An Important Message from our Band DirectorJames RumenappGreetings Buena Music Families,We are in trying times, each day is as frustrating as the lastand while it may not seem like there is much stabilityin our economy and government, the staff and I want to bring as much normalcy as possibleto you.Asyou might be aware, sports practices are beginning summer practices after July 20th, however this might change based off of the governor’s recent change in protocol on Monday, July 13th. Below are some of the updates as they pertain to our re-opening procedures. The phases are based off of CIF guidelines for athletics.Marching Band andColorguard:•Both WBA and SCSBOA have recently canceled their field championships for the fall. More information will be coming this week on individual SCSBOA shows, but it is looking like most events will not be as normal.•Band campat this time will beshortened, or altogether cancelled– please keep posted for information on this as time develops. OurJuly 27th-July31st Camp is cancelled. Afternoon and evening rehearsal blocks will also be shortened. These dates and times are subject to change•Currently, we are in “Phase 1” and students may only rehearse in “cohorts” limited to 10 students per staff member. Students and staff may not be in contact with another cohortwhile in rehearsal. There are many, many additional limitations to promote safety, details to come in the next few weeks.•“Phase 2” increases the cohort size to 50 students with a few staff.•“Phase 3” increases the cohort size to 70 students with staff.•“Phase 4” is our back to normal with no limitations. Basically, life before March 13, 2020.•Obviously, the cohort size limitations constrict our traditional fullmarching bandexperiences. However, the staff and Iarebrainstorming ways to provide a highly educational marching experience that stays within the phase 1/2/3 health guidelines. In summary, marchingseason will start in smaller 10 person groups or “cohorts” with guard, pit, battery, and smaller wind pods – then move to medium (50) and larger (70) member ensemble experiences as the phases change in our county. However, all of this might be changed based off of the most recent Governor’s announcement (7/13/20)•Travel is undetermined at this time.•Home football games are undetermined at this time.•Saturday rehearsals are unlikely at this time.•Bulldog Pack Donations will be lower than they have in the past. However, we will be relying on our paid staff to teach these cohorts and desperately need your donations. Details on amounts to comein the coming weeks.•We are looking formarching band rehearsalsto be on campus for two hours two days a week - which days have not yet been decided(this might change pending approvals). We will be discussing marching band history, visual design concepts, programming, sound design, drum corps, college marching bands, arranging, drill writing, and more during a weekly1 hourzoom.I am looking into the possibility of hosting guest speakers during these zoom conferences as well.•With time and safety being priority, ouridealgoal would be having theentire marching bandperformat least1 movement of a more “traditional”marching bandexperience by the end of Novemberon the field, in performance. Thisof coursewill be determined by which health phase we are in.ANew WorldAs we jump feet first into this new era of music education, our primary focus will be on the safety of our students and staff. We will not be taking any unnecessary risks. This is an opportunity for us to explore aspects of the marching arts that we normally don’t have the time to do in a “regular” season and while it will look different at first, our goal is to keep the activity engaging, exciting, and still momentous even in this age ofCovid. I am grateful for the continued support that this communitytirelesslyprovidesto the Buena Music Association andIlook forward to working with all of you in the coming year!A brief overview of the Not-so-Silent Night, Vol. 4 CD Project, at Buena High School in Ventura, CA, available for digital download on the following digital retailers:- iTunes- Amazon- Google Play Store- CD Baby StoreThank you for supporting the arts in public schools!Download our Not-so-Silent Night, Vol. 4 CD on the following platforms: Make a DifferenceMusic programs cost more than $160,000.
