Description:

You feel like you have a pretty good handle on your iPhone these days. So what is the deal with those green and orange dots? They weren t there before, and now, you see them everywhere. Sorry to say you can t stop these dots from appearing, but when you know why they are there, you might just want to keep them around. The Music app for iPhone underwent a significant update back in iOS 8.4 when the Apple Music subscription service was incorporated into the user interface. It then had another transformation in iOS 10 that improved the UI for everyone. But things can still feel a little cluttered in Music, even in iOS 14, especially if you don t or never will subscribe to Apple Music. In the tech world, our data is always under attack. When you download and install a new app, it can be difficult to know what information the app is actually accessing. Thankfully, a new emphasis on privacy in iOS 14 changes the game, exposing more of what your apps want access to — and even changing some behavior along the way. Apple released the first beta for iOS 14.2 to iPhone developers today, Thursday, Sept. 17. The major new feature that iOS 14.2 brings to the table is a new Control Center tile for Shazam music recognition. A simple tap of the tile will launch iOS built-in Shazam capabilities, scanning for music playing in the immediate area. As cool as iOS 14 is, it isn t without bugs. One of those bugs just happens to affect one of its coolest features — choosing default browser and mail apps. When you reboot your iPhone, iOS will reset your default apps back to Apple s defaults, Safari and Mail. Not ideal. However, there is a workaround that will stop you from having to choose default apps over and over again manually. For the longest time, we were simply stuck with Safari on the iPhone. Sure, you could install a third-party browser, but Safari was always the default, so tapping on links would always open Apple s app. Times have changed, however, and now you can set third-party browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge as your iPhone s default choice. One of the most significant changes in iOS 14 is something we ve wanted for a very long time, and it will change the way you use your iPhone. Since the very first iPhone OS 1 (yes, before it was even iOS ), we ve been stuck with Apple Mail as the default emailing app. That all changes now. Apple s iOS 14 is here. With it, you ll see over 200 new features and changes hit your iPhone, including home screen widgets, inline replies in Messages, and cycling routes in Maps. Here s how you can get your hands on the brand new update. Apple s latest iPhone update, iOS 14, is finally here. It might not be all good news, however. Home screen widgets, App Clips, and a revamped Messages app might not be worth it if the software itself is a buggy mess. If you re finding iOS 14 too problematic right now, you can still downgrade your iPhone back to iOS 13.7. The new iOS 14 for iPhone arrived Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2020, alongside iPadOS 14, and there are a lot of features to uncover. Improved widgets. Better home screen customization. Exciting Messages improvements. New abilities in Camera and Photos. There s so much here that it ll take months for you to learn everything by heart. Since iOS 9, the iPad has had Picture in Picture mode, which lets you minimize a video that you re watching into a floating overlay so that you can multitask in other apps while it plays. But while there have been six Plus and Max size models over the years, the iPhone had never featured PiP windows — until now. Apple just pushed out iOS 14 to everyone on Sept. 16, but you may not want to jump right into updating your iPhone. If you have Automatic Updates turned on, you may want to turn it off real quick before it tries to download and install iOS 14 before you re ready. Have you ever watched a video on your iPhone but wanted to look at something else real quick? In past iOS versions, you had to choose between pausing the video or waiting until it s over — not exactly ideal for a device that s supposed to help you multitask. Well, iOS 14 just fixed it, giving us picture-in-picture mode to watch and perform other on-screen tasks at the same time. Chief among iOS 14 s excellent new features is the overhauled home screen. Now, you can add customizable widgets that live alongside your traditional apps, and both first-party and third-party apps can take advantage of it. Talk about an upgrade. They even work in the Today View and lock screen, so you can have the reinvented widgets for one or the other — or both. Even though the Music app took a backseat during Apple s initial iOS 14 announcements, there s a lot going on in the updated app. Some of the new features and changes apply only to Apple Music subscribers, while others apply to your own music library, so there s something for everyone. Directing a message at a specific person in a group conversation, or to a select few people in the group, can be difficult if you re in a particularly active or hectic chat. Notifications and badges on your iPhone can help you keep track of important messages, but it s still easy to miss one meant for you and not the entire group — which is why you can now mention contacts, or get tagged, in Messages on iOS 14. Widgets have been available on the iPhone for a while now, but they were tucked away in the Today View or hidden in the quick actions menu for app icons on the home screen. Android had always had a leg up on Apple in the widget department because they were so much more versatile, but that changed with the introduction of iOS 14. Wallpapers are always an exciting addition to any major software update. Apple s iOS 14 introduces three fresh wallpapers for your iPhone, each of which has a light and dark version. You can get these awesome wallpapers right now without iOS 14, whether you have an iPhone or an Android device. Apple just seeded developers and public beta testers the GM (golden master) for iOS 14 on Tuesday, Sept 15. The update (18A373) comes just after Apple s Time Flies event, and six days after Apple released iOS 14 beta 8 for both developers and public testers. If you re on a cellular plan with a low data allotment, being thrifty with your data can help you avoid a higher bill. But even if you have an affordable unlimited plan from wireless carriers such as T-Mobile or Verizon, going over a certain amount of data may throttle your connection, leaving you with slow web