Solar activity was very low with B-class flare activity on 11-12, and 15-17 Oct. Low levels of solar activity were observed on 13-14 Oct due to C-class flare activity. Region 2885 (N15, L=171, class/area=Cro/20 on 13 Oct) produced three C-class flares this period: a C1/Sf flare at 13/2204 UTC, a C2 flare at 14/0134 UTC, and a C1flare at 14/0304 UTC.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period.
Geomagnetic field activity reached G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels on 12 Oct due to the passage of a CME from 09 Oct. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 17 Oct, also due to the passage of a transient feature. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 11, 13, and16 Oct, while quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 October - 13 November 2021
Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26-28 Oct. Normal to moderate flux levels are expected to continue.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 18-19 Oct, and 06 Nov due to the influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be mostly quiet or quiet to unsettled.

Monday, October 11, 2021 Monitoring the Mini Transat yacht race

(photo Wikipedia)

Heard the broadcast from Issoudun for the Mini Transat yacht race today

(11 Oct) at 1500 UTC on 13735 kHz. Similar format to the transmission I heard for the race in August 2020 which was only in French waters due to Covid. SIO 353

1501 UTC music followed by a man in French (mentioning La Palma and Novembre). 1503: Lady in English with French accent with the weather (meteo) forecast for today 11th October until 1508 then music.

Silence until 1515 then OM in French again. Off at 1530 UTC recheck.

On 13735 again from 1600 UTC, but in DRM.

This time the race is from France via La Palma (Canary Islands) to Guadeloupe = 4050 nautical miles. It started in France 26 September.

Arriving in La Palma from 3rd October. Departing La Palma 29th October, arriving in Guadeloupe from 9th November. See:

https://www.minitransat.fr/en/

There's also a Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/LaMiniTransat

13735 kHz is only registered on HFCC until 29th October 2021. Unsure if broadcasts are daily (or only if yachts are still at sea? They're arriving in Santa Cruz de La Palma today re the Facebook page)

Region 2882 (N17, L=157, class/area=Dho/280 on 09 Oct) produced the majority of the C-class flare activity in addition to the largest event of the period, an M1/2b flare (with Type-II and IV radio emissions) at 09/0638 UTC. An associated full-halo CME signature was observed in LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 09/0712 UTC and is likely to arrive at Earth around midday on 11 Oct.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal and normal to moderate levels throughout the period.
Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 07-09 Oct, quiet to unsettled on 04-06 Oct, and quiet to active on 10 Oct.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 11 October - 06 November 2021
Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 20-21 Oct. Normal and normal to moderate levels are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.
Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels on 11 Oct, and G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 12 Oct, due to the anticipated arrival of a full-halo CME from 09 Oct. Active conditions are expected on 19 Oct due to the influence of a recurrent positive polarity CH HSS. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. WBCQ begins new program, Cruisin Radio

Cruisin Radios Arthur Burton and WBCQs Allan Weiner are both people with a long reputation of being pirates at some time in their past, albeit on different sides of the pond, and in Arthurs case even present, so when two pirates join together does that make Maines WCBQ Short Wave now a sort of super pirate?
Starting on 1 October, Cruisin Radio will be doing weekly hour broadcasts every Friday initially, for two months at 2300 UTC on 6160 kHz, that will be 7pm EDT and 12 Midnight in the UK during October, but that changes when those times go back an hour when the clocks change at the end of October.
Cruisin Radio is an Internet station of some years standing, started and run by Arthur Burton, a pirate of many decades experience, going back to the 1970s when he started on Radio Jackie and later Sun Radio London. He was on Nova Italy, RFL, and appeared on the shipborne Radio Caroline in the '80s. Cruisin Radio thrives on quality in both music and presentation and is on the net 24/7 as well as Short Wave at times. E-QSLs will be available by going to the Cruisin Radio contact page:http://www.cruisinradio.net/contact.htm(via Alan Roe/BDXC)(BDXC/October DX News-Short Wave by Dave Kenny) Wednesday, October 06, 2021 Scandinavian Weekend Radio returns in October

Weekly Propagation Forecast Bulletins

Product: Weekly Highlights and Forecasts:Issued: 2021 Oct 04 0141 UTC# Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center# Product description and SWPC web contact www.swpc.noaa.gov/content/subscription-services## Weekly Highlights and Forecasts#Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 September - 03 October 2021
Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Low levels were reached on 28 Sep - 01 Oct and 02-03 Oct. Region 2877 (S18, L=327, Class/Area Dao/200 on 30 Sep) produced the strongest flare of the period, a C2/Sn at 29/2156 UTC. Other activity included a C1 flare at 28/0634 UTC. Associated with the flare was a Type II radio sweep (534 km/s) and an partial-halo CME signature first seen in SOHO/LASCO imagery around 28/0634 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested onset at Earth late on 30 Sep - 01 Oct. The region produced two more low-level, impulsive, C-class flares before rotating around the SW limb on 03 Oct. Associated with the final C-flare was a Tenflare of 100 sfu at 03/0523 UTC. The remaining numbered active regions on the visible disk were relatively quietand stable.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active conditions. Active conditions were observed 30 Sep and 01-02 Oct in response to the arrival of a CME that left the Sun on 28 Sep. Total field peaked at 14 nT around 30/1820 UTC. The onset of the magnetic cloud was observed after 01/1305 UTC and the Bz component was predominantly positive over the next 18 hours. Solar wind speeds began increasing from ~380 km/s midway through 30 Sep and peaked at ~560 km/s at 01/0120 UTC before gradually decreasing towards nominal levels over the next two days. Unsettled conditions were observed on 27-28 Sep due to influence from a positive polarity CH HSS. The remainder of the summary period was at quiet levels.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 October - 30 October 2021
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a chance for C-class flares over 04-10 Oct.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate to high levels. High levels are likely on 20-21 Oct in response to recurrent coronal hole influence. The remainder of the outlook period is likely to be at normal to moderate levels.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Active levels are likely 19 Oct and unsettled levels are likely on 05-06 Oct, 08-09 Oct, 18 Oct, 20-21 Oct, and 25 Oct. All increases in geomagnetic activity are in response to anticipated influence from multiple, recurrent, CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be quiet.
