The LGBTQ+ Caucus at Virginia Tech and The Lyric Theatre of Blacksburg are proud to present Daniel Karslake's 2019 documentary "For They Know Not What They Do" virtually throughout the month of September. Virtual tickets are $10 and half of all proceeds go DIRECTLY to the Lyric. Please support the Caucus and the Lyric Theatre by watching this incredible film.A complimentary film to the popular "For The Bible Tells Me So," Karslake's new film explores the intersection of religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity in America. With particular emphasis on the right's new state-by-state campaign to limit the rights of LGBTQ+ and trans* citizens across the United States in the wake of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case legalizing marriage equality, "For They Know Not What They Do" take us on a journey of understanding on what connects us all and gives us the strength to connect each other. Sep 10, 2020 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM This semester, the PPE Reading Group will discuss Candice Delmas' book, A Duty to Resist: When Disobedience Should Be Uncivil (2018). The book discusses our responsibilities as citizens in the face of injustice. Proponents of civil disobedience generally hold that a person needs a solid justification to break the law. However, activists from Henry David Thoreau and Mohandas Gandhi to the Movement for Black Lives have long recognized that there are times when, rather than having a duty to obey the law, we have a duty to disobey it. The PPE Reading Group is provisionally scheduled for every other Thursday, 4-5:30pm. We will decide about the most adequate format (in person, hybrid, or virtual) at the start of fall semester. For in person discussions, enjoy free pizza and soft drinks (if health considerations permit)! To join the group, please contact Gil Hersch. Sep 10, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM In-person, hybrid, or virtual (TBD) Virginia Tech has an active industrial hemp research and extension program, providing programming for enhancing Virginia's hemp production industry. Working closely with Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Industrial Hemp program, Virginia Tech seeks to provide research information and advancements and, in cooperation with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), facilitate the effective production and processing of hemp from Virginia. This integrated effort is principally led through the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES), and VCE. Virginia State University is actively engaged through VCE. Sep 10, 2020 6:00 PM - 11:59 PM
