Even a procedure called cosmetic genitoplasty, which usually includes alterations in the labia majora or labia minora has become a growing trend among women in the past few years.

It is, however, important to note that these cosmetic changes does not come without pain. While death and other serious complications are very rare, the pain caused by these surgical procedures can be severe, particularly during the initial few days following the surgery.

Another factor to consider about these cosmetic procedures is the associated cost. It is estimated that Americans spent about $11.5 million in 2006 for cosmetic surgery procedures. During the same year, the estimated average cost to cover for surgeon’s fee for breast augmentation was about $3,600. Liposuction averaged $3,000 and tummy tucks, $5,000. Add the cost for hospital fees, anesthesia and other incidental fees and the price tags increase considerably.

For a breast augmentation procedure using saline implants, some prominent surgeons charge about $8,000. Silicone implants add another $1,000 to the price tag.

The results of plastic surgery are not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes, no matter how experienced the plastic surgeon is, patients still encounter unsatisfactory plastic surgery results. Some people tolerate pain differently so recovery time is relatively longer and more complicated with them.

Scarring and Keloid Formation

Scars and keloids are harmless, but they can be aesthetically disfiguring. Scars can appear hyperpigmented if the scabs are picked or if the healing area is scratched or exposed to sunlight. Keloids are raised scars that genetically occur on some people. If the keloid is severe, another cosmetic procedure is required to remove them.

Nerve Damage

In rare cases, the anesthesia didn’t react well with the patient’s system, resulting to nerve damage. Or worse, the surgeon has damaged a crucial nerve system in the patient’s body.

Numbness

Numbness is another effect of nerve damage. Numbness is common among 10% to 70% of breast lift patients in which the nipple tissue is totally removed and reattached as skin grafts on a higher breast location.

Necrosis

Sometimes, nerve damage can be severe that tissue death or necrosis occurs. It can also be caused when the blood supply to that area has been compromised. Necrosis is worsened if the patient smokes.

Anesthesia Complications

People have different reaction to anesthesia. Some may seem resistant to it and some may feel the effects of anesthesia for days. Those with allergic reactions to one or more chemical component of the anesthesia will experience internal blood clots, pneumonia and even death.

Bleeding

Mild bleeding is normal for freshly closed wounds. But if bleeding lasts for more than 24 hours, then it’s time to call your surgeon and physician. Those who have undergone plastic surgery should refrain from strenuous physical activities to avoid accidentally opening up the wound.

Infection

Infection occurs when the incised area started to develop pus. Always apply a prescribed antibacterial cream and keep the area dressed or bandaged if you’re going outdoors. Also refrain from soaping while the wound is still fresh. The cases of infection among plastic surgery patients are low, but when infection occurs, it spreads quickly on the area.

Seroma

Seroma occurs when there is an excess accumulation of water or bodily fluids under the skin even after the recovery time. This risk is common among tummy tuck patients that even some doctors insert a drain tube during surgery.
