Our Causes

Our mission began in 1912, when we became the first group of Catholic Sisters in the United States founded for overseas mission. Today we have approximately 309 Sisters serving in 18 places around the world.

Fighting PovertyOver one-third of the world lives in poverty. Every tenth person in the world lives in extreme poverty or on the equivalent of less than $1.90 a day.

Women's AdvocacyVictims can find shelter, medical care, counseling and legal assistance at the Crisis Center, where Sister Helene also encourages and empowers victims to begin new lives.

Ending Human TraffickingThe Maryknoll Sisters have long been working to eliminate human trafficking and all other forms of discrimination and violence.

Educating the PoorFor over 100 years, the Maryknoll Sisters have been providing education to those in need throughout the world.

Sister Suzanne (Sue) Rech

Current Ministry Location: Tanzania

Sister Sue entered the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation on October 18th, 1962. Her first overseas mission assignment was in 1971 to Mwanza, Tanzania, where she was engaged in youth and women's rural education. She also served on the pastoral teams in Shinyanga and Sayu Sayu and became involved in community development. Later she moved to Arusha, Tanzania, where she served as part of a pastoral team at the Kinjunji Catholic Mission until 1982. Today Sister Sue works in Tanzania helping women start small businesses in order to make a living for their families.

Sister Helene O’Sullivan

Current Ministry Location: Cambodia

Sister Helene entered the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation on September 2nd, 1962. Her first overseas mission assignment was in 1967 to Hong Kong where she first studied the Cantonese language at Hong Kong University. After language study, Sister Helene began teaching secondary high school and college students at the Maryknoll Sisters School (MSS). She also led the teachers training program and did pastoral work with those in need. Today Sister Helene is in Cambodia where she works with victims of human trafficking. She runs the Cambodian Women's Crisis Center and founded the Horizons Vocational Training Institute.
