I need to renew my US passport and I have my old Indefinite Remain To Leave visa in it, which is fine; however, I also have a Biometric Remain To Leave visa (I got it this March) and I was wondering, can I just use that upon returning to the UK and not worry if the old visa is put in the new passport? I think so, but I need clarification!

Thanks. 2 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 23rd-Nov-2014 11:00 am - Transatlantic plane ticketsyvesilenabrits_americansCould anyone confirm or deny that 1) someone in the US can buy plane tickets for someone in the UK, and 2) this works out significantly cheaper than the Brit buying them because of VAT?

Cheers ;) 5 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 6th-May-2014 03:36 pm - On Homesicknessagincourtgirlbrits_americansIt seems I only come back to LJ when I am in crisis; I wrote thispost this morning as I have had enough time and experience in London to recognize how out of place I feel most of the time, even though I have lived here for several years now. Just now I got a form rejection email from Oxfam, a place I have been a volunteer at for nearly 5 years - and I am seriously wondering if being a manager in their organization is just not going to happen, as I don't fit their idea of a manager somehow. The shop I applied for is a big one, the bookshop in Islington, and I can imagine they would want someone with tons of experience. But I applied for a much smaller shop and wasn't accepted for that either (though I did get an interview)...I must think about this carefully, as my book knowledge (which by now is extensive) is not something I want to just throw aside. But if Oxfam don't want me, who will? 10 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 27th-Oct-2013 03:01 pm - The Importance of Keeping Your Nose Clean as a Permanent Resident Alienbelle_marmottebrits_americansRan into this article today on the UK Guardian site www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/27/barack-obama-clemency-briton-deported-us
It's a cautionary tale for green card holders like myself. Although it's possibly wasn't the best idea to cross back into the US from Mexico with someone who is carrying drug paraphernalia and a dissembled gun in their car, all while declaring yourself to be an American, if you aren't one. I can't help but think the article is also missing some rather crucial information about his 'ill fated' attempt to return to the US on a different passport and his other jail time.
I'm guessing this guy isn't going to be allowed back into the US any time soon, wouldn't Andy Burnham have a better chance of getting his family to the UK instead? Still looks like he's done ok out of the NHS with new hearing aids and his op. I do feel sorry for his poor child though.
Thoughts? 11 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 15th-Oct-2013 03:42 pm - Yeah I'm the Taxman, and you're working for no one but me. [taxes]ashfaebrits_americansHello Brits argh, America) and because I earn jack squat I'm well under the threshhold where you need to pay anything. But I forgot that not needing to pay anything isn't equal to not needing to file, so now I've got ten years' worth of back taxes. Oh, joy.

I've looked through past posts on the subject and they were all pretty much what I'm going to ask here: where do I start? Is there anyone I can hire to help me figure this out, and if so, who? My dad told me to find someone who specializes in this sort of thing, but I imagine they're all used to dealing with people who make rather a lot of money as opposed to working part-time in a library.

But really, where do I start? I've never filed taxes before, my dad did them when I was living in the States and my husband does them for both of us here. I don't even know where to begin. Any advice at all would be helpful, or any stories anyone has about their own experiences with this. 13 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 27th-Aug-2013 02:11 pm - Facebookdustyfrobrits_americansIs there a facebook equivalent to this group? I feel like that's what all the kids are using these days.

I'm looking into moving back to England for good. It may take several years of going back and forth to renew visas, but when I compare my life there and my life here, life there seems like something I would enjoy more for the long term. There are things about the overall feel of my town here, trying to be all artsy and hippie fabulous, and willingness to do ridiculous things for causes (it's like Red Nose Day all the time here) but in terms of day to day life as a single person, I feel like I was able to keep myself occupied more in England, and had opportunities that are a lot more difficult to achieve on my own here. 3 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 3rd-Aug-2013 07:50 pm{no subject}thesilverymoonbrits_americansSo my UK visa finally came through! Ill be working on my masters degree in London starting in September.
Of course now I have to start thinking about packing and getting all of my finances in order, which brings me to a few questions:
1. How did you choose which bank you wanted to open your checking account with (theyre called current accounts in the uk, right)?
2. How common is it for places (especially ATMs) to accept credit cards that have the strip instead of the chip? I know I need to get a chip card eventually, but unless I can get a bank account before I move (and thus get a debit card) I might not have access to one for a few weeks.
3. Does anyone know of any sources other than Gumtree that are good for finding flats? I know Im going to need to have flatmates, and Id rather not go through a realtor if at all possible.
4. What are foods that you miss now that youre living on the other side of the pond?
5. What do you wish you had known or had done before you moved?

This will actually be my second time moving to London (I spent nine months there in university about five years ago), but this time its for a much longer period and I dont have the safety net of a study abroad organization to help me through it, so Im extra glad for any help you wonderful folks can offer! 27 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 15th-Jun-2013 10:18 am - Teleluminousmotionbrits_americansCould someone recommend a good website for UK tv show premieres? The ones I find through google, possibly due to me being in the US, are mostly about when US shows are premiering. 10 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 3rd-Jun-2013 03:20 pm - Scott and Baileyluminousmotionbrits_americansDoes anyone know where I can get the DVDs for season one of Scott and Bailey set up for Region 1(America)? 3 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 6th-May-2013 12:38 pm - Working Options [employment]moovelvetbrits_americansHi all, I recently started a new position where I work from home... since I can log in anywhere I feel like, an idea popped up that perhaps I could move abroad and work. I remember that England had something on the books about not being allowed to work independently, but technically I'd be telecommuting back to the US. Does anyone have experience with this? I haven't done much research since I just had this bright idea a short time ago. Plus, I much prefer to hear personal experience stories to reading laws.

