Its initial goal to provide key facts on population dynamics for 200 major commercial species has now grown to have a wide range of information on all species currently known in the world: taxonomy, biology, trophic ecology, life history, and uses, as well as historical data reaching back to 250 years. At present, FishBase covers 33,000 fish species compiled from 52,000 references in partnership with 2,000 collaborators: 300,000 common names and 55,000 pictures.SAS Language Portal includes three tools: Terminology Search, Translation Search and Domain Glossaries. SAS is a collection of localization-related text materials developed by SAS, and based on localization-related activities at SAS. It comprises a Term Seach tool, which utilizes term data from the SAS Localization Termbank, a Translation Search tool, which is based on a set of translation memory repositories maintained by the SAS European Localization Centre, and a set of bilingual glossaries that are also generated from term data in the SAS Localization Termbank. Moreover, the task of establishing a terminology collaboration can be a handful, which comes in addition to the terminology work of termbase management and maintenance, terminology research and term creation, etc. Getting to the point of prioritising and involving terminology collaboration in the terminology working process is, therefore, getting far!In this post, I will give you my idea of how to proceed based on my experience, especially with the establishment of the Danish Terminology Network (Termnetværket EU-DK), assuming that you have your approval from management to start establishing the collaboration at this point.It is, however, important to mention that asking for a budget for its creation and/or for expert involvement might be a good idea in the stage of approval. Terminology in Patricia’s terms is written in a way that makes terminology understandable to everyone and it helped me a lot to consolidate the knowledge that I had acquired during TSS 2018.Terminology networking, expert involvement and terminology collaboration is already a well-established and well-founded principle and even recommended in the Terminology World.Like in any human relation, talking together is a good idea, and in the Terminology World it seems that there is consensus around establishing a dialogue with the terminology creators – the creators of new terminology, users – everyone using the terminology – and experts of the field; in other words, the people who know about the terminology that you, as a terminologist, are dealing with.The rationale behind this is that we, as terminologists, are rarely subject-matter experts within the field in which we are working, or at least within all the fields that we are working. We can moreover be further or closer to the material that we are working on and, just as any other language, professional language is alive and develops along with new inventions, technology, etc.Our role as terminologists is to be the mediators between professionals and lay people, and what we are trying to do is cracking the code of the language and the terms used, which can be professional and/or common language.