speeds. One way to prevent hitting these thresholds is to keep certain apps in check. Between sending iMessages, jotting down notes, and crafting emails, you do a lot of typing on your iPhone. No doubt, you ve been in the middle of an important task when everything comes to a screeching, obtrusive halt, where a rogue Undo Typing pop-up forces you to close it before continuing with your typing. Don t put up with the BS anymore — here s how to stop it. These days, most images we post online or share with others come from our smartphones. Whenever there is any personal data in them, such as debit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and other sensitive information, it s easy to jump into your iPhone s markup tools to black out the text before sharing. But using a digital marker may not be enough to hide everything. There have been third-party iOS apps for live conversation translations, and Google Assistant pushed out its own feature for iPhone last year. Still, iOS 14 now has a default translator for real-time multi-language talks in person. So you can finally chat with people who use a different language without missing anything or having to install any complicated apps on your device. One of iOS 14 s best new features is the ability to add and stack widgets on your home screen, which lets you check in with your favorite apps without actually needing to open them. Apple takes the concept one step further with Smart Stacks, where iOS intelligently stacks widgets together based on how you use your iPhone. One thing that always bugged me about the Notes app for iPhone is that every note starts with Big, Bold Text. Relevant in some cases, sure, but most of the time, I m just trying to jot down some thoughts, and having one giant sentence is just unnecessary. Luckily, it s not that hard to fix. Let s say that the screen on your iPhone is showing signs of discoloration, which makes the display annoying to use. You ll need a replacement display or a new iPhone as soon as possible. If you have one of the newer iPhone models, the cost to fix it might be more than your wallet can handle, but a warranty may still cover it, and there are ways to check quickly. We hardly need to buy anything these days since games, music, books, news, movies, and TV are all available on the iPhone with various monthly subscriptions. Just set it and forget it so that your wallet does all the work for you. But if you re on a free trial or two and don t want to commit, you might get an unexpected charge if you forgot or don t know where to cancel. Here s how to avoid that. According to Apple, Siri serves 25 billion requests per month — an enormous number for a feature that was only released nine years ago. But when you think about how much work Apple has put into Siri over the years, it makes sense that the virtual assistant is being used more and more by users with iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, AirPods, and HomePod. Apple just released the eighth public beta for iOS 14 today, Wednesday, Sept. 9. At this time, beta 8 (18A5373a) seems to be a minor update to iOS 14, introducing bug fixes to improve the software s overall stability. Apple just released the eighth developer beta for iOS 14 today, Wednesday, Sept. 9. Beta 8 (18A5373a) appears to be a minor update offering bug fixes to improve overall stability. For the past five years, Apple has been hosting live media events in September to reveal new Apple products and the stable release for its latest operating systems. This year is no different, and it has a Sept. 15 date, but it may not be the only event coming up before the end of 2020. Your iPhone s almost out of battery power, there s no wired or wireless charger in sight, and you left your portable power bank at home. You don t want your battery to die, but you still need to use your iPhone. This is when Low Power Mode comes in handy, but you could be wasting valuable time and power if you re activating it the wrong way. Apple just released iOS 14 public beta 7 for iPhone today, Thursday, Sept. 3, and features new dark mode wallpaper options. Choose from any of the rainbow wallpaper s color backgrounds, and iOS will automatically shift the background to black when you enable dark mode. You might be giving out your name to every stranger you see, and you don t even know it. That iPhone of yours has a name — generally a combination of your first name and device model — and it broadcasts it to others via AirDrop, Personal Hotspot, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other connections. Sure, it s useful to keep your device name simple and to the point, but there are upsides to changing it. Apple just released iOS 14 developer beta 7 for iPhone today, Thursday, Sept. 3. The new update (18A5369b) features new wallpaper options. Now, you can choose any color background for the rainbow wallpaper, and iOS will turn the background black when you enable dark mode. You might be using Zoom on your iMac, playing a Steam game on your MacBook, or completing a work assignment on your iPad, when suddenly you get a phone call on your iPhone. If the same Apple ID is used on all of your Apple devices, the call won t ring on your iPhone only — it ll ring on every damned device. Battery management is a never-ending struggle. To be on the safe side, you likely won t want to leave your home with less than 100% battery, but continually checking your charging iPhone is a hassle. Instead of continuously monitoring your battery s power level, have your iPhone tell you when it s reached a full charge. Enter a password into a password field, and it s a sure bet that black dots or asterisks will obscure the characters. Nearly every website you visit in Safari on your iPhone will do it, but sometimes it helps to see what you re typing or what was auto-filled with iCloud Keychain, LastPass, or a different password manager. What started as an accessibility setting for hearing aids turned out to be a super useful tool for anyone with a good set of Bluetooth headphones. The problem is that most iPhone users still don t know about it. If you re one of them, you need to see what this underrated gem in iOS can offer you. Since iOS 6, Respond with Text has allowed us to quickly respond to a call we can t (or don t want to) answer. But Apple only gives you three options to choose from, and if you don t have time to type out your own response, those three might not cut it. Luckily, you can customize these three replies to whatever you want.
