The GEAR Network is funded by a $5M grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Research Networks in Mathematical Sciences (RNMS) program. The acronym GEAR stands for GEometric structures And Representation varieties and reflects the mathematical focus of the network (described here).  The GEAR Network brings together researchers from over 90 nodes at mathematics centers throughout the world (see map). Its goal is to promote research interactions between network members, to facilitate cross-pollination of ideas between different research communities, and to train students andresearchers to cross traditional mathematical boundaries.

COVID-19

Lock-down and travel restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic are currently making it impossible for the remaining GEAR programs (i.e. Short-Term Visits and Graduate Internships) to function. We are hopeful that we will be able to resurrect these programs, but until then please visit our Events page to see a list of virtual/online research activities of interest to the GEAR community.

GEARtown is a new virtual space where GEAR members can meet and mingle. GEARtown is open 24/7.
