Appointment of STM China Consultant

Dr. Shuai Yan, an independent consultant has joined STM as our China Consultant. Shuai possesses extensive experience and knowledge of the scholarly communications ecosystem which will be utilised in his newly created role to support STM’s policy and advocacy work across China. Shaui graduated from Beijing Forestry University (BFU) in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in forestry economics and management and was awarded a PhD in management from BFU in 2003. Prior to joining STM, he worked with Springer Nature Greater China as its Director of Academic Relations (including government relations). Shuai has served as the President of Society of China University Journals (CUJS) from 2004 to 2019, the Vice President of China Periodicals Association from 2012 to 2018 and the Vice President of the China Editology Society for Scientific Periodicals from 2015 to June 2021.

Working Group on Image Alterations and Duplications best-practice recommendations

The STM Working Group has been developing best-practice recommendations that outline a structured approach to support editors and others applying image integrity screening as part of pre-publication quality control checks or post-publication investigation of image and data integrity issues at scholarly journals, books, preprint servers, or data repositories.

The recommendations are open for comments until October 31st. The final recommendations, in which we will attempt to process all suggestions and recommendation, will be presented at the STM Innovations Seminar on December 7th.

Passing of Dr Keith Howard OBE

Dr Keith Howard OBE, Emerald’s founder and owner, has sadly died peacefully at home at the age of 89. Dr Howard formed Emerald back in 1967 with a group of academic colleagues from the University of Bradford. Read the official announcement

STM response to UKRI Open Access Policy

STM has issued a response to the newly published UKRI Open Access Policy. The response notes the positives contained within the document, but raises significant concerns that the policy will ultimately stand to harm the integrity of the scholarly record and constrain researchers’ freedom to choose the most appropriate outlet for the publication of their work.
