone while reworking the space below it to accommodate the new entry sequence. Moving the kitchen to the east side of the house allowed for a more usable spaces. The storage wall on the south side of the kitchen provides some privacy from the front door while also providing function solutions for the kitchen and entry.

3008 Kitchen

Project Location:
Kansas City, MO

Completion Date:
September 2017

Project Description:
Everyone knows that the party always ends up in the kitchen. So why not have a kitchen that was designed for the party! Although the old kitchen looked nice, it did not function well. It was too small to have two people cooking at the same time. In addition, the microwave was dangerously close to the cooktop - making it virtually impossible to stir and move hot pots on and off the cooktop.

To achieve our clients’ goal, we removed the existing built-in pantry and added two new windows. By doing this we were able to bring additional natural light into the space and open up an area for the coffee bar. The coffee bar houses the coffee pot during the day, but by night it can be transformed into a wet bar making it a great place to mix cocktails. The coffee bar is anchored with an integrated Sub Zero refrigerator on the left and a large pantry cabinet on the right. Behind the island, the 48” Wolf range is the life of the party. The range is accented by a 3D tile back-splash and under cabinet lighting. We installed a pot filler on the wall above the range, which makes filling large pots a breeze. The range is flanked by large walnut pantry cabinets that contain pull-out drawers for easy access. We hid the range hood in the colored accent cabinets above the range. Finally, we replaced the duel-level island with a large single level quartz island with waterfall ends, which houses an integrated Asko dishwasher and a pull-out trash drawer. Three 18" diameter George Kovacs pendents illuminate the room and adjacent surfaces. The storage cabinets on the right of the range not only serves home for the alcohol collection but easily transforms into a serving buffet when it is party time!

Project Description:
This retail display is located in the Made In KC Marketplace at the Country Club Plaza. We worked closely with Christopher Elbow Chocolates to prototype these retail displays for product display flexibility. This modern home originally built by Sam Symons in the late 50's had some great mid century bones. The clients approached us with the task of breathing some new life in the home.

We removed a wall of cabinets that dividing the kitchen from the rest of the first floor which allows for a much nicer flow. We also added a mudroom and reconfigured the master closet to allow for a larger, more usable master bathroom. The kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanity were designed + fabricated by our team. We selected mahogany veneered plywood for the new casework to match the existing doors and wood trim in the house.

6000 Residence

Project Location:
Fairway, Kansas

Project Description:
The main design strategy for the 6000 Residence was to relocate the Master Bedroom. The existing layout had two sets of stairs on opposite ends of the home and an odd second story attic bedroom that needed some attention. We decided to remove and redesign the center portion of the home leaving the bedroom wing and the garage untouched. By centralizing the circulation and eliminating the second stair, we were able to expand the kitchen and remove the walls dividing it from the living room and dining room. The Master Suite was relocated to the second floor to take advantage of the sight lines of the lot. This home is filled with custom cabinetry and components that were all designed, fabricated and installed by our team.

Shelby Herrick Salon

Project Location:
Westwood, KS

Completion Date:
2017

Project Description:
The Shelby Herrick Salon is located on the ground floor of the newly constructed Woodside Village Apartments. The original space was tall and narrow so it was our goal to bring the scale of the volume down to a more human and intimate scale. An angular ceiling greets the customer at the front door and undulates all the way to the back of the space where it folds to form the second floor mezzanine. A series of coves around the ceilings make them appear as if they float above your head. The blackened steel rod sculptural elements help screen the activities behind while allowing natural light to filter through. The sculptures sway with the movements of the salon and evoke a sense of taming loose strands into an ordered pattern. The left side of the space houses the serene and calming spaces which are painted blue and tucked under a lower ceiling. The custom black stained white oak cabinets were also designed, fabricated and installed by Studio Build.

Studio Build Office

Project Location:
Kansas City, MO

Completion Date:
2015

Project Description:
From 2008 - 2012 we moved our office and shop to various locations around Kansas City. We finally settled into a building located in the heart of the crossroads arts district of Kansas City. Three of us shared an 10' x 12' wood paneled office that hadn't been touched since the early 80's. In February of 2015, we decided that we wanted to stay here rather than move again. This office solution is the result of many hours of dedication and hard work by our entire staff. Over the last 20 months we slowly added components and are pretty excited to share the final product. A 5' x 24' shared work-space allows our team to collaborate; the 11' x 11' partitions provide ample storage for awards, books and material samples;we designed, fabricated and installed 30' of custom cabinetry that showcases our style of kitchen casework as well as provides additional storage. Last but certainly not least, the custom ping pong table encourages friendly competition with all of our neighbors during friday happy hours.

Drummond 7835

Project Location:
Prairie Village, KS

Completion Date:

Project Description:
Drummond 7835 was in need of a bit of a modern revival to fit the open nature of the house. The configuration is relatively the same.We removed the wall separating the kitchen from the living room allowing the homeowner to take advantage of the wonderful light and visual connection to the back yard. The casework was fabricated at our studio here in Kansas City and is constructed of walnut veneered plywood accented with lime and blue fronts. The utility room was further defined by adding a which also allowed the new kitchen to gain some full height pantry storage.

As many of you may know, Studio Build is quite fond of the mid-century Drummond's around Kansas City. Most of the casework was fabricated and pre-finished in our shop, some of it was fabricated on site. The most unique aspect of this Drummond is the basement that was added during this renovation. 20' was added to the length of the house, transforming it from a small 2 bedroom 1 bath into a comfortable 4 bedroom 3 bath home.

Runnells Residence

Project Location:
Kansas City, MO

Completion Date:
2014

Project Description:
Studio Build was approached with the task of updating the kitchen in this original 1950's post and beam modern home located in South Kansas City. The original house was designed by local Architect David Runnells and advertised as the All Climate Housein the May 1950 issue of House Beautiful Magazine.

A relatively small addition (120 square feet) enabled the house and existing garage to be connected and the entry to be moved to the front of the house, while allowing the floor plan to be open for a much larger kitchen. Matching the existing construction techniques helps the addition seamlessly blend into the existing home. Studio Build was fortunate to be able to design + fabricate all of the custom casework which is a walnut plywood with white grey accents.
