Ensemble Music

There are plenty of solo musical artists around. However, it is also common for multiple musicians to form a group. When they produce concerted sounds in two or more parts it is known as ensemble music. This incorporates a large spectrum of different popular genres.

Rock Ensembles

During the latter half of the 20th-century rock music began to take over the charts. This led to an increase in people who wanted to become part of a rock ensemble. However, starting a band is not as easy as it may seem. The best groups of this type contain skilled individuals who each contribute something unique. When put together they become something much greater than solo artists.

Classical Ensembles

For centuries ensemble musicians have wowed audiences by playing classical music. The emphasis is usually on the precision of notes and timing. A conductor is utilized to ensure that each part of the ensemble hits its mark and does not sound flat. It is relatively rare for groups in this genre to play original compositions. The exception is when ensembles are formed to record movie soundtracks.

Stage Musicals

Traditionally when a stage show is performed a group of musicians accompany the singer. They tend to be seated in an area below the stage so that they do not distract the audience. There is a fair amount of crossover between classical and stage ensembles. A musician may be hired to work for both types.
