What causes the
digital world's massive
energy consumption?

Data represents the key vector. Data is required to read newsletters, send emails, watch videos, conduct research and shop online.

Digital data is not invisible but is materialised by the following three sources of impact:

USER DEVICES

In 2019, there were around 34 billion digital devices in use around the world, manufactured and connected by millions of kilometres of cables, which all require a supply of electricity.

NETWORKS

Fixed, WAN and mobile networks connect user devices to each other and to data centres. This translates to 1.1 billion DSL / fibre routers, 10 million GSM relays (2G to 5G) and about 200 million other active WAN (extended network outside of buildings) and LAN (local network inside the buildings) equipment.1

DATA CENTRES

A few thousand data centres host around 67 million hosted servers, with accompanying computer equipment.1

Data should be treated as a resource.
