Description:

Itwas proposed that we should have another dancethis night and Blake and Perkins, a couple of youngfellows, both strangers in town, undertook to bemanagers.  We drank tea, a number of us, at Mr. CalebThaxter's, and, at about seven, went again to Mrs.Derby's hall, where a partition between two chambers had been taken down, which made it much moreconvenient than it was the night before.  There wereabout thirty gentlemen and forty ladies; about twentycouple could stand up at once, and the rest amusedthemselves either with conversation, or with playingcards.  Between two and three we broke up, and Iretired with our young ladies.  We sat about half anhour at Col'l Thaxter's, and I then went to bed. But anumber of the lads, after conducting their ladieshome, retained the music, and went a serenading allover the town till day-light.

Will the dance go on?

Hi, Folks.  I know I haven’t posted here in a long time.  I want the future to be clearer.  But all I see is a smoke-filled haze. I want the dance to resume.  But not necessarily to Zoom.  I realize that there are some attempts around the country to have dance events via Zoom.  This seems singularly unsatisfying to me.  I suppose if you go to the dance just to get mild exercise. you could do that at home in front of your computer.  That’s not the reason I dance.  For me, and I hope for you as well, the dance is a unique social event.  It’s a chance to meet and greet — to interact on the dance floor — not only with a partner, but (hopefully gracefully and elegantly,) with the entire assembly.  And we get to interact with live music as well!  And feel the energy and presence of one another.  It often feels magical to me.

So I don’t see myself leading a Zoom event.  It seems somehow, a little desperate.  I don’t like the feeling of desperate.  Maybe I’m too much of an optimist, but I expect the desperate haze over our lives to clear.  And the dance of life, as well as the English Country Dance, to resume.

But to have a live dance, at this point, might simply be a way to endanger one another.  I want you all to be safe, and return to the dance floor healthy and strong.  Here’s your task: wear your mask. And walk with a song in your heart (or at least rattling around in the back of your brain). Smile underneath the mask — it’ll improve your outlook, and your posture as well.  And I’ll hope to see you back on the dance floor.  Hopefully in a brighter and clearer future.

English Country Dance was the world's longest-running dance craze.  They were immensely popular from 1630 to 1830, as seen in Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility (the Jane Austen novels, and the movies based on them).  All are invited – no partner or previous experience needed.  There is no lesson, and figures are taught as needed.  Easier dancesat the beginning of the evening lead up to more elegant and graceful dances by the end of the evening.

Generally 3rd Friday or Saturday of the month. We usually take a break during the Summer,

7:30 - 10:30 p.m. — Adults $10, Teens/Students, $6, Family rate, $25.