Thanks! 28 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 10th-Apr-2013 04:28 pm - Tier 2 visa extension? [visas]meteoricpathbrits_americansHello fellow expats, I hope you can help me with my query. I am currently a US citizen in the UK on a Tier 2 general visa. My employer has asked if I can extend my contract for 4-5 months past my origional visa end date. I'd like to take her up on this offer but cannot find correct guidance on this issue on the UKBA site. The only information I could find is within the Tier 2 Policy Guidance (Version 12/2012), which states that in this case I need to make an extension application and the rules for when an extension would qualify (I meet all those stated). Well I am happy to do this but I cannot find an application form, instructions to apply, fees information, or anything that would be necessary (I assume) to actually make the application. I am running on a really tight timeline for this as my visa expires at the end of July and I have travel (within the EU) in June (holiday) and July (an international work conference), so would prefer to apply ASAP if I need to send my passport in (I assume I would need to do this). Any advice on where to get these forms, or from anyone who has been through this process and has a clue about how I can go about it, or any other such help, would be fantastic.
Thanks in advance! 4 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 28th-Jan-2013 01:15 am - Who to contact about UK spousal immigration help [immigration (to uk), marriage, moving to the uk, visas]snapes_mistressbrits_americansHi guys,

Hoping someone here can help. I'm an American with an English boyfriend. We have been together for six years, and hope to get married eventually. We currently live together in Japan, working as ESL teachers.

We'd like to settle down in the UK after we marry. However, as we all know, the new requirements to sponsor a foreign spouse are pretty crazy. I've read the government forms about the new requirements, filled out the survey the inquiry committee put out (the one someone posted about here a few months ago,) done all the internetting I can about it, all that jazz.

My boyfriend is going back to the UK to visit his family in April. He'll be there for about a month. While he's there, he'd like to try and speak to someone, face-to-face, who is truly in the know about the spousal immigration requirements. Someone who can assess our situation and tell us, honestly, if it's feasible for us to return to the UK as a married couple. But, we aren't sure whom he should ask about it.

Who should we contact? The US Embassy in London? His local MP?

He lives close enough to London to easily go there. (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.) Any idea which place we should contact about this? Thanks so much! 15 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 26th-Jan-2013 10:54 am - US citizen with UK ancestry - work visa? [employment, visas]zooropababybrits_americansHello folks!
I figured I'd post, since the UKBA website is less than helpful. I'm pursuing a job with a UK-based employer. It would be mainly US-based work (where I'm located now), but they prefer to hire people who have the ability to work out of the main offices in London, as well.

My background: I'm a US citizen, US passport holder. My grandmother was born in Hull, Yorkshire, but emigrated to the US before my father was born. He is a US citizen, like I am. My B.A. (from 2001) is from Liverpool; I had no visa issues getting permission to study for my three years.

When I applied for jobs in the Northwest in 2001 it was explained to me that I was not eligible to work in the UK based on ancestry, because it was my grandmother, not my grandfather.

The UKBA website now does not specify the sex of ancestor required - does anyone know if maternal line ancestry is acceptable now? And if so - which work visa would be required? 21 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 5th-Jan-2013 06:07 pm - K-1 visa from outside the country? (among other things) [immigration (to us), marriage, money, visas]acrossthelakebrits_americansHi all. I am a US citizen currently completing an MA degree in the UK with plans to move back to the US in September. The current plan is to begin the application process for a K-1 fiance visa for my other half within the next few weeks in the interest of saving some time on the process. However, I was wondering if anyone here knew a) if there are restrictions on whether you can begin the application process while living abroad and b) what those are. If worst comes to worst I can just have the paperwork sent to my family's address in the States and have them re-mail the documents to me in the UK, but does anyone know if that would be misrepresentation that I'd have to clarify it somehow as part of the process?

Another concern I have at the moment is whether I should be doing this at all until I have steady employment in the States which I can put down for financial sponsorship purposes. Between one thing and another I have a sizeable amount of money in stocks and bonds which I can access relatively easily, but I haven't found a lot of guidance on how much money is needed for your sponsorship to be accepted or for how long so I'm not sure if it would be enough in this case. Along similar lines, my family is okay with me moving back into the ancestral home until I have a job and my own place but obviously we'll want to get out of there and do our own thing when we're ready for that--are there any things I should know about when moving house with a guy who isn't a full citizen?

TL;DR: Should I begin applying for a K-1 fiance visa while living in England or wait till I'm back in the States? How much money do I need to be a financial sponsor? And is there anything I need to take into account if my partner and I moved house before his visa process was complete? 2 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag 22nd-Nov-2012 03:09 pm - Passport Renewal [passports]agincourtgirlbrits_americansFirst, I want to thank everyone who responded to my previous post on culture shock; I have since been to a couple of events where I've been welcomed by British people, praised even, so I feel a bit more comfortable here. Socializing seems to be the best way for me to fit in, and I am hoping to meet some fellow Americans soonish too (Happy Thanksgiving, btw!)

Now then - my passport needs to be renewed. It expired 2 1/2 years ago and I'm not sure if I can renew it by post or just do it here in London. The last time I renewed it I filled out a form, sent some money & photos and that was that, pretty much. Do I need to do more now? Any and all answers welcome, and thanks! 3 commentsSpeakLinkShareFlag Previous 15 EntriesTop of Page This page was loaded Oct 27th 2021, 8:01 am GMT.
